Goose hunting with vice grips

So, this is kinda a weird one, and just was thinking about things the other night and was thinking about my grandfather and some of the story's he would tell, he passed 10 years ago so, can't really ask him anymore, but anyway, he once told me a story about goose hunting out in eastern wa back in the day and I was wondering if anybody else has ever heard of something similar or if it was just a good story....

The story goes something along the lines of back in the day when they'd go goose hunting, they'd dig a goose pit big enough for a few guys to hide in and they'd cover it with chicken wire and hide inside, except the chicken wire was covered in corn stalks/foliage for good camo and they'd leave corn on the stalks as bait and when the geese would land and walk out onto the coverings, they would reach up between the mesh with a pair of vice grips and grab the foot of the goose. Considering the mesh size wouldn't allow the pliers to pass through, the goose would be screwed and they'd crawl out, wring its neck and start the process all over again and that's how they'd goose hunt. Now, I never asked about what year that was so it very well could have been during the depression and he very well may not have had any shotgun shells and had to get creative, or it coulda been a one time deal or maybe a bet he made with his buddies in the blind after having a few beers, but either way grandpa used to claim that back in the day he'd goose hunt with pliers. That must have been one helluva thrill lol

I grabbed a cackler once as it hovered a few inches above my pit in a sandbar. Pliers story could prolly happen but sounds more like a 'could have' story

One time in the September season we had a fairly large group work our spread. We managed to shoot all but one of the flock. The one that was left made a wide pass and decoyed back into the spread. He landed on my layout blind. I was really hoping the guide wouldn't call the shot as it would have been really bad for me. As it was the goose walked off the blind and into the decoys. He was immediately dispatched by one of our 1st year hunters. So, I think your grampas story could be legit.
