Title: Need help, what is the best video camera?
Post by: Houndhunter on July 11, 2012, 12:38:09 AM
I have been wanting to make my own hunting videos for a long time, been looking at a few cameras but I want the right one. I would really appreciate any info from guys that film, what works best for you? My budget is between 600-800$. I will be editing on a MacBook, as that seems to be the best way to go. Any info or tips would be great,

Thanks,

HoundHunter

I'd call the experts at Campbells http://www.campbellcameras.com/ (http://www.campbellcameras.com/)   These guys really know their stuff, have a great selection and teach classes on taking hunting videos.  Everyone I have talked with from there was helpful and answered every question I could think of.  I think they can build a package to fit just about any budget.

Houndhunter, what kind of hunts are you looking to film
And what's your goal for the footage?

The guy at Campbells are usually very helpful but most of the cameras they deal in are going to be for a higher budget then what you stated.
We have a Sony SR11 that we use as kinda a knock around that does a pretty good job. They sold for around $1,100 when they first came out but can be picked up much cheaper now. It only has 12X optical zoom though so may not be what your looking for if your looking to film rifle hunts.

Campbells is way overpriced :twocents:

Don't forget the tripod, fluid head, and audio.
With a total budget of $800 I would look at a:
Canon HF 21 -$400
Slik/Manfrotto Tripod - $100
Manfrotto 701 fluid head -$150
Rode shotgun Mic - $150

Thanks for the replys, my goal is to film everything. From fishing to hounding to high country bucks I want try to get film of it. I dont think it will ever turn into something id sell more just for me personally. I want good quality but by all means it doesn't need to be professional.

Ya I've seen the Campbells on TV but those were over my budget.

I do have a tripod, but what exactly is a fluid head? I will look into the Sony sr11 and the canon. Will most cameras need an extra attachment for audio?

No need for additional audio if the video is for personal use.

The fluid head moves in a seamless motion (don't know the science behind it but no jerky starts and stops).

The biggest issue with the small cannon is low light conditions.

Do you film with the canon jphelps? I saw that the reviews were ok, it said the software was for PC only but id imagine i could use the programs on a mac? The low light issue was brought up alot too, and say if i ever did think about making a video to sell you have to pay royalties.

does adding audio make a big difference though?

Really i should take a class or something to see exactly what i want and learn more about it, but i probably wont :chuckle:. Thanks for the continued replys, all info and tips help out alot. I could spend more on a camera but I was thinking 800$ would be enough.

I have a  camcorder I bought on sale at Costco two years ago for $300. I defintely wish I would have spent more. My main complaint in my price range  is image stabilization. I can't content on research or personal experience with products in your price range but I sure hope that for anu handheld shooting you do that the picture looks more stable than mine.

Find the camera you like and then look for "OPEN BOX" sales. They are returns with nothing wrong, not refurbs, customers didn't like them. That's what I did. Look at www.huppins.com (http://www.huppins.com) They are a high end dealer in Spokane, that's where I bought mine from.

The GL2 used to be one of the "go to" cameras for outdoor filming but the problem with the GL2 is that its not HD and thats where everything in the video industry has gone now. So you can always find lots of them used at a good price.

I have spent a lot of time researching and using video cameras for hunting.  In my opinion, Panasonic makes some of the best.  I would stay compact and spend $400 - $500 for the sound of what you are going to do with it; you sound similar to myself.  The problem with spending much more than that is the zoom abilities go way down with more in price and that is about the cutoff, it is strange, but the less expensive, smaller video cameras have a much better zoom than the models that are more expensive.  With my Panasonics ( as with the sonys in the same price range) I can zoom in clear from a long distances no prob.  I would also stay compact.

I have a page at my website devoted to the best cameras for hunting that is broke down by price range that has some test footage on it, check it out here: http://www.bestforhunting.com/best-video-camera-for-hunting/ (http://www.bestforhunting.com/best-video-camera-for-hunting/).

Also, I am developing an inexpensive product for use with compact  video cameras that you might be interested in.  The people who sign up for my email list on the right hand side bar will be the first ones to hear about it here in a few months.

Im liking that panosonic with the 21 optical and 400 bucks , My canon hf10 is only 12 power optical and could really use that 21.

I actually sold my hf g10 and bought two of those Panasonics (tm90k from last year, but equivalent to this years v700).  It also has a hybrid  zoom to make it over 40X and still clear,  The zoom on the hf1o is worthless unless you are sitting in a stand surrounded by forest.  The video quality is close as well between the two.  The price, zoom, and size make the Panasonic the better buy.

I have the Panasonic HDC-TM700. The HD is a huge improvement over regular format video and this camera has pretty good audio without using remote mics. They cost a few bills though, if you want a good cheaper HD camera, try a cheaper sony HD, they are only $400 to $500, we are using a couple of them as well as the panasonic and you can watch any of the HD video on larger screen TV's.

+1, optical zoom gives a much better product than a digitally enhanced zoom.

Maybe the thread title should be changed to best video camera on a budget because there is no Panasonic camera that compares to the Red cameras. :twocents:

i was watching some elk up bear hunting, got some great video of them at 100yards with the 21x zoom. got right up close and it looked great played back on my TV.

i am having problems with my tripod making noise tho in the video, i couldn't tell when i was using it because i cant hear it but then when i played it back it the camera picked up on the noise every time i moved my camera. gonna grease the whole thing down, but maybe i just need a better tripod.

BTW video taping solo hunts sucks lol, i found out its not going to be as easy as i though and i wont be able to really use it much when I'm doing some serious hunting. but still I'm having fun with it, hopefully buy spring i will have enough to make a good video journal of alot of my hunting and fishing trips.

You should seriously consider the Panasonic V700M.  It has great zoom, is compact, does well in low light, great image stabilization, shoots crisp HD video with wide angle, and its inexpensive; all the things you could ask for in the Northwest. I have spent a while on a tight budget trying to get some good video of the activities you mentioned.  In fact, I have wrote a webpage dedicated to the Best Video Cameras for hunting where I break them down by price range ( http://www.bestforhunting.com/best-video-camera-for-hunting/ (http://www.bestforhunting.com/best-video-camera-for-hunting/) ). Check out the site if you want to see some videos I filmed of some beautiful animals with several of the cameras I mention, including the Panasonic V700M.  I have found that with all the Northwest has to offer, you will need a camera that can do it all.  If you go with the Panasonic V700M , then you will have some $ left over for a good tripod and an SD card.

That is funny.  Trying to jump from a $800 total budget, to a Red.
If you get a Red, get ahold of me, and I would be honored to have you film my hunts.

I think some of "Searching For West" was filmed with Red Cameras.
That was a killer video.

Getting some more good video, but I'll need that fluid head as my film is still a but edgy on my tri pod.

Red cameras are out if the question lol
