The grandson went into the desert unit off I 90 and took the Dotson road and then the roads off of that to get an idea of the unit. He did;nt get there early and it was hot but he mostly wanted to see some of the unit. Next time we will go to the mar don and go in from that was to try and familiarize us with the area. Have read the reports on the hunt and will keep scouting if anyone has hunted it before or has any ideas holler.

I've never hunted deer in that unit but I know that when I hunt pheasants there I always come across deer.

Don;t know if pheasant is open then but that would be fun.

Del, I was shooting carp last week and saw a respectable buck and a few does. I will pm you with specifics.

What tag (weapon, season) did you draw?

I've been there twice and entered the same way as your grandson. I saw several deer both times.
I was after coyote - with no luck.
I hear it's a great place for large deer! :yike:

He drew the rifle deer I think from oct.26 to nov.4 we will go over a few more times when it cools down to try and get familiar with the area. Can you camp in there or would it be better to stay at mar-don.

Go in off of Road C SW, end of the road to the left. You can camp there, bring bug spray.

Lots of great camping opportunity as most of the land is public. It's a neat place to camp if you go in the northside off the Job Corp dike. There's an actual forest up there now...good trees to hang a buck from.

Once it gets daylight, those deer will be hanging out in the Russian Olive trees. Sometimes you only have a few minutes first thing in the morning to see them leaving the alfalfa fields.

Bring Bug spray and a snakebite kit maybe I should have looked more before we leaped. It will be fun I got a good map and using the computer so will be fun planning our hunt. I thank you guys for the help I live on the coast at westport and can give fishing reports if anyone is heading this way.

You might want to try coming in from the north end off the frontage road also. We saw bucks in there a couple years ago when we had a doe tag. And anything off of the Dodson road holds deer also. The rut should be going for your hunt so any place you find does now will probably have some bucks around later. Those russion olives can be hard to thou but good luck to you.

I wouldn't worry about the snakes that time of year. Bug protection for sure though. Keep in mind that Duck season will be in full swing during your hunt when you scout.

I 2nd this as a good place to camp and scout from.

Make sure you know your boundaires on the reserves and Potholes SP. You can also access off Rd A or Division Rd from the S. Frontage Road.
Snakes are not a big concern.

I've yet to see a snake in the desert unit and I have spent my whole life in it.

Thanks I have 80 percent hearing loss and I have always worried about snakes.

I too have never seen snakes there. Only in the areas with rocks, like the seep lakes. Be worried more about ticks and mosquito s and weird spider bites this time of year. They'll all be gone by deer season.

I almost stepped on one back in the 70's at Harris Lake. Dad off'd it with his .22 pistol. Only one any of us in the family ever saw in there in many, many years as a kid hiking in and fishing Harris, Desert and Dune, etc. Those were the days, they had some HUGE rainbows in them. Not so much anymore. :(
