Title: Hornhoarder's bounty fishing log
Post by: HornHoarder on June 23, 2012, 07:47:06 AM
I just returned from 10 days straight of fishing for pikeminnow, in the Tri cities. Just home for the weekend cleaning up and taking a short break. Trying to put 100% effort into it, and see if I can make some money. Sleeping on the river bank, poisen ivy, sunburn, and 18 hour days sure wear you out. I've done O.K. I think I'm at 65 fish, including one worth $500. :IBCOOL: I'll share some pictures I've taken and keep updating this when I'm at home.

Nice Job!  Are you doing this all summer?  Sounds like your pretty dedicated if your fishing 18 hours per day.  Hope the fish gods treat you well and fish on!

I'm impressed.  Got a check for something like 12 bucks for one squaw down below Bonnevile years ago using a coupon.

Good deal, I know a few guys that do it. I know one guy what was fishing with 2 other buddies and they caught over 50 in one day and 3 were tagged :yike:

Talk about a score. Glad to see you getting some fish. Some good eaters to!

Boy I wish they would have had this payment plan for sqawfish when I was in highschool in the 80's.  I could have turned in bucket loads.

Nice Job!  Are you doing this all summer?

Yeah, at least two more months of solid fishing, This my my second summer at it, and yes it is a very difficult fishery to figure out. I've set a goal to at least break the 400 mark, and then I'll be into the $8 fish. Thanks for the support

Good job taking care of those things! They devastate our more valuable fish. Too bad we cant get a bounty in the area we fish for them! My brother and our best Friend went out today and managed 43 and lot/missed a lot more. We thin them out and supply crab bait for a few people every year.

Not sure they want their faces and location posted so it has been modified.....

That's what I did, but on days when you only catch a couple fish, and only make $12 sucks. They are worth $4 for your first 100 fish. $5 for 101- 400 fish, then worth $8 over 400 fish.

Just curious what you are using for bait.  I use to do it a lot and may have some ideas for you.  Pm me if you want and I'll give you an idea or two if you'd like.

Just post it on here.  Hopefully, you will help more of those things get caught and bonked!

Well I had some ups and downs on my last week of fishing.  The high points were 19 and 23 fish days, I'm past 100 fish now, so I got a my first raise. Some low points were having my camp flooded, and having a brand new Shimano Claris rod/reel get pull overboard, presumably by a big catfish. A couple pics from last week.

Here's one more picture of a small fish I snagged, I need some help identifying it. I was thinking baby shad, but not sure.

That's a nice catfish   I have a cousin that started doing that a couple years ago and he makes a pretty decent living, to bad we can't have the bounty here in Yakima, those things are a dime a dozen

Did you get your rod and reel back? Ouch if you didn't that hurts the profit margins :yike:

I just spent 11 days on the river. Very successful trip. Caught another tagged fish, now getting consistant 20+ fish days, and making some money. On the Snake river now, and it has been HOT 106 degrees the other day, and about 7 days in a row over 100 degrees. I caught a nice walleye, the first of the trip. Starting to feel like I know what I'm doing, and anticipate numbers to keep increasing.

Seems like I always like to show the downside too... which included several cracks in the bow of the boat from tossing the anchor over and the current swinging it up. Leaking pretty good, but I can repair that tomarrow.

I replaced that Shimano I lost, only to break it in half yesterday. Wholesale Sports was happy to replace it at least.

Gas in truck and boat is taking its toll on profits.

This last trip was exceptional. My first day back the fish sure were biting good. I had a 101 fish day! Plus 47 fish day, and many 30+ days. I got my final payraise, $8 fish from here on out. The numbers and the money are adding up quick.

633 pikeminnow total to date

Some pictures from last week.

I have never seen so many thunderstorms either. Seemed like every other day. They were amazing to watch, but they cut into fishing time, and did significant road damage.

Bringing an old thread back to life, but the season for Pikeminnow opens May 1st!  Its coming around the corner.  I go to WSU and may 1st is a friday so I plan to zip down friday after class and fish  as long as I can and sleep in my car so I can fish saturday and sunday.  Since you guys were catching them I am looking for any tips.  Also, any tips for shore fishing?

Are they any good to eat or smoke?

I’ve heard they are ok but really bony.
I caught close to 600 back in the 90s.  It’s a lot of work but they pay more now.

I heard of one highliner that was making bank on the program.
He got stopped one day by a warden and turned out his favorite bait was salmon smolt that he had caught :yike: That one hurt.

I know several guys that do it chicken liver and bloody things so well for them.

I have read stories from guys doing it for the money over the years. I would be afraid it might become a 'job' and I would not enjoy it if I 'had' to do it every day to make a living. Particularly if I am 'roughing it' and sleeping in my car.
From what I have seen, it seems most people 'burn out' after a few years of chasing them. Probably different if you lived right there I suppose.
