.223 round?
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:05:45 PM »
I'm looking for a .223 hunting round for yotes and figured I would see what others on here liked. What type do you use and how well do you like it? Thanks

Barnes grenade, noslers, lots of good options...i think combined technologies makes a pretty slick slug. One thing to consider....i guess two...what does your gun like and are you trying to save the pelt.

I like 50+ grains. I have had to many runner with anything lighter. A lot of my ar-15's like the 52g hpbt serria. Pretty much anything with a boattail and on the + side of 50 grains works well for me.

55-60 grain soft points do a pretty good job.  Anything but FMJ should do the trick.

Thanks everyone for all your help! I'll have to pick up a few different boxes and see what my AR likes. I'm looking at a scope, but can't decide between a 3x9 or 4x16. What x-zoom do you use?

:) Hornady soft point 55 grain, 40 rounds to box.  Leupold 3.5X10X40 VXIII. Almost all shots on 4X.

If you are looking for some good shooting store bought ammo I would try some Hornady Superformance loaded with 53Vmax.

I've been shooting these in my .223 while I'm waiting for my dies to get here and in my gun this stuff shot a .112 3shot group.  I've shot 2 yotes with them and they DRT.  This is the best shooting factory ammo I have ever used.

The Hornady 55gr V-max rounds should turn Wiley into a sock-puppet. As far as optics go, I use the Sightmark Triple Duty 4-16x44 with an illuminated red/green mil-dot reticle. It's not an $800 Leupold but from the reviews that I have seen, it's more than adequate for my use. With a $179 tag from OpticsPlanet.com I had it in a few days.

I think the standard 3X9 will suffice for the .223 at effective hunting ranges.
