Title: New to area looking for hunting partner
Post by: Worldhunter on June 28, 2012, 12:39:14 PM
Hi,

I am new to the area and would like to find a few hunting buddies.  I am living in Olympia and have the following tags: Bear, Cougar, Deer (all season), and Elk (archery).  I prefer stalking to holding up in a tree stand when I hunt.  I have a four wheel drive pickup (split gas) and am ready to hit the woods ASAP to get some last minute scouting in. Send me a message if interested or you have any tips on where I should start scouting - thanks.

Welcome to Oly.

Not the best hunting locally, but you are central to alot of what the NW has to offer.
As for where to start? What type of experience or quality of animal are you looking for? Lots of blacktail country nearby and some good elk hunting to the West and to the South.

As far as experience I have been hunting most of my life, I consider myself above average skill wise.  I grew up in Idaho and mostly hunted deer, elk and coyote. I always strive to shoot big bucks (like everyone here) but do not consider myself a trophy hunter.

I had to look it up:
While John Soule was the man first known to write or say this phrase, it was made popular by a different man named Horace Greeley.  Greeley was the editor of the New York Tribune and helped found the Republican party.
John Soule first write "Go West, young man!" in the Terre Haute Express in 1851, but Horace Greeley was the man who made that phrase the overarching battle cry of manifest destiny and practically the motto of the 19th century in America.
Greeley was a very interesting man.  He was a failed Presidential candidate in 1872 against Grant's reelection, although he had the support of both the Democratic and much of the Republican party.  He had a lot of interesting and unusual advocacies, too.

I will take your advise and focus on the western hunting zones - thanks.

What are you looking to take?  Are you after a big bull or any legal elk?  I could give you some advice on where to go and I am very confident that you will get into elk.  If you are looking for a big bull it won't happen in this area, but you will see satellite 3, 4, and 5 point bulls.  You have to hike a long ways.

Good hunting partners are tough to come by, I'm always looking for new hunting buddies. I'm in shelton, not too far away from you. The fact that you're in Olympia also has me wondering what you're here for. School? Work? If you've got a facebook add me on there, Chad Burgess or try the facebook link below my avatar.
