I am in the market for a new rifle. Don't have to much to spend but could probably go up to $500 without optics. I am not married to a caliber but need something to take down bear or elk. Probably will be using it most for bear as I bowhunt for elk and deer. I just want to see what ya'll recommend.

338 Federal, not the 338 win mag.

Bump your price up 30 bucks and get a tikka. Something between 243 and 300 rum should work.
-
:yeah:
-
Loads of decent deals in the Classifieds, I'm partial to the 7mm.
-
I have a Ruger 7mm in the classifieds with a 3x9 burris multi plex scope. $350.00.

That would be perfect for what you're looking for, and the price is right. The scope is decent too so there wouldn't be a need to change anything.
If you buy new, I was going to recommend getting a 30/06 in maybe a Savage 110 or a Weatherby Vanguard.

I agree with the tikka. pay a lil less then 6 and have yourself a nice gun. 300 win mag or 300 rum

I just got a savage .300 win mag with a nikon bd scope for $480. I put a limbsaver pad on it and it feels great! :bfg:

You beat me to it. 30-06 and Savage. Done.

Priced right and with a great customer service.

My family likes Browning A-Bolts. We use common cartridges, 270win, 7mm-08, 270short mag, 30-06. The gun in the classifieds sounds like one to look at.
-
Another vote for Savage in 30-06
-
I'm not real partial to any specific make of gun, I have Ruger's, Brownings and Remingtons and have been happy with them all. All shoot out of the box plenty accurate for big game hunting. I'd focus most on caliber and just find a reasonably priced gun in that caliber that fits you. Honestly sounds as if your more of a bowhunter, so your probably not going to shoot the gun a lot, so I'd stick with something that is not huge on recoil and fairly inexpensive to shoot, so that when you do have time at the range you can spend it shooting, and not letting your shoulder quit hurting. All the specifics you've mentioned, I'd probably suggest you go with a 30-06.

30-06,remington or ruger

Great choice here and if you get tired of the 30.06, the Savage 100 is designed so that the average Joe can replace the barrel out in the field into a different caliber. MidwayUSA has barrels in different calibers for $134.99 and up.

Some questions first off...
How well do you handle recoil? Do you have any kids that may use this rifle as a beginner hunting weapon? Do you reload? Do you want an ulralight type weapon or no problems carrying around a 10 lb. gun by the time you get scope and ammo included?? Do you hunt east or west side????
7mm-08 up to a 338 WM will work.... Personally, I like short action stuff. So any caliber based off the .308 Win. or any of the Short Mags would be my choice..
Personally for a 300 yard and less gun, you can not beat the .338 Federal. You want more range, jump up to a 300 Win. Short Mag... Still a short action, less weight to carry, and will get the job done.
-
270 or 30-06, people buy these great big caliber guns to kill bear, well you dont need to, just learn how to shoot your animal properly...... read all about jack oconner, killed everything with a 270 and i mean everything that a fella can hunt
-
Every animal has been killed with an 30-06. It is my one scoped gun. The MOST important fact about 06 is the availability of ammo. You can buy light 110 grain pills that shoot a little flatter or 22o grain to really lay the smack down. I would also add that you can purchase Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Rounds if a member of a affiliate club for CHEEP. :twocents: Just some of the reasons i use a 30-06

well the biggest recoil I have shot is a .300WSM and it was fine I only have one other rifle right now and it is a 30-30, no kids, don't reload, don't care to much about weight and I will be hunting mostly wetside....
-
I'd stay with a 30 cal. or above. Bigger wound channel for fat bears.
-
any of the .308 based cartridges will do the trick from the 7mm-08 on up. I still like the .338 Federal for an all around gun on the wetside. If you want more OOMPFFFFF you can bounce up to a magnum.. But you bounce up in price on your ammo since you do not reload.
-

270, 30/06, 308. They are boring, but they get the job done. Ammo is cheap and readily available. I've had great luck with Weatherby vanguards and ruger m77 mark 2's which can be head cheap. Kinda Like a ford truck, nothing fancy, but gets the job done.
If youre feeling frisky try a Weatherby vanguard in 257 Weatherby mag. Ammo would be a more expensive but a very capable gun. Most new guns from big company's are pretty darned good. Kinda have to go out if your way to get a crappy rifle anymore.
-
I have a savage accutrigger in 30-06 with a nikon 4-12X40 scope all tolled I payed just over 500 for the entire set up. I am very green when it comes to hunting and shooting but I easily put 3 inside a 50 cent piece at 100 yards consistently; so the Savage has my vote and you can't really go wrong with an 06 it will put down anything in Washington.

:puke: Tikka...
Why don't you like tikka...I have only heard good things so I am curious?
He is just messed up. Don't mind him :chuckle:
You will hear only a couple things bad about the tikka's the stock and the clip. Flat out they are the best shooting gun around the 500 mark out there. We have 5 of them and every one shoot's lights out. I have been around 30+ of them and they are all great guns. If you don't like the stock buy a after market one, there is a lot popping up now days.
I would say the one all around gun I would go with is a 270 wsm. I am a big fan, I never thought I would be but I really love them. Will kill anything that walk around here.

Savages won't win any beauty contests but out of the box they are about as accurate as rifles get. The 30 cals have the biggest bullet selection for someone who doesn't reload, but 7mms and 270's will kill elk, deer and bear no problem. IMO glass is more important than todays rifles. Put your money into optics. All major brands of rifles are reliable and accurate enough to hunt with to 300+ yards.
-
Marlin 45/70 xlr......OH yeah, you are on a budget :dunno: Don't count out the 45/70 as a great west side gun. It will take deer, bear and elk with no problem. If you shop around you can find some used guide guns for fairly cheap. I personally like the XLR as it has the longer barel and it is a 300 yard gun all day long with the leverevolution bullets. It is a lever gun which you are familiar with beings that you have a 30-30. Fast follow up shots and not alot of recoil either.
-
Someday I will have a 45/70...but right now I'm looking for a bolt gun.

That applies to Tikka owners. :chuckle:

come on biggerhammer either throw out some reasons or stop trying to poke the bear...as they say "s*** or get off the pot" :bash: :bash:

Here's a quick run down for you but remember it doesn't matter to me what you hump through the woods.
Crap fit and feel, trinket stock, crap ejection port that requires complete removal of the magazine to correct any malfunction. The magazine design is a train wreck, blah , blah , blah.
One of those issues is a capital offense when it comes to firearm. To each their own, a Tikka doesn't even ride in my trucks. I'll seat belt a wet lab straight out of the river on a leather passenger seat before I'd let a Tikka slide around in the bed of my truck for a day and that's no joke.

To be fair, and while I do respect his opinions pretty highly when it comes to firearms, but bigger can impulse buy things that I have to budget for half a year. If he buys a 700 that just isn't good enough, he can afford to make it a tack driver or experiment with it and not care a hole lot. I vote for the savage though. You can tinker with it far more easily. It's not very accrurate? Throw a ne barrel on it! Trigger too heavy? Adjust it! Etc. Plus you can get a decent combo withh scope brand new for under 500.

Rem. Model 700 .30-06.

:yeah: or in .300 win mag.
-
I'm in a $$ bind and I'll sell my 30-06 for $500
Remington Buckmaster SPS w/Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x with a BDC, Butler Creek pop up covers (the front is problematic) Limbsaver, padded sling w/ammo loops. I don't have pics.

Whats the most important thing? How do they shoot? We have never had any problems with our 5 and out of the probably 100+ people on this site that own them. I have yet to hear of a problem, or see any problems in any of my friends, family, oh and clients guns
I will give you that the stock is no manners or mcmillian. Still fits good enough to shoot 1/2"-3/4" in all my guns. for 500.00 what do you get. A great shooting gun and a cheaper stock and clip that still shoots lights out.
To each there own

I don't think Marlin has been mentioned yet. The X7 (http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/CenterfireBoltAction/x7.asp) should be worth a look. I have no experience with them personally, but have read good things about the rifle. I'd probably go for 30-06.
Here (http://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_product.asp?dealer_id=409680&item=XL7-3006&instock=all&manufact_combo=Marlin&mod_ser_combo=None&category_combo=None&model=None&g_type=Rifle&act_type=&finish_type=None&calib_combo=30-06&sight_class_combo=None&price_range=None&left_handed=&youth=&Offset_rec=0& num_rec=50&item_num=) is a Marlin X7 on sale for $332. That seems like a great price to me.

Says Tikka, but is made in Sako Factory... A very accurate AFFORDABLE gun for the working stiff.... I want at least a couple in my safe before I am done....

Another candidate should be the Thompson/Center Venture. It (http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/venture.php) can be had for $463 (http://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_product.asp?dealer_id=409680&item=5566&instock=all&manufact_combo=None&mod_ser_combo=None&category_combo=None&model=None&g_type=None&act_type=&finish_type=None&calib_combo=30-06&sight_class_combo=None&price_range=%24300+to+%24500&left_handed=&youth=&Offset_rec=0&num_rec=100&item_num=) and it is made in USA and comes with an accuracy guarantee.
If you wanted to be really unique, you could get it in 30TC and have a cartridge that almost nobody else has..............but a 30-06 would probably be a wiser choice. Who knows how long 30TC will be around.
-
The venture just had some recalls if I remember right.
-
I've got a Savage Model 10 20 inch barrel that's a 1000 yard shooter. You don't need these overpriced guns when a Savage will get it done. Who cares if it's fugly !!!!!
-
The venture just had some recalls if I remember right.
I'm sure they've got them all squared away by now.

That's because you haven't shot that piece of crap Tikka enough, thats due to your inner self telling you it's crap and you have been listening but just didn't know it. :chuckle:

Weight
-
Yep weight. Some will also say shorter bolt throw and stiffer action, but probably not anything most people would notice unless they are super serious shooters.
-
ah makes sense I don't think that much weight will matter much to me..
-
If one is concerned about weight, even 4-6 more pounds. Then they better lay of the twinkies, Ho-Ho's and Ding-Dongs! If ones worried about the pack weight of a rifle, then maybe one should consider shooting smaller animals so there is not as much to pack out. :chuckle:

I disagree with this sentiment.
I bought my tikka due to it's light weight, accuracy guarantee and price point. The fact that it fit well was an added bonus, the oversize palm swell makes it confidence inspiring to shoot due to the very natural feeling grip.
I have heavy rifles and they spent the majority of the time slung on my shoulder, my tikka spends 99% of the time in my hands; much closer to my shoulder and much quicker to fire. The stock is ugly for sure but it fits the barreled action and me well, it's accuracy has been nothing short of stunning. I've never had a feed or ejection problem and I have never seen one, the magazine design is extremely simple and seems to function without fail. I even use the factory rings that everyone says (that doesn't own a tikka) won't work without issue.
I was dubious initially but after carrying and shooting mine I am sold on the t3's, mine shoots sissy ammo (factory bullets) into 3/8" groups; pretty tough to complain about that!
-
There ya go! That sissy factory ammo compliments that sissy rifle perfectly. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:Going without sox will save you a couple ounces. :chuckle: :chuckle: ;)

Thanks for the trigger info, I'm not into lever gun real big. I know a good deal when I see it though, a couple weeks a go I picked up a Winchester 30-30 and a 1895 G in 45-70 as a package deal.
-
one thing i didnt mention is i am far from an expert shooter or ballistic expert but i have shot alot of differant rifles over the years and the rifle i own is the best damn shootn gun i have ever shot a bit heavy but its a ruger #1 single shot falling block in 30-06, i have killed a few animals with her and she hasnt failed me yet :twocents:

Do not forget to look at the HOWA 1500 rifles as well.... Awesome inexpensive rifles as well.

Just adjust your trigger from 6# to 3#, then you can pack a heavier rifle.

Why don't you like tikka...I have only heard good things so I am curious?
Just from what I've seen him post on this site, he must have at least a hundred grand sunk into guns. And with all that top shelf gear, here is a modest little rifle that's accessible for the majority of sportsmen and is much more than adequate to perform the hunting functions for which it was built.
It's the same reason that Ferrari owners hate the Nissan GTR.
