I really want to use my .280 but can't afford a scope. Would it hurt anything to put a peep on it in the mean time? Any suggestions?
-
does it have open sights on it already? Without a front sight a peep is really not gonna work. Now a red dot, would work for close range stuff.

It has nothing. I pictured adding a peep with a front post.

If the barrel is not drilled and tapped already for the front and rear sights, you will be better off buying even a middle of the road scope, like a redfield for 200.00. Will cost you that to get the machining done for the sights....
-
You could get a low priced scope that would still be better than a peep sight. Try looking for a straight 4 power Weaver, you should be able to get one for right around $100.
-
By the time you get done having a front sight installed, purchasing and installing a reciever sight(peep sight) you could purchase a pretty decent scope. You don't need a Nightforce to get started. A nice Redfield, Weaver Classic, Mueller, Swift Premier, Burris FF, Nikon Prostaff, or Bushnell Trophy can be had for under $200 including decent rings and bases NEW.
I'm sure if if you post a wanted ad you could find a nice fixed 4x scope, rings and bases for a $100. or less.
Stay away from Barska, Ncstar, Leapers etc. if it sounds like it is has all the Bells and Whistles of a expensive scope but a realy cheap price, it is more likely to be a CHEAP scope and cost you money in the long run.
Yes Peep sights are great and can be very accurate out alot farther than most relize. Untill I had eye surgery for cataracts I had a number of rifles so equipted and were my go to rifles when the weather was nasty(you can just blow the snow off of a peep sight and not fog it up). My eyes will no longer focus close enough to see a peep sight.
PM me if you are intrested in an entry level scope

Thanks guys for the perspective. I will go with an entry-level scope. I also have a discount available on a Leupold for Hunter's Ed.

Do not forget to go see what BI MART has in stock and prices. I have found really good deals there...

It's still going to be a while yet. :chuckle: I have a little guy who needs shoot cards, arrows and animal targets all the time to stay interested. Fun times!
-
You can barrow a scope form one of your other rifles, you just need a mounts. Rr buy a Simmons for about $30 bucks at Wally world (walmart). Other wise get a Redfield or Leupold.

Good suggestion, BV. I should know to ask a rifelman first! Thanks.

I bought a 4-12 pentax for 69$ its a nice clear scope i will shoot this weekend.
-
I have a fixed 10 bushnell with rings I would be willing to lend you until you have the funds. All you would need is bases. Pm me if you would like to borrow it.
-
If your not particular about optics, I purchased a used rifle about two weeks ago that had a Buckridge 6-24x42 variable objective out front., matte black, mil-dot with a lit reticle(11 position). You can have it if you want it. I will never use it, I also have a older Tasco straight 4x with a fine cross hair, gloss blue with I believe a 40mm objective. That's free for the taking if you could use it, no reason for them to sit if they can be used.

Muledhunter and Biggerhammer, thanks so very much! BH, I will pm you.

Piano ...Peep sights are deadly ....and with practice you can shoot and kill anything just as far as you can with a scope ...as long as you can see it ....just place your target in the middle of the peep and SQUEEEEEEEZE the trigger .....night night .....I love shooting a peep sight ...  just seems people are more comfortable with a peep sight and reason being is you can not see your movement as if you were using a scope ..but I still like my scope so I can take out their eye balls :chuckle: :chuckle: :twocents:

OK, here it is with the scope mounted. I got this scope from one of the posters on this thread and am very thankful to him.

It's cool. The scope is lighted! Never had one of those before. I picked up the flip-ups from Midway for very little. That's where i bought my ammo, too. Saved some over Wholesale and they didn't charge me shipping. I will be shooting this weekend. This will be my new Damage elk cow, bear, coyote, and when they start selling the tags, wolf gun. I'm definitely psyched.

WSU for my daughter first, then reloading after she's done. One big investment at a time, thanks.

If you can swing the dies and the components, and drive to me.. we can sit down and make up some good loads for you... Will only do it while you are there, though... I will help work up the load you like, then we can sit down and knock out a hundred rounds or so if you like.
Even if not till this winter, you have an open offer...

Looks good and with that Mil-Dot reticle you can figure out your holdovers for extended range stuff once you start driving it.
