He said it was at the look out at granite green mt. Still waiting........
-
Way on top ive seen a bear or two up there.
-
I was using a wounded-rabbit call while sitting on a stump on the down-hill side of a clear-cut. I heard lots of rustling just down-hill of me (really thick stuff) and branches snapping etc. just before a couple of dirt bikes tore onto the scene. This was a clearly marked no vehicle area. Never heard another sound from that spot. :bash: Hittin' it again tomorrow or the next day.
-
For the first time ever I let a legal animal walk. Had him 50 yards out but was just too small :(. Probably a two year old. There was lots of big and little poops so I'll be back looking for daddy tommorow.
-
Thats why they give you 2 bears! Just shoot it and get another tag on the way home.
-
a 2 year old bear is 150-200 lbs plus :dunno: it must have been a yearling, a 75lbder :chuckle: was seen this morning around my house
-
We put the stock on a 3-4 year old boar this afternoon. We had him at 333 yards (400+ without angle calculations) and decided to get closer. Unfortunately by the time we got there, a herd of elk moved into the meadow and pushed the bear out of the meadow into the brush. We never saw him again. We did get a great show from a nice 270+ 6x6 though.

I guess I ment 1 1/2 since mama wasn't around. My first one was a yearling, it weighed about 80lbs. This bear was the same size.
-
Here's link to the video of the elk. It says still processing but should be loaded here in a few minutes. I'm going to bed now.

-
going out tomorrow on jblm only one area open to centerfire will run in for a few hours then grab the bow and head acrossed the river
-
Good first day out...Berries were tore up as I walked into the clearcuts. Gave a couple of calls and seemed to piss off the forest. It was my first attempt at calling and I sure didn't feel like I had a strong backdrop. It took less than 5 minutes before I had something crashing in from behind. Never showed up, but it sure got the blood pumping! The thrills of bear hunting! Back at it this weekend!
-
I'm a little concerned about getting out this weekend. The temps are supposed to be way up. I don't want to knock something down and then have the thing sour on me. I may end up on the water and wait until next week to get out for some evening sits after work.
-
Went out this morning and found a ton of sign. Was sitting on a stump watching a rocky hillside with elderberries and i heard loud crashing coming from the timber on the other side, blood got pumping and was ready for a bear to walk out when out pops a big lone cow elk :bash: let her work out of the area then i went for a little hike, calling for a half hour every so often. Walking through a thick part i kicked a bear out and just got a glimpse. Better luck next time!
-
Opening morning, we busted one bear. My hunting partner can't hunt anymore, long story :'(
-
We went we called in a cougar :yike: we saw deer we pissed off deer NO bears.....YET....tomorrow is a new day and we can try again.
-

Poor mfswallace had a mess in his pants, after he finally saw that cougar at 20 ft.... :yike: :yike: :chuckle: :chuckle: man that one doe was P.O.'d ... stomped off like a little 3 year old having a temper tantrum..... :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Seen 3 yesterday only had a respectable shot at one but I got greedy and tried to get super close because I could not decide if it was a shooter or not. Long story short he winded me at about 80 yards and bolted into the timber. That was when I realized he was a good bear and I should have dumped him. Seen to in alpine country and only 1 down low. Headed out again in the am.
-
Going out now, gonna sit on the stump and watch for a while. Hopefully get that stomper who was tearing up the bushes down the hill and NOT any dirt-bikers.
-
Just got back from hunting no bears but saw a heard of elk which had a nice 5x5 in it and doe with two fawns, but other that nothing! :dunno:
-
Just got back in from the Noocksack unit. Most of the sign I saw was down low around 3500 feet. Sat on a little 50 yard hole with tons of extremely fresh sign. NOTHING. Obviously an evening hole. So I got up and moved higher up the forest service roads. Ended up sitting and glassing a huge clear cut. Right off the bat something in the first hole seemed off. Binos up, and i glass upon a MASSIVE 3x3 blackie. Quartering to me at 180 yds. I mean this blackie would have given some of the midwest whitetails i have watched a run for there money. This fella was HUGE! Trophy for sure. Alas no bear. I continued walking slowly. Ended up in the high alpine stuff with the grassy meadows. No sign up there yet this far north. All the poo I saw was showing still a diet of grass and grubs.
-
I went out today. No luck. One doe. I did find lots of trails along the roads where the grass and brush were beat down where they have been feeding on the berries. I'll it again.

Same here minus the doe. Got to my spot and about an hour into sitting (waiting for it to get a bit darker) the ATV's, Dirt Bikes, and Trucks rolled in. Too close to ORV I guess. I'm gettin' a new spot. Might try this one on a weekday morning in the next few weeks.
Moving on.
-
I had one at 30 yards this afternoon and couldn't get a good shot really bear didn't stick around long :bash:. That's a bear a day so far.
-
Was out from 5am to bout 5pm today....saw tons of sign, lots of food, heard what I believe were two bears...
but no shots...did get a good blister though.
-
...did get a good blister though.
Nice, I didn't even get that :chuckle:
-
I hunted this spring on Vancouver island we saw 21 bear, I stalked 9, passed up 3 small/medium bears, passed one booner with a rifle but wanted one with a bow ended up shooting a nice bear but after five hours of looking gave it up :'(
-
I went out yesterday and just saw bear poop. :(
-
Just got back from base saw a cub and sow. I did find where several bears are running. FYI on base there eating blackberrys.
-
We went we saw deer.....
and I was ATTACKED by a vicious wild animal .....ok so it ran past me a mach 10 and shweeked while trying to steal almonds.....but Chipmonks are dangerous and have red hate filled eyes and attack or nearly attack he almost touched me the freak
...... oh and there are birds that imitate a fighter pilot or a didgeridoo and if they are doing those maneuvers over the meadow and forest you have been calling into well they sound like a bear huffing..... oh and deer get seriously pissed off when they discover they have been tricked....huffy even..... no bears but lots of bear damage....
-
I took my 13 year old cousin on his first bear hunt saturday. It started out as a text book hunt. We walked up the mountain to a clearcut, glassed up a big chocolate had him broadside at 170 yards and set up for the shot. And..... he missed. It was a ton of fun and he had a good time. I think he is hooked on bear hunting now. I really thought i would be posting a pic of a dead bear on here today. Oh well thats the way it goes sometimes.
-
I'm up to 4 bears spotted so far this season.
-
I've came across 4 bear since opening day too... possibly duplicates on different days but saw 2 together in a cut for sure. I have only seen one bear in season before this last week :chuckle: scouting is paying off.
-
8 bear so far this season, only one good shot but was not sure of size so let him walk- well run away! he winded me I think.
-
Gotta buddy at work who's wife called and said that there was a bear in their backyard, she said for me to get a tag and take care of it (looks like I have plans this weekend :IBCOOL: ). She is mad at said bear because it destroyed her bee box that she set up for honey.
-
Runamuk - I had the same experience.... not with the angry chipmunk... those are eating all my bait for the blackies and pissed off when I don't replenish quick enough.
Did have an experience with that damn bird your talking about. At first it was a ways off so I was thinking it was a bear huffing too. Then it flew directly overhead and dive bombed me a few times with that god awful noise, damn near gave me a heart attack the first few times. If they were legal and I had my shotgun it would have been game over for disturbing such a nice evening hunt.
-
been out 3 times, seen three bears, missed a shot on the opener, my hunting partner put one in the dirt today  hopefully the streak continues

8 bears since the season opened??? That is amazing! You must have a very good spot. Hope you get one soon!

they are an amazing bird aerodynamics better than a fighter pilot but will scare the begeezus out of you......and they seem to get some sort of pleasure from it as well

Up to 5 one little tiny guy last night.

Up to 5 one little tiny guy last night.
can i come hunting with you?
-
I had the same experience with that damn bird. A friend of mine did too on another occasion. Sounds like a bear or deer snort!!!!!
-
I have heard that bird to. Had the girlfriend shaking in her boots. She had never bear hunted before and she was freakin! I have seen a baby one they are really wierd looking and nest on the ground. I almost stepped on the chick.
-

do you think the bears you are seeing are all different, or are you seeing the same bears over and over in the same area?
-

its the common nighthawk....I had only seen the darn things on the ground previously......
-
Saw on the news that there are quite a few bears around Gig Harbor, just don't know that area too well and if there is any public land. :dunno:
-
Took my 12 yr old son out saturday and sunday. We saw a bear at 8:40 am sat morning. He was digging around in the timber for about a half hour before he finally walked out into the clear cut.
The anticipation of wether or not he was going to come out gave my kid some serious bear fever. :chuckle: He could'nt seal the deal, missed twice at 200yds.
We saw one on Sunday morning also, but did'nt get a shot. That one came out at about 8:00am. We also could hear one up above us in the timber, but he never showed himself.
I personally was not dissapointed that we came up MT handed. It would have been misery taking care of a bear in that heat.
-
Seen 2 more yesterday. One that was around 150-180 pounds I would guess but I couldnt pull the trigger I let him walk. The second was a giant, I think its the biggest bear I have ever seen in the early season. His neck looked 3 feet long and his ears did not rise above the top of his head. Everything on him seemed huge, I would guess he was 400 or more already. I spotted him at 115 yards but he had me and a friend caught out in the open in a noisy clearcut. Every time I would take a couple steps towards a good rest he would look up at me and I would have to freeze. I finally got to a steady rest but he had fed into the timber right at that time, all I would have been able to take was a head shot back in the timber as thats the last I seen of him but I didnt. It was heartbreaking but I know hes there and will be going back asap!
-
Sorry to hear it 180. You'll get em next time!

Need a hunting partner

Heading over Hwy 20 today, maybe I'll get lucky on the way east and spot one up in the hills. Season isn't open over in the Methow yet. :bash: :bash:
-
Meant to camp up the mountain tonight. Went to grab my tags from my truck before heading up and they were missing. Searched forever and finally decided to go home. On the way home (60 miles) I decided to check again. Found them in the bottom of my dry bag. Really POed at myself!!!!!
-
was gonna go out for this morning before it got hot, but got sick and dizzy instead :bash: :bash: :bash: gonna be even hotter tomorrow may try for weekday mornings when its supposed to be cooler....
-
I went to a new spot today. Saw one very nice 3x4 blacktail with about a 10 inch horn coming out underneath the right beam. It was seperate from the main beam. A spike, 5 does, and 2 fawns with spots. I did finally find some poo but it was dry :bash:
-
Hit the trail at 6:00am and had one in the brush north of me at 6:14am...thing woudn't come out and play and it was WAY too thick for me to feel much like going in after it. I figured I had the day ahead of me. Hiked in a couple of miles, heard two more (think they were not the same bear), and saw a Sow with cubs at the bottom of the gulch. We ended up hiking a game-trail through timber and started hearing branches pop up ahead...stalked as quiet as we could, wind to our nose, and came pretty close to the sound before it disappeared. No confirmation but did see movement before it ducked off the trail. Started calling when we were taking a break on the other side of the mountain descending into a small clear-cut valley w/ a stream. Distressed Fawn call brought in a Doe and her fawn, but that was it. She was a pretty good size too. I was doubting whether or not my call was effective until I pulled her up out of the gulch to within 50 yards (up-wind). VERY COOL! Stopped at Wholesale Sports and picked up a couple more calls, a Mouse Squeaker and a Wounded Rabbit. I'll be driving out there as far as I can get and hike back to that spot for dusk. If I'm not successful I'll sleep in the truck and hit that spot again in the morning. Found TONS of scat and stumps torn to shreds as high as 8 - 10' up. Very hopeful that I can pull one out tonight or tomorrow morning. I don't want to be out there when tomorrow's heat sets in.
-
Day off tommorow! Headed out in am to try a new spot. Hopefully find more sign.
-
I took my son out with his brand new license to where I saw lots of bear sign last year. This year the road in was in much better repair and the logging crews were active. They were not in the area we were headed to so we hunted it anyway. There were lots of berries but not the sign from last year. Alternated between still hunting and calling with no success on bears. We did spot one coyote which got my son all excited but we couldn't get him ready and on target in the time it takes a dog to disappear.
We did spot a gathering of vultures along the power lines and found a stinking dead bear, mostly picked over.
He was happy with his first day hunting but we are still looking.

Are you hunting around the area your profile says or somewhere else? Had one a week ago shot had lots of blood on the trail, tracked it for almost a mile into a swamp, lost trail at about 1030 the next morning but it was so hot already and we were crawling through the crap trying to pick up any sign, we just had to give up. :bash:
-
We were not near home. We were over the pass along I 90.
-
i went out Friday morning on base and saw 3. this time there where no cubs 1 looked to be a shooter i just couldn't get him in range i stalked him to just over 90 yards before he walked into the wood and i lost him :bash: :bash: tomorrow is a new day and i will be back on them
-
Sat on one for 2 hours last night and watched it slowly feed around in some thick reprod never could get a clear few of the bear just bits and pieces. He would pop out for a second than gone again for 20 minutes or so. :bash:. Waited until 845 to get a look at him but darkness came first.
-
Same spot? Up the hill where you mentioned heading out?
-
Yep close to the same spot.
-
I coudn't get him on camera (cell phone) at some 400yds in/out of the trees/meadow, but I did stumble into his morning dump. Good bear eating grass. Field judged him to be well above 6' square, +300 pounds is very conservative. Very small ears.. Actually had trouble seeing his ears in the binos. -Somewhere north of Mazama... :chuckle:
-
Sure is some pretty country. By the way....you dropped your pistol and it almost landed in a big pile of poop.
-
Mazama opens on the 15th, right !!
-

or he stumbled on one of those infamous pistol poopin bears, that are nearly as elusive as the hundred dollar bill poopin bears and knife poopin bears :chuckle: :chuckle:
I went out yesterday in a half assed attempt its been a little warm ....ended up just playing in the creek/river :dunno: if I hadn't taken the rifle I am sure I would have seen a bear :chuckle: hey but I did see some chick skinny dipping (other than myself) she must not have realized other people would walk that far back and farther on the trail :chuckle: she seemed to think the tiny patch of trees had her hidden :dunno:
today back to organizing this disaster of a house then maybe tomorrow or wed morning head back out and try again :dunno:
-
Mazama opens on the 15th, right !!
Yea, can't wait till eastside (methow) opens.
I was over in the Methow this weekend. Too damn hot to do any huntin anyway. Supposed to cool off this next week (85 instead of 100)

It must be a big bear, it ate the last hunter.

Yeah... The stools smelled like pepper spray, but I couldn't see any little bells.
:chuckle:
I actually took the photo to prove to the wife that bears do actually crap in the woods. She seems to think they only crap in the middle of the road.

-
You know boys and girls, the bears are moving around when it's in the 90's. I asked the postman today and he's been seeing them at 1 in the afternoon. :dunno: I've shot at them when it's that hot outside, missed of course, with my single shot Encore 450 Marlin handgun. Couldn't hear for a week, dumba$$ !!!
-
Up to 5 one little tiny guy last night.
D-Rock, until I see pic's, those bears don't exist! :chuckle: I've been rehabbing the ankle and it feels pretty good. I'm hoping to do my first hike real soon.

well so far they haven't been moving when I am out there :bash: :bash: and when it creeps up to 90 I sorta have to stop moving around....

They actually use rabbits to wipe since the poo won't stick to their fur. :chuckle:
-
My latest report is 20 bears have been seen around the Curlew area with one cougar 2 days ago on Boulder Pass at 8:30 pm. :)
