Waterfowl Contest 2008-09! Committee Members Needed
« on: August 11, 2008, 11:20:54 AM »
Hey everyone!  I've been given the OK by Ray to start a committee to do some research concerning a waterfowl competition.  I need TWO people who are willing to help brainstorm and come up with ideas.  Please PM your qualifications, stats, and anything else you might think is relavent.  I'll be choosing two people in the next couple days to help me come up with an idea to present to Ray.

I got the impression he was going to have some sort of point system on the type and number of birds taken, and in a specific time frame ( e.g. 1 or 2 weeks).

The committee will help decide how it will work.  But yes, my general idea will be based around a point system of duck type, amount, and all that.  So, if you are interested, I need two individuals who would be willing to help me set this up.

How is it going to work?  I mean some guys hunt private some public.  Westside/Eastside?  Some have a group they hunt with.  Out of state/in state.  Im not accusing anyone of being cheaters but this seems like it would be kind of hard to do.  I am all for it if we can get it right!

The spirit of the message here is that he wants to form a group to get a consensus on what the rules will be. It's a little early to say how it will work but I am sure he is interested in some input.

I live for waterfowl...  but i'd come in last place in any contest. I don't live near any good flyway's...   so me and Tank head down to the Columbia every chance we get....   come home with a few diver's, once in a while a Hoodie, and a Greenhead. If we get 3-4, we've had a good day. I ain't complaining though, ya just have to live with what ya got, and nothing I'd rather do than spend the day with Tank, bird's or no bird's.   :brew:

Yes, input is definetely important!  I've actually already considered some of what people have already put here, and I am definetely excited as to the potential of what I have in mind.  Put keep any questions or advice or comments coming.  I'll keep working.

****PS I still need one more committee member!

We used to have some pretty hardcore waterfowlers on here, but they got kind of in a tiff I think.  Not sure whose left.

with whatever comittee you come up with you should have a duck call competition. would be good for a get together as well. judge on feeding chatter, comeback call, you know all the general calls.

If someone else would want to set that up in a completely different thread, that would be fine.  With everyone spread all over the state, and pretty much every weekend for me is going to be spent in the field, I probably won't compete unless it's in vancouver.  Good idea, but tough to accomplish.

My idea...  worth .02 or less :P
Everyone is invited to participate.  Doesnt matter where you live.
The contest runs for 6 weeks with 6 days of entries.
You can enter any days hunt but you must enter it within 2 days of the hunt.  i.e. a saturday needs to be entered on a monday.  Just so you can't pick your six entries at the end of 6 weeks.  an honor system which may be a  :bdid: but who knows...
How the scoring would be set up is under revision but my general idea..
+1 for any duck
+7 points for a limit of ducks.
+2 if its all drakes
+1 for a drake pintail
+3 for a Eurasian Widgeon Drake
+1 for 7 greenheads
+3 for 7 drakes of same species other than mallards
+3 for a BWT or Cin. Teal
+3 for limit of bluebills

-1 for spoonies
-1 for hen pintail

I am up for many/any additions to this as i am tired and sure i am leaving out obvious stuff...

Yeah a coyote contest would be a lot of fun.  I'll work on something in a seperate thread.  I like the idea of the admin versus the forum.  We would probably get wiped out, but it would be fun.  Of course we are going to award 100 points for shooting a coyote with traditional archery equipment versus 5 points for a rifle kill.  You guys have my brain going now.  I think I'll have something in the next couple of weeks.   :whoo:

Right now Coastaljay is setting up some sort of spreadsheet with his own rankings of birds and point values.  I'm also considering including geese.

Seriously??  You need to get out more, they are rare but not that rare, the oregon boys stumble on those every so often and there are always some killed up here in WA, and as far as American Widgeon go I could have had countless day with a limit of them last year!

Last year i spotted eurasian widgeon countless times in a pond late in the season by the vancouver mutual brick yard. SpencerUSMC is right also on the American widgeon! last year we would be hunting and out of no where there would be 25 to 30 widgeon booming into our spread and they were easy pickin too.

I dont know about you guys but the Euro Widgeon very very rare...I am out quite a bit and have never seen one...But then again I hunt farm fields and not around the bays where most of the widgeons seem to be concentrated....Also on the list it says +1 for any duck then -1 for spoonies...How would this come out..Just wondering???

Well he is not affiliated with the committee, so those will NOT be the point values assigned.  So just wait until official point values are released.  Basic overall rules have been released in the other thread.
