Bank fishing for steelhead in that area is difficult, at best. You would be better served to keep heading up river to the mouth of the Grande Ronde. The first two miles is "gear only", but I've slayed them with spinners in there; much to the chagrin of the flyfishing snobs. Also, if you head out from Anatone and drop down to the GR, there's good fishing; not down Rattlesnake, but before that (I forget the road, but I could get you there). September to mid-October is primo.

I was in a boat...and still flunked miserably...but it was our rookie trip.
and not all flyfishermen are snobs ;)

Thanks for the tips...I do have a boat but would rather plunk around for the kittys and leave the steelhead for the experts...I agree not all flyfishermen are snobs but a good many of them are! A hack like me cant stick his nose in the air or I might get a hook in it!

There is spawning bed up there, that I remember; below it would probably be pretty good. We tried to toss below the area, but the river is too wide at that point to get a lure over there...on a boat it would be nice.
Not all FFmen are bad...it was fun watching them stew when I would pull in 3 or 4 fish an hour! :rockin:

apparently the key is to fish the original river channel, which you have to locate using a depth finder. it's there....somewhere.
