Where to find wild hogs in WA
« on: October 17, 2011, 08:01:28 PM »
Hay ya'll. Where should I start looking for feral pigs in WA?  Heard about some around Quinault area. Is there any other notable areas?  I would love to get one with my 500 S/W. You probably have noticed my new status.  Please be gentle, I have seen some of the hazing. Albeit potentially deserved.

there aren't any feral hogs in WA...there have been rumors of them down by quinault and some up by sedro wooley but they are just rumors. there may have been a few to start the rumors but they would have been killed off along time ago...best bet for hogs would be to go to texas...if you wanna play with your .500 I'd like to see what one would do to a yote :chuckle:

I can confirm the hogs south of Quinault, but not anytime recently.  Most were shot by Fish and Wildlife along US101 and I have not heard of any since that time and I am up that direction weekly.  There were rumors of them running around Fern Lane up the Wynoochee Valley Rd around Mile Post 8.  That rumor went viral after the local businessman who started the rumor posted pics of hogs he claimed he shot in that area.  I know this was BS as the hogs he and his friends shot came from out of state, but it generated a ton of business for him while his sporting goods store was still open.  So, I can say with a fair amount of certainty, hogs are now just a myth in WA.  Head to Cali if you wanna pay over $1000 to hunt them through a guide or Texas if you wanna pay just a few hundred. :twocents:

I had a few great conversations with people who say that hogs are out of control.

BUT

If they were out of control why would you need to pay anyone to kill one?  I think it is a scam for the land owner to get funds from the govenment and from the hunter.  I do not believe there is a real issue if you have to pay.

Some countys in TX had bountys on hogs, like WA had long ago  :bash: bring in the ears and get paid. A buddy of mine and I went down there when I was stationed in SC and killed enough to cover our gas bill one way, and the farmer was so happy he paid to have one processed for us. Just depends on where you are and who you know, but there are deffently some who want money from this..

I head down to Texas to hunt hogs every year and have had the same discussions with land owners that it sounds like you had TheHunt. I was talking with one rancher who was telling me how out of controll the hogs were on his property and said great when should I head over. He said anytime its $50 per hog. I said even better i can make a bit of cash to help pay for my trip down here. He quickly informed me that he was not going to pay me $50 per hog but that I had to pay him $50 per hog. I let him know he clearly didn't have a hog problem if he was profiting off it. He then, in substantially more colorful language than I will share on HuntWa, told me to go home and not ask him to hunt again. Let him know when the hogs become a real problem I will gladly give him a good deal and kill them for free instead of charge him for them. Needless to say I don't have permission to hunt his ranch, but have free access to a few others that produce every year.

Hogs are out of control in TX and cause an estimated $52 million a year in damage. Some ranchers are charging for people to hunt them to gain back some of the losses in crop damage. This is kind of like people paying to see wolves here - it just aint gonna pay the bills for the damage.

Sirmissalot, Want to elaborate on the hog. Thats the first time anyone has actually posted a photo of a "washington" feral hog. To me thats about like seeing bigfoot. Would love to know more information, like when it was shot, were you targeting hogs or derr/elk hunting and came accross it, were there others with it, ect.......
