Title: Bow Hunting for Elk

I'm a michigan bow hunter and I'm looking for some info to see if there's a place to hunt Elk around Kalama,Wa.98625 I have a non-hunting brother in-law living there and he doesn't have much help in this. I'm also a traditional Broadhead maker and would like to do some field work on my product. Please pass along any information in this matter.

Post by: bobcat on March 24, 2007, 01:49:05 PM: Sure, there's great elk hunting near Kalama. Go east, or west, and you can get into lots of elk. But, it can be very difficult hunting, especially if you're not local and aren't able to scout before the season. I'd suggest either the Winston (520) unit, or Ryderwood (530.) I think Winston has got to be the most popular archery unit in western Washington, so expect to have lots of company. They are both open for early archery season, which is 2 weeks in mid-September, for 3 point minimum, bulls only.

Post by: Muleyslyr on March 26, 2007, 11:21:42 AM: I can't really give you any better advice than bobcat did, but watch out for outta-state prices. There pretty spendy for an elk tag.....around $400. For areas like that, it might be better to check em' out first, see if that's what your interested in, then kick down the money. I realize your in MI, so I would just do as much research as you can so you know what getting yourself into. Good Luck

Post by: PolarBear on March 27, 2007, 07:09:16 PM: Ryderwood is a good one. I got my raghorn there last season. However, a lot of the better hunting areas in the Ryderwood/Boisfort are walk-in only. A timber co. has bought a lot of the land and keeps the gates closed for motorized vehicles. St. Helens is another great place to hunt, if you dont mind hiking to the bottom of the drainages and doing some work. Most of the folks around there roadhunt and spook the elk to the bottom of the drainages and into big timber. There are some real bruisers that wonder out of the Loo-Wit and down into Smith Creek, Bean Creek etc. One thing for sure is if you get one down, be prepared to pack meat all day and night. It can get to be one tiring pack out going in and out of those canyons.

He's sending me a Big Game pamphlet when they get printed and along with the great advice I have received here I hope to be able to get a good hunt setup.

I send for a Michigan elk tag ever year but I have a better chance winning the lottery. Thanks for all the help with this. Hope to share some great moments with you here after the hunt.

They are hunting in the same general area you're talking about, and it might help to give you a perspective at least on what the country looks like. Of course the only problem with watching that video is that it makes it look easy. I think what you don't see is how far they are going in behind locked gates, to get to where the elk are undisturbed and aren't afraid to bugle, and act like elk do when they are in the rut.

Browsing the members list I see that an ASP memeber is also a member here, maybe he can give us a release date?

Yes we do have a website angryspike.com. We do not retail our video, however there is a link to Huntflix that will get you fixed up.

mibowman I recommend a mt. bike if you are looking to hunt on private timber company lands... There is an unlimited amount of logging roads to ride. And that big bull may be just around the next bend....
