Spike bull restrictions : elk yaken in those units must have at least one antler with no branches originating more than four inch above where the antler attaches to the skull an animal with a spike on one side (1x2) is legal in spike only units. An animal with more than one antler point more than 4 inches above where the antler attaches to the skull on both sides (2x2) is illegal.
So i recently got a picture of a bull with a funny drop tine on one side has 2 points on it but both go down and has 4 points on one side. Some say i could shoot him and some say no. I know a picture would help but i dont have them loaded yet. The part im unsure about is the (1x2) in the definition dors that mean only a 1x2 can be shot in a spike area or can i shoot a 1x3 or more.
-
The way I read it is as long as one side is legal the other would not matter. So in theory you could shoot a 1x6.
-
:yeah: I watched that very thing happen last season
-
A 1 by anything is a legal spike, except in "True spike" areas.

This is kinda what the bull i have on camera looks like but much smaller.
-
Could you shoot that bull in a spike unit. It would make me nervous.
-
I wouldn't. :twocents:
-
I think im with you Grundy. I think the headache and *censored* you would get from the game department wouldn't be worth it.
-
I'll do it for you and save you the trouble. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

That bull looks legal to me, that drop is less than 4 inches above where the antler attaches to the skull
-
Yes you could shoot that bull in a spike only unit (not in a true spike unit) if there is only the one point on the left side. On the other hand I don't think I would post pics online and subject myself to unsolicited opinions from the general public as some would probably not agree.
-
The picture posted is just one i found online as a example. I know by definition its a spike on the one side but its the fact that i know its not truly a spike elk that makes me nervous. The 1x2 part of the definition has me a little confused also does that mean only a 1x2 can ne shot.
-
It is a legal spike.
-
Check this one out. This was posted last year http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php?topic=86756.0 (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php?topic=86756.0). That is a legal spike only bull. That picture of the one with a drop tine is iffy. I would say it would depend on how you taking the meaning of the rule but I wouldn't shoot it.
-
I'd kill it because it's legal. Especially if you have decent pics of it on a game cam and can check it out ahead of time. Hell, if you have a good one after he hardens off, maybe print it and take it to a gamie and ask him?
Such a unique rack, it would be a shame not to harvest it if you had the opportunity just because of some indefinite legal mumbo-jumbo.
-
Don't make it too hard. This is what you need to know:
"Spike Bull Restrictions: Elk taken in these units must have at least one antler with no branches originating more than four inches above where the antler attaches to the skull."
pg 45 of game regs
After that they give two examples (1 legal and 1 illegal) but those aren't the only examples they could have used. They could have said 1x6 vs 6x6. My assumption is that they don't want to promote shooting 1x6 nor is it something that happens often and thus they used a much more common example of a 1x2.
-
The picture that is posted is a legal spike bull and I would shoot it with no problem. My daughter shot a elk somewhat like that and the game warden took a picture of it to show his fellow wardens and told me that it was certainly a legal spike.
-
The picture posted was just an example i found on the net. When i get the picture of the card and on the computer ill let you guys decide. I should print the picture take it to the wdfw office in mill creek and see what they say.
-
legal. One side is a spike then you are good to go.
-
Shoot. I don't understand the interpretation unless you're having a hard time judging 4" (that's what she said). Kill it. Legal. End of story.
-
Im going to ask a game warden what it is. But in all reality I'll probably never see him again.
-
I watched a similar bull last year all the way up to the night before the opener. I had pics and a friend had sheds off him. Took the pics to a warden and he said absolutely legal. Hopefully he survived last year, but have yet to get any pics of him so far.
Shoot away!!! :bfg:
-
The bull pictured is totally legal in a spike area.... I shot one like that a couple of years back, with no reservations, and the warden had no problem with it. :)
-
Soooo...D-rock are you still going to share a pic of the bull in question? Would like to at least  over him? :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
-
Yeah i keep forgetting to bring the camera home from work.

Ok Dan-o err, I mean D-Rock. I have faith in you.

I don't see what the problem is. I have a hard time getting excited over a spike, but a spike by anything else would be a trophy spike to me. I saw a 7 X Spike w/ 20 inch drop tine once. I would have shot it with out a question and shared it with all of you, because it is awesome and 100% legal. Anybody that complains if you shoot that bull is jealous; most of us would be happy for you and envious.

:yike: :yike: :yike: :bash: :bash: :bash: Man, this is worse then Dan-o. At least with Dan-o we know there's no picks because he always loses his camera but here it's torture because you know there's pics and it's just taking for ever to get on here! The suspense, the horror, the humanity...... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Did your computer eat the picture? You can PM me a copy if you don't want to share with everybody. :)

That pic is a legal spike..... My buddy shot one last year that was a 3x6 point wise.... On the spike side it had one low browtine and another fork off the base growing into the bulls right eye and under the hide next to the skull with a beam length of 32"..... (which you couldn't ever see) The 6 side was 44" long main beam normal configuration..... Bull was 3 1/2-4 1/2 years old.... With two different broadheads in his left front shoulder..... One not being even legal for WA..... A warden even saw it..... So he told me... I wasn't there.... I saw it when he got back hung the quarters in my shop and we cut it up.... He had a European mount done..... Looks pretty cool and is usually more of a topic then his 187" WA MD......
