I would guess that most assault rifles would be too small of a caliber to be very effictive for killing bears.......hence the need for 10 shots. It is the shooters fault for choosing too small of a caliber and probably poor bullets as well.I don't know much about assault rifles, but can't you get them in .308?

Sure, 30/06 too, and 338 Win Mag, in a Browning BAR or Remington 742. That is if you choose to call those rifles assault rifles. They're semi-autos so I suppose they meet the definition.

DPSM has an AR type that comes in .243 and .308. I am sure others do as well. Not the gun, the shooter that is the problem here.
Also, 7.62x39 which is ballistically very similar to the 30-30 which some will argue is a good bear round for the *typical* Washington Black bear--within reason/range.
7.62x54r is another that can be found in some AK variants...ballistically very similar to the .308.

Yeah, either do I. At least I'm not quite sure what exactly constitues an "assault rifle."
