Hey folks-

I'm finding myself short a full-time crew this year, so I decided to come on here and see if anybody here knew of anybody that would be interested.  This year, I'm doing something I've never done before, and that's offer a minimum wage for someone who comes on and stays through the season. I'll give it a shot and see if it attracts the right kind of folks, I guess.  There is still opportunity to earn much more, but there is no risk of going home empty handed if someone sticks out the season. 

What I'm needing is someone who:

-is at least 18 years old (insurance requirement).

-can be in Sitka and ready to work from June 15-Sept 12.

-can stick to their commitment to work that timeframe (quitting mid-season is not an option).

-can stay motivated to do the best job they can for the boat no matter the weather conditions, fishing success, etc.

-can cook the basics and will happily take their share of the galley chores.

-will enjoy being in the remote wilderness of Southeast Alaska for most of the summer.  That means soaking in the beauty and experiences, but understand while out fishing there is very little cell coverage to share those experiences with your friends.  We could be up to 15 days out of cell coverage.

-has driver's license and decent driving record.

-has a clean bill of health.  Non-smokers preferred, but respectful smokers are good.  No drugs, including recreational MJ.  It's still not kosher with the Feds, and I live under the thumb of the Coast Guard.

-is willing to learn, work, and basically do any reasonable thing needed as a critical part of a 2 and sometimes 3 person team on a fishing vessel.

-has some ocean experience and believes they don't get crippled with seasickness.  I can still get seasick sometimes, but I just have to push through it (it goes away after the first week or so, in my experience).

We will be longlining for a small amount of halibut first, then we will be trolling for FAS salmon for the rest of the summer.  In the middle of that, we could hit the chum patch for a week or so, fill a contract for FAS pink salmon I've been negotiating, or focus on dinglebar lingcod for a week if the season is still open during the coho break mid-August. 


What I'm offering this year, for the first time ever, is a minimum contract earnings of $4k a month for someone who sticks it out through the whole season.  This includes all food on the boat, and a place to sleep every night (your bunk on the boat).  The only basic expenses a crew would have if they really wanted to save money is their boots, gear and gloves.  I supply all heavy boots and gear required for the freezer work.  Based on fish prices so far this year I expect someone who earns their way up the crewshare percentage ladder quickly will make significantly more than the $12K guaranteed for sticking out the contract. 

I personally believe there is a lot of value in challenging oneself in an endeavor like this.  Nobody that I've ever talked to that did this for a season ever regretted it, even if they didn't make any money, and I'm eliminating the "but I didn't make anything" part with the minimum pay for showing up and dedicating yourself to the mission.

haha. I was reading to ad and thinking the same thing. Would be a fun summer. Good luck finding the right person skillet! The youth these days are beyond lazy and when things get tough they throw in the towel. It’s pretty sad.

l understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's all that bad.  It is pretty impressive what some young'uns can do when they don't have a choice to not do it.  It's a long swim to shore!

That's what I was thinking. Hard to quit when you are on a boat out of cell coverage.
