cabelas tulalip Gun library
« on: May 31, 2012, 03:02:44 PM »

I had a shotgun that I was kind of on the fence about getting rid of, so just out of curiosity I brought it to the tulalip cabelas to see if I could get a good price toward a trade- if I couldn't then no sweat, since I like the gun anyway.

off the bat I was greeted by cabela's usual friendly customer service, and had a gentleman evaluate my gun. he deemed it 95% which I agreed with since it only had a few very cosmetic flaws. he offered me a price of $860.00 which was a little bit less than I was hoping for but I said I would happily accept that and use all the money plus $300 of my own towards purchasing another gun they had there.

at that point the head honcho of the gun dept comes in and snatches up the gun and picks it apart. his tone was very terse and he was on the brink of shouting right from the get go. he pointed out several places "where I had tried to cover up scratches on the stock" and the "butt pad was not original"  and said the gun was no longer 95% but at 75% and he could only give around $500 for it, because at 100% the gun would only be worth maybe $1000.

I remained cool and asked why he says a new gun is only worth $1000 to him when other stores are selling the very same gun in lesser condition for around $1500?
he said "you obviously know nothing about how this works" while raising his voice.

I very calmly told him I didn't appreciate being talked down too or being shouted at.

he said "I am tired, I have been dealing with people who think their guns are worth more than they really are for the last few weeks"

I replied very calmly "perhaps you should stay home and get some rest before abusing paying customers"

"I wasn't being abusive" he said with a snotty tone, and raised voice again

I told him that I felt he was abusive or at the very least mistreating customers with his poor attitude and derisive comments.

and then I told him the gun was off the table and I was no longer interested in selling it.

for my own satisfaction, I asked him to look up that model gun in the cabelas library so he could see that other cabelas locations were in fact selling the gun at upwards of $1500.
after several excuses and pretending not to see what was right in front of him on the monitor, he stuck with his conclusion that all the other stores had payed way too much for this type of gun and they had all been sitting on the shelves for awhile (mind you the gun I was selling was a duck gun.. and this IS duck country)... I decided enough was enough and left.
on the way out the fellow who helped me originally apologized for his co workers attitude and said there have been several complaints already about his demeanor and poor customer service.

now I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of cabelas policies and their gun library. and it really was no big deal to me that I couldn't sell them my gun.

but for damn sure I know it isn't right to yell at customers or talk down to them under any circumstances, especially without provocation.

in the past I have always dealt with the lacey gun library, and have always been treated as a customer should, and have always wound up with a fair deal. you might want to save yourself some trouble and use lacey too.

What gun library?

I've been in there twice now and don't know what you are talking about? I mean....there is a small closet like room with a few expensive guns and some pretty fancy looking wood but I never found a gun library. So far I've been in twice. Completely ignored by staff and wandered around until I found what I needed. On one visit I asked where something was and got a "over there" pointing. Basically it is a Cabelas wharehouse. Get in, find your stuff, get out.

I am betting he doesn't last long if he is that much of a tool, Cabela's is all about their customer service.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Something tells me somebody's in for a promotion or they're going to be advertising for a position.  NO excuse for that kind of attitude, that's the job you selected now deal with it in a professionalism manner.

its a remington SP-10 just like this one. granted mine isn't in as good a shape but some finish scratches aren't enough to knock $500 bucks off the value.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Remington-SP-10-10ga-Magnum/1383678.uts?Ntk=GunLibrary&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DGunLibrary%26Ntt%3D10%2Bgauge%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-Gun%2BLibrary&Ntt=10+gauge

that is one of the least expensive SP-10 they are selling. I  believe the prices are jumping because the SP-10 is no longer being made.

here is one in the high range

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Remington-Model-SP-10-Camo-10-Ga/1183492.uts?Ntk=GunLibrary&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DGunLibrary%26Ntt%3D10%2Bgauge%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-Gun%2BLibrary&Ntt=10+gauge

the funniest part was when I finally twisted his arm to look at these links, he was just full of excuses and said they were all marked too high to begin with.

That guy won't last long.  But if you are looking to get the most for your gun sell it privately, Cabelas is only looking out for themselves, I have sold one gun to them and I got hosed badly but I had to sell it in a hurry.  You should have gone to the store manager about Mr. Wonderful.

If an *censored* treated me like this, I don't care if they offered me twice what the gun was worth.  I'd take my business elsewhere as I've done on occasions in the past.  I treat others professionally at work and I expect the same when I'm spending money at a business.

That sucks. If someone came up and had an attitude like that for no reason and was raising his voice, it would take a lot of self control for me. Haven't had experience in buying guns from cabelas, but this definitely steers me away from them to the smaller shops where they know what customer service is. Hopefully they make this right, and this guy finds his way into a non-customer service related field.

Clarence is sending this on to those above,

But remember Cabelas is the middle man they have to pay you less then retail to be able to sell it at retail. I always watch pawn stars and wander why people get made when they will not pay them top dollar. The OP understands this concept and was willing to sell it for less then retail to move it so he could purchase something he wanted.

If that position is giving him heart burn, he needs to move to selling guns vs. buying them.  I was in there yesterday looking at guns.  The used guns seem to be very high priced.  They have a beat SP-10 on the rack, that is going to sit for some time.

On a side note:  I would have sold mine for $860.  On the various duck huning forums they are selling from $650 to about $850 for the SP-10.  I purchased mine for $700 as the guy said he had only shot 6 shells through it on one guided hunt he did.  It was a safe queen with not a mark on it.  He also gave me 4 boxes of shells.  Great gun.  I picked up several cases of shells for it last season as well.  The Hevi-Metal 10 gauges shells put a smack on the snows.

Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

He didn't say the guy was getting fired, he said he was getting it looked into. I'm sure cabelas would rather have a guy on here whispering into their ear than to not know someone drove away 10 customers. Especially when you look at the cost of a new customer vs the savings in keeping one.

as a matter of fact I contacted cabela's corporate headquarters and "bitched " to them.

like this forum, cabela's is a public establishment; and I figured that other members would want to hear about my experience and maybe save themselves some heartburn or at least be prepared for a situation similar to the one I described.

as for the "other side of the story" you are alluding to- I have absolutely nothing to gain from lying about  or inflating the situation that occurred. at best I might like a third evaluation of the gun I was offering for sale, but thats trivial since in my original post, I said I would accept less than I wanted for the gun in order make a trade where I would have to come up with an extra $300.

I am aware of Jeepasaurusrex's reasons for getting involved, and quite frankly I appreciate it.

Not to steal the thread, but I had similar issues with customer service. I purchased a rifle, scope and rings... Nothing overly expensive but $700.00 of my money and asked that the scope be mounted and bore sited initially awesome service than a 2 hour wait at the gun counter for an FFL check with a military ID and than another 3 hour wait to get the scope mounted and all the while I was told I had to wait because it required my attention when they "got to it."  Than to top it off they mounted the wrong scope, the fix only took a few minutes on that one though I think it was because it was close to closing time. Not impressed at all, I think the Lacey store as well as the Post Fall's store will get all my business until Corporate does something about this one.

Well that's good to hear.  Maybe the guy just doesn't belong in retail...

On a brighter note, I bought some footwear in there yesterday, and had great customer service.  Friendly & knowledgeable.  Most of the departments seem that way to me.

Not that it excuses the guy's behavior in any way if he acted like you describe, but when a company opens a new store and fills it with all new employees there is going to be a period of shaking out while the real personalities and aptitudes come to the surface.  6 months from now I bet things run a lot smoother.  The good news is that they, management, seem to be interested in the opinions of their customers and also seem to be responsive.  I worked for the Nordstrom company in the 80's when they were opening a lot of new stores.  Even then, with all management being hired from within the company, there were a lot of surprises and "getting aquainted" challenges at the new stores.  Eventually everything flows together and things work like a machine if the top management is on the ball.

I bought a fishfinder at Cabelas in Tulalip last night.  A gal helped me and she tried really hard.  She didn't know all the answers but worked to figure out what I needed to know.  A few months from now she'll be better too.  At least she was trying hard to get me what I needed.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

They had a rep post on the site not too long ago. They seem to be paying attention which is a good thing.

I used to shop at Cabelas and was a regular customer for years.  There CS policies must have changed, I bought VHF for the boat brought it into Lacey with sales slip.  CS rep said it was beyond beyond return period ( within a couple of weeks).  I explained I only wanted to exchange for the same and not get something different... It was a no go, SOL.  I went to the department and spoke with the associate asked if they had many returned and explained my issue.  He said, buy a new one and put the old one in the box and return it.  but I went internet purchased and now use Cabelas only when I have little choice.

Gotta love it when an employee tells you how to rip off the system instead of just taking care of the customer.
