Title: my first matched elk sheds
Post by: Rufous on July 21, 2007, 11:25:28 PM
I was out scouting for bear in early April in the Dayton unit where I had a spring bear permit. I got in quite a hike. 6 mile round trip with me dropping off on one ridge at 3500' elevation to the canyon bottom at 2900' and then up the other side to 4100' before dropping back down into the bottom and back up to my truck. I did not see any bears but I did find a big 7 point elk shed when I was getting close to the bottom for the second time. I picked it up and marveled at its mass. I started down the hill and then thought I should look around for the other antler. It took only 2 or 3 minutes and I found it only about 15 yards away. I was stoked but then realized I had quite a pack job to get them out of there. I did it anyway as they are the first matched set I have ever found and they are mighty big and very symmetrical. They weighed about 30#. They were measured by an official state measurer at 401 1/8 gross and 388 6/8 net assuming a 40" inside spread credit.

I found another single shed during the bear hunt. I just got it measured today. It had a 7th point coming off of the 4th point. The shed measured 160 so with a 40" inside spread it would have grossed about 360. I am curious what the market is for selling sheds. Thanks, Rufous.

Good Golly Miss Molly! That's a set of antlers... Wow... Makes my 6x6 look almost puny. Yup, I'd hang onto those rascals. Not everyday that a fellow comes across antlers like that.

Say... You wouldn't want to tell me the exact location of those sheds now would ya???

Regards, Guy

I wonder if thats the big seven that has been running with the other 400 inch bull.  I guess he was HUGE!  That story is on here somewhere.

CONGRATS Rufous.   I think you would be absolutely NUTS for selling them, but thats just me.

it would be the right unit...
hmmm...inquiring minds want to know.
i agree on keeping the sheds along with everyone else...odds are you'll never find another set like them. i'd be kicking myself for the rest of my life...kind of like those baseball cards i should have hung onto when i was a kid. we all know that story.

Am I not seeing something, In that last pic of you holding them it looks like the G-4 on the Left antler is broken off.  I hope nothing happened to it, great find congrats, I would also hang on to those monsters.
