Title: Drainin' the main vein
Post by: 92xj on July 15, 2012, 07:49:29 PM
When's my 7 month pup going to pee like a man and not a sissy little girl dog?
I show him how to do it in the yard lifting my leg and pissing on everything but he continues to squat.
Never had a male dog before, so not sure when this change will happen or if it will...

Some dogs never do.  I have a 9 year old lab that has never one time lifted his leg.

Come to think of it, my 1.5 year old doesn't lift his leg either

Often its a learned behavior from other males.  I had one male who never lifted his leg in the 12 or 13 yrs he was with us.  I have had two bitches that did lift their legs and they territory marked  :dunno: I've had more female cats that were sprayers than males as well....

If you really want him to lift his leg on things maybe take him to a public dog park where he can get some pointers from some canine bro's  :chuckle:

My lab started peeing like a male dog at about 12 months old if I remember right.

Probably when they realize its easier to mark stuff if they lift their leg.......... :dunno:

Cool deal, thanks.

It really doesnt matter to me.  I'm just new to this male dog thing.  I just figured they all switched over at some point.  Didnt realize some never did.  Just educating myself.

It is more of a territorial thing than a masculine habit.  My bulldoggy only does it to mark or when other dogs are around.  Some dogs just dont at all.  Dog park good idea.  Age is also a factor.  Its a little difficult peeing while standing on one leg!  You are talented! :chuckle:

One of the main reasons I have got female dogs is that I can't stand the males pissing on everything. I would love a male that didn't do that!

Just keep going out in the yard 3 or 4 times a day and showing him what to do.  Probably in a couple weeks he'll figure it out.  I hope you don't live in a cul de sac!

I heard on duck hunting chat that if you hold his equipment for him while he is peeing it will really speed the pups progress to dog-hood.

This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with the Air Force SP K-9's in my military days.  They said as a form of hazing, they told the new guys on their first or second day that since they were new, they were on aggression suppression duty.  Aggression suppression required the new K-9 officer to take the male dogs into a back room and give them a "manual release".  They always let the new officer get REALLY close to starting before they stopped them.  Sounded like a hilarious initiation.

So, that worked good for your dog and the others in the neighborhood?  How much do you charge to train dogs to do this?

rasbo, that happens!  Our pastor stopped by one time and while he was standing there talking to my wife and I our little peekapoo walked over, lifted his leg, and peed on his shoe.  I was trying not to look, hoping the pastor wouldn't notice.  It didn't work, he looked down and said, "I guess he doesn't like my sermons".  What do you say?  We're sorry just doesn't seem to work.  Later of course, after I quit rolling on the ground laughing, I told the dog don't do that any more.

This could be serious. Some questions:
1. Does he take the bow out of your Yorky's hair and wear it himself?
2. Do you ever hear "YMCA" playing late at night after everyone's gone to bed?
3. Does he prefer beer or reisling?
4. When you tell him to shake, does his wrist seem extra floppy?

You may need to send him to Butch Dog School. There's one near Cle Elum called Bitches to Butches. These dogs can be fixed to turn normal!

On a slightly more serious note, I'm not familiar with the inner workings of hunting working dogs but I would think some socialization may be in order. Sometimes dogs need to learn to be dogs.  :twocents:

Be thankful. You won't have to clean off your rims and tires all the time. My buddies lab will pee on any strangers leg if the person is in his yard.

Our Britt has lifted his leg to pee once (that we have witnessed) in his 2.5 years of life. I believe that it truly is a socially learned behavior. He isn't around another male dog that lifts, so he doesn't do it. It is nice to have a dog that doesn't spray everything is site. I have heard that it may have something to do with being fixed at an early age, not sure how true that is.

My wife runs a dog boarding facility.  I'd say its about 50/50% regarding those that lift vs. squatting.  Nothing to worry about.

Best way to get one that pees like you like is to choose one with all go,no quit, big nuts.Mine are all kenneled and they consider it a challenge to see who can pee through the highest diamond of the chainlink onto their neighbors side.

Seriously..................... when the dog matures it will lift it's leg,if it is submissive it may never lift it's leg,if it's an alpha it will try and pee higher than the last whizzer that was there.I had a female that hiked her leg in the air and whizzed, she would hike her leg and squirt on strangers too.
