I have never hunted moose before but that sure looks like a nice one to me. What species of moose it that pictures. Sorry not familiar with them. Great photo!!
-
Not the first two weeks. Not big enough.
-
WACK! With my bow for sure! But I dont have a tag. :bash:
-
I'm passing Bone but marking with GPS. Lets see if you and Popes tutorials are sinking in for me. "Dont worry about the spread" he doesnt look that wide to me, Pope said to look for the ears to be framed by the inside of the paddles, this guy looks to be right at that mark.
"Paddle length is more important" I could be wrong but from this angle they dont look to be very long.
"7 or more points are important" again this is not the best angle but it looks to be a 5X5? with 3 brows on one side and split on the other.
The one thing I know he has that I am looking for are the brows, Pope said to make sure he has split brows and he does.
Well? Do you kick me in the ars for passing up a 30 yard broadside arrow shot?
-
Not the first two weeks. Not big enough.
Wow! You're selective! Remember that Shirias Moose is the smallest subspecies of the moose.
-
i dont know much about moose so i would take that one. too bad i didnt have a tag.
-
waiting for a couple more tag holders.......
-
While not a moose tag holder, I wouldnt take that bull with either a bow or a rifle till the last day. I would wait till the bitter end for it.
-
Good fronts, but not terrribly long paddles, but you'll make up some with the fronts. Not a lots of points, paddle width is pretty good. Probably not a first week or two shooter if I had the tag in my pocket.
-
Tough choice, especially early on, he's got the forked brows, the knubs on top, from teh angle its hard to tell teh length of the paddle and the width with his ears up, but he's got a great cape and I love the big brows on the front end, my tag is filled. :)
I'll be curious to find out a little more about this bull, but he just became my desktop.
-
Hell, outside of the ears and nose, that moose looks very edible to me. I have never been able to eat any kind of horn or antler. He's dead in my sights if I had a tag.
-
That's a really close call. His paddle length isn't that long and that's his deficiency as well a spread. His palm brows are very nice. The rack overall looks small. I would guess his spread at 38-40".
Here's my conservative score:
palm length L 18
palm length R 18
Palm width L 8
Palm width R 8
points L: 7
points R 7
spread 38
base L: 7
base R: 7
Total Score: 118"
So if my conservative score is 120 then my "reaching" score would be about 130". He isn't B&C but a good respectable bull. I would pass.
-
:chuckle:
Well first of all, I need to smack Rob in the back of the head. If you have this guy in bow range take him. This angle does wonders to fool you with overall paddle length. First lesson, this is a veiw often presented with. Try to resist popping him in the nose. He's a bit bigger than Popes guestimate. His brows are long out fornt and that really adds to the score. In fact, his brows add about 12 inches to that overall length score on both sides then quite a bit more than the 18 on the main paddle. This is a good 140 bull and a definite trophy for an archer, and even a rifle guy should be happy with this guy. The reason I posted this bull is this is the kind that is going to haunt you. Yep, there will be bigger, but there will be much smaller ones too. Regular tag, I'd have dumped him for sure archery equipment. Rifle most likely. Raffle tag, I'd still be hunting.
-
Id like to see a side profile of his antlers. I like the looks of his big brows! Did you take that picture Bone?
-
Glad I passed that test, this is the kind of bull you don't want to run into first thing on opening morning. Definately a trophy but you might be haunted by what if's if you decide not to take him and end up with a smaller bull or what if I had held out even longer could I have turned up the big one.
-
There will always be what ifs. Take the bull that is going to make you happy and never regret it.
-
The one thing throwing me off about this bull is the big brow palms. You only get those if you are an old bull. However, from the angle in the photo the palms don't look that long. I could buy 22" palm lengths, but I would be surprised if they were much longer. Unless I'm deceived by the photo?
-
Yep, he's down, oh crap I am in the wrong state :chuckle:... Ah what the heck it is a OIL tag and a different species of Moose and they all eat the same, so yes sir, tag is filled and I am on my way home with meat in the truck..................... Maybe now that I filled the freezer the wife will give a large kitchen pass to the Northwest Terrorities for some Muskox hunting.............. :chuckle:
-
a-men . Did you put in for AK Musk this year? That damn Vek keeps sending me info on His dall hunt progress and quite frankly I think I might die. I just know I am his long lost brother, and one of the few that could keep up with him.
-
Not the first two weeks. Not big enough.

I've been putting in for 10 years, and drew 49 degrees north. The next State record bull well come out of that unit. I have the month of October to hunt. It well be hard but I'd pass on him.
-
Here is another one to gander at. how about this guy?
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fmooseboys2_edited-1.jpg&hash=893ec83c1bcb712ef8f6c6165c7056a98920f413)
-
i whould say but it just wouldnt be fair.
-
Passing on that guy unless its the last day of the season, a nice bull but definately lacks the WOW factor a big bull should have in my opinion.
-
I don't know. That's a bigger bull than you think. I think he's as big as the other one...
-
Now that one Bone would go down.
-
There will always be what ifs. Take the bull that is going to make you happy and never regret it.
:yeah:
I would be terrible at field judging a good WA moose. I spent too much time gawking dad's buddies AK pig.

-
Yeah when one of those AK boys steps out there is kind of a shock factor when you have been chasing Shiras around. Hell even the cows make you think Damn, thats a big animal. Thats whats fun about moose hunting or any type of trophy hunting, its what appeals to your senses. I would have dropped the first one and I would have let the second one walk. Pope is right, they probably score very similiar, but you know most moose do that are shootable. What, 30 inches or less seperates a dink from a Booner. This next one will be a no brainer for you all. I think its out of Canada though and not a shiras. Still I know you like looking at moose pics.

-
I'm saying yea to the one above :chuckle:
Regarding your first photo.... The fronts kinda give this one away to me. I didn't pin him at 140 but pushing that. When their fronts get that big it usually means a pretty decent critter. The 2nd one seems to have OK fronts/length but seems smaller to me.
-
would ya or not?

I would with my bow

Passing first trip

And Rob if you do must I remind you again what will happen? (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Fmisbehaving%2F5.gif&hash=5e53873183531ef30903b6644dab73be750f8c31)

LMAO

I'm still learning to field judge moose and I thank you for the pictures. This last moose is good, but he's no record bull. He looks no wider then 45". Good fronts. It would be nice to look at a side view of this bull. His palms are dished, older bulls are flatter. But, like I said, I'm still learning.

I will get in line behind you M_Ray!! I would not pass on that bull, which is why I will never get a record book bull if I EVER draw the tag! :bash:
-
I didn't know where to put this so I'll add it here. This is a article on the health benefits of moose.

I have a couple more for you guys.

In general a 45" w/ good fronts will usually be a pretty damn nice Shiras. Obviously there's more to than just that but all in all when you start w/ those 2 qualities I'd bet that you're often lookin at a shooter.
-
That bull is no record bull. If I want to shoot a record bull I'd have to pass on him. I just need to make sure I don't pass on the wrong bull. That's why I'm learning all I can about field judging moose. There's some big bulls in 49, so I'm going to try and hold off for a bull of a life time to top off my once in a life time kill in Washington.
-
He may not be a record bull but he would look pretty good on the wall. I wouldn't pass him up.
-
I would GPS his location, and about the third week of my hunt I would take him. When time is running out, my pickyness well go away.
-
yea you could always pass him up so some else can shoot him.
-
They don't get big if you shoot'em when there small ;)
-
Yea besides its a once in a lifetime hunt provided you harvest one ;)
