Two Bull Moose
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:36:50 AM »
My son and I were fortunate to each draw an any moose tag in the hangman A unit. We applied for a group hunt. I had 13 points and my son had 3. We approached the mica peak unit off of Weller road on the Idaho side and walked into the IEP property into Washington. I got mine on Oct 4th and he got his on a return trip on Oct 20th. We now have three freezers full.

Actually I used a Lewis chain saw winch to pull out the moose. It did a great job of pulling the moose out of a hole without using a snatch block. The only problem is it’s a little heavy. The winch with the chain saw must weigh at least 35 pounds. If you have to pack it in some distance it’s a pain but it does the job. The Simpson capstan winch shown in the photo was not used on the moose hunts. It was purchased the day before elk season buy my cousin. He had never started it up before and used it on the opening day to pull out a 4 point bull out of a canyon. Since the engine was a Honda 4 stroke, it was very quiet. The Simpson winch work flawlessly. It used very little fuel. It’s rated at 2500 pounds straight pull and weighs only 16 pounds. The Lewis winch is rated at 4000 pounds straight pull.  Since observing the Simpson winch in use, it will be my next hunting purchase.  The capstan winch can use any length of rope and the pulling capacity does not change as the rope does not pile up on itself.
Yes, we were able to get both moose out whole. I was able to get permission from IEP security to use my ATV to drive on a ditched out road. After we got the moose pulled onto the old road, I was able to pull the moose on a metal sled to my truck that was a little more than a mile away. It’s nice to get an animal out whole. The meat stays a lot cleaner.

Great job on the Moose! I have a simpson winch too.  It has a Tecumseh motor on it...add the 600 feet of rope and never pack an animal again!...It is a slow and steady process but fairly easy.  Glad to see you had success!
