So know a guy that got a tag in montana south of the capital. He was wondering if it would be worth hunting or if he should just go to the west side of the state since he has limited time to scout. Any general info would be great.

What kind of tag are we talking, deer, elk, goat, sheep, moose?
-
Oops deer
-
Deer are all over mt but the farher east you go there are more.

Kind of confused here, but if he got a limited entry permit for mule deer, he can only hunt mule deer in that unit. Otherwise, if he got a statewide deer license he can use it anywhere in the state that is not limited entry.
Mule deer numbers in the SW part of the state are pretty low right now.

He got a tag or a permit? A tag is good for almost the entire state, a permit is unit specific.

Agree with above, mule deer is all special permit, drawing only and if they have that they must stay in the unit they drew for. However if it is a general Deer A tag than you can hunt anywhere in the state, utilizing any equipment during the appropriate seasons, archery in sep-oct, rifle in oct-nov. I would say if you do not have a mule deer permit, you will want to stay in the bottoms so regardless of where you go do not get to high and stay out of the breaks as they are full of mule deer with limited whitetails. Headed there as we speak to fish, but spend two weeks hunting there every year.

Why? Did he say he didn't want to hunt mule deer? A general deer tag is still good for mule deer as long as its not a permit only area or tribal land.

I'll see if I can dig more info out of him. Thanks

what unit did he get drawn for? There is a lot of area south of the capitol.

Still waiting to get ahold of him.
