Title: First coyote with 6.5 creedmoor
Post by: snowshoes22 on June 23, 2012, 07:17:34 AM
I only fawn bleated 3 times and this coyote was 70 yards in front of me.  He knew something was up so i woofed and he stopped broadside.  I held just behind the shoulder and squeezed.  He took of running like he wasn't touched.  I looked for blood for 50 yards before i found anything. I found him 50 yards later. At first i was kicking myself because I thought i had missed. If i was using a V-Max or something i think it would have planted him, but I am using a 140 Berger VLD to get used to it for deer hunting.

Nice kill.  Probably not enough body mass to make that bullet expand much.  I'm not a big fan of Berger bullets anyway.  Saw a guy testing loads in a 6mm a while back, and his worst groups were with Bergers.  :sry:

The Berger's are designed to penetrate then expand. I agree with doggy. Probably not enough depth to get the full use of the bullet and its design. I don't care for them myself but they will kill.

Congrats

The gun looks like a Savage, for sure.  Saw a friend today who has a Savage 6.5 Creedmoore.  He says it's a tack-driver.

The gun is a Savage model 12 LRP topped with a Vortex Viper PST 4-16X.  its held together with burris tactical rings and a warne tactical 20 MOA base.  This thing is scary accurate.  I need to get a Leica 1600 to go with it.  I have a 750 yard range on the family farm and cold bore hits are getting too easy.  We are putting up more steel tomorrow to extend it to 1000.  Way to much fun!

1000 yards, yep it should do it or take Creedmoor off the name, just hope the Irish team doesn't show up.

snowshoes,
next time i have a small game/ predator shoot you ought to some and put that gun and your skills up against some shooters from the area with the same interests. i like the set up i shoot a 6-24 pst moa and love it, makes for quick corrections. nice coyote also.

i was just checking out your posts and website for your shoots.  it looks like a lot of fun.  can you use rangefinders or do you have to use your optics for range estimation?  i'm thinking about attending the september shoot.

What you experienced with not being sure if they were hit and having to go recover them is why I stopped shooting coyotes behind the shoulder.  Put it on and through the shoulders and they are much easier to find  :chuckle:

much easier to find usually harder to sell if a guy is interested in that during the good months.   i completely agree with dropping them with a shoulder shot like you say though

I use a 17 Remington as my primary varmint gun with a 25 grain hornady HP.  With the 17 if you hit anywhere in front of the diaphram they hit the dirt fast.  I have never had one run off with a chest shot.  With it you can hardly find a entrance wound and never an exit.  I took the 6.5 just because it is new.

Going to have to disagree with you here.  I shoot a .223 and usually 55gr JHP.  I will get pass throughs behind the shoulder but on the shoulder I don't have an exit.  I haven't sold hides for a few years now but I find shoulder shots to be more fur friendly.  My issue is often by habit it automatically want to hold behind the shoulder.  Now that hides aren't worth much, the real benefit is the easy recovery.  :twocents:

maybe i shoot too much gun, but when i shoot them with a shoulder shot from my 243 ai with 70 grain b tip at 3650 i blow rite through and do them in pretty good. some times i may get one better than the other. i am building a 22-250 ai for my coyote partner with a 1:12 twist looking at the 53 grain v max's at a high rate of speed. the one i am building for my self will out do the 243 ai ballistic wise with 75 grain or 80 grain bullets. i would like to take a few coyotes past my personal best from this past winter at 725yards.
