I want to build a deer and elk feeder
« on: June 01, 2012, 09:38:51 PM »
I want to build a feeder, but i was wandering if i should use lumber or just build it out of alders to keep things natural looking. This is on my own property. Need ideas and tips befor i start.  Pics of yours that have worked will be good too. Gonna be feedeing alfalfa and cob and such so i will want to keep it dry so it wont mold if they dont eat it all. i put food out before uncovered and it molded fast, well they dont call it the wet side for nothing! thanks :hello:

Here's one I built that may fill your bill.  It's 6' of 4" PVC haywired to tree.  The bottom rests on the ground and has a 45 on it that the deer scoop out as much as they want.  It leaves a pile about 4"x4" at the bottom when there are done, and the rest stays dry.  The top cap is a rubber plumbing test cap.  The deer were good with it; the bears just tore it off the tree.  It holds in the neighborhood of 40-45# of corn.  My next one will be 8' long to hold a full 50# bag.

The feeder is just to the right of the deer standing vertical.  (The horizontal black thing close to the bottom is a log and not part of the feeder.)

Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

if you use the black corrugated flexible pipe, then an 8 foot piece and two caps will make 2 feeders for about 10$.. and if the bears destroy them you are out 10$..it what I do for hogs down south, and they are hard on feeders, just bend the lower end of the feeder into a J, and use wire to tie around it to keep it that way, make a few knife slits in the bottom of the j, helps drain any rain out of it, an helps the pipe bend.. wire it to a tree, pour in corn, and you are good..

Been there, done that, doesn't hold enough feed (unless it's in your back yard) plus pain in the ars to fill  ;)

In Texas we would take a 5 gal pail and cut a hole about an inch bigger that a broom handle. Hammer 3 small nails partway into a broom handle. Put the handle through the hole and fill with COB or your choice of feed (may need to adjust hole size)Hang the bucket from a tree so the handle is about 3 ft off the ground.Sprinkle some on the ground right under the handle to get em coming in. You would be amazed how quickly they figure out to whack that broom handle to get more to come out.  :twocents:

some of these feeders are no different than just dumping the feed on the ground so I dont really understand all the effort in building and packing it in for it basically be a free for all. To me a feeder is to put out a desired amount  daily and keep the rest away from critters to help save on cost and abundant trips to the hills. If it were me i would buy a feed motor and mount it to a container..be done for less than $40

I perfer to not dump 350 lbs of feed on the ground! My dog feeder style worked really good except it was to far from home to keep filled. now I have a wild game feeder that speads on a timer.

I think i do a few bendy black pipe, and something else to hold and keep alfalfa dry. I saw a few deer tonight in the field that looked liked they wanted a feeder! :chuckle: YUM YUM!!!

Just got done with 2 pvc feeders. Gonna put corn in them, do they like whole or cracked better? Or get the "deer feed" from the feed store?

looks decent, I like the adjustable legs so you could hang this feeder off pretty much anything

for the woods though I really like the bucket/broom handle idea.   One picture I seen a guy used a toilet plunger with the plumger down - not sure that was needed but kind of cool, gives the deer a bigger target to wack I guess.

I'd like to figure out something a bear wouldn't just pull down though - hence the feeder motor above.  Tie that bucket out of reach of bears, would make your feed go a whole lot further.  Prolly pay for the motor in saved feed, and lengthen your refill times.

I was thinking the same thing. More so to avoid other hunters. the feed is going to fall to the ground even if the feeder is hoisted up onto a tree out of sight. but on a pulley of some kind that it could be lowered for re-fills. Im still brain storming the full proof plan
