Grundy don't kid yourself, that is a nice buck! Blacktails are hard to come by, especially big ones. You can buy a nice white tail or mulie if you have the time and money. Blacktails have to be earned!

-
thinks for the replys nice bucks guys! :) :)

I like this thread. It's good to see some true blackies round my parts like that. I've seen a few but haven't sealed the deal on a big one. I started archery hunting 2 years ago and I can't get my mind off a big blacktail. Although they look the most *censored* and majestic with their gray winter coats, swellt necks, and dark horns, I'll be happy to stick one this september all velvety with a bright summer coat. This is the buck I've been getting pics of, 4x3 w eyegaurds, maybe 4x4 by september :dunno:

 great pic BTKR. Looks like you ran him down and wrestled him to death.
Damn near did. I only weighed about 135 lbs and he field dressed over 200 lbs. The story is on here somewhere, but basically after he was down he nearly kicked my brother and then came at me, head down and hooves up. I shot him in the neck from the hip with a 30.30 as he came over a downed tree only a short barrels length away.
BTKR that is one knarly a$$ buck
He was bigger (and had an extra point) the year before. But he still couldn't get his rack around a tree any bigger than your wrist.

This buck was shot in 1925ish in eatonville washington by my Great Uncle. When I had it scored 7 or 8 years ago it was number 4 in the world @ 171" but I know it has gone down in the last few years but I do believe it is still in the top ten. I would like to put a new cape on it one of these days.

I had it at the yakima sportsmans show a while back and then I took it down the following year to Portland because a b&c scorer (lost his card and can't remember his name) down there was doing a book on blacktails and wanted to have it rescored. He called me a couple years ago when b&c made a nontypical classification for blacktails and he wanted to officially score it as a nontypical because it would have been the new world record. My grandfather still has it so I can't do much with it and he doesn't want to recape it for some reason. Not too bad looking for a 87yr old mount though! My grandpa said when they down size to a smaller house in a few years then I can have it. You can bet you will be getting a call from me when that happens!
-
BLRman, you look real familiar and now i know where i have seen that piture of you it is in boyd iversons blacktail book that he wrote or in one of those blacktail books, but i think its iversons i will have to go home and dig it out, that is a stud buck for sure. congrats

Nice bucks everyone!!!

I cannot for the life of me remember the guys name that scored that buck but I did send him some pictures and info for a book on blacktails he was doing so ya that is where you probably saw it! I will get some better pics one of these days and get them on here. I can't even describe the mass on that thing. Whats really scary is he has over 10 inches of deductions or something close to it.

what time of year did you whack that pig, it looks like the same stuff i hunt, as all blacktail hunters hunt i should say, you got to tell the story, i love blacktails that people get when they hunt them in their domain, i aint taking anything away from the guys that catch a stud in a clearcut, but it is totally differant gettin a big hog in the brush, so cough it up BLRman whats the story

Thanks Turner. It was the buck of my dreams for sure. It was not I was expecting to see that day especially at 11:30am, but that it is the rut for you. Hopefully I can keep myself outta that spot this year so I don't blow my late Alta muzzy tag that I drew. :chuckle:

its to fricken bad that tools like that are blessed with such a big ass blacktail, for those of us that hunt blacktail, with the blood and sweat know that bucks like that are rare, and this shed drives down the fricken road and shoots one with his bow and light and *censored* huntn shirt. gotta be an island deer right.... :dunno:
-
Now that this flashlight buck has taken this great thread way off track... could we get back on topic. This is probably my favorite thread. I would hate to see it ruined. Too many good threads on here get ruined by people wanting an easy laugh or trying to stir the pot.... I'll climb off my stump now, sorry :chuckle:...

-
yeah its to dang bad kids get all excited when they see a buck :dunno: This buck was with my sons buck the day he shot his buck . But unfortunately for us my sons buck was standing in the clearcut feeding at about 150 yrds and when my son shot his buck it dropped like a rock and we were jumping around all excited about it when I looked up the hill and watched this one jump out of his bed and take off up the hill and he stopped and just looked at us ....wth :bash: :bash: So I took my buddy in there and he was standing about 100 yrds on the timberline and the rest was history :chuckle: but it is one I never will forget ...and another thing that makes my wife peesed about it was I was going to buy her a tag this year and take her but I did not ...So this year I promised her she is going hunting ...She has shot a couple deer ..one with her .243 and 2 with her bow ...she just kinda quit going once the boys were old enough to go ..now my boys are old enough to go on their own , its time for her to start dropping some !!! Can not wait for this year to come already

Here is a couple more ...

Love this thread on blacktail ghost! These are our deer, the first is my daughters youth deer from the greenriver watershed (camera shy). The second is my biggest, from Hancock 117'' last year late buck. And the last one is a buck that I missed with my .30-06 Thompson center pistol, then went back and found his antlers after the season. Couldn't believe I found them, was sick that I missed him at the time but finding his antlers helped heal the pain.
-
You have some very nice bucks there!!
-
Thanks, they (blacktails) are the hardest thing to hunt, big one's anyway. It took me many years to get one that big, my daughters was the best memory. She had the youth tag and my dad had the disabled doe tag at the same time. He shot the doe that was with her buck, unforgettable for all of us that was there.
-
Yea they don't call them timber ghosts for nothing. Put in for that Green River tag several years back when it was better.
-
Yea they don't call them timber ghosts for nothing. Put in for that Green River tag several years back when it was better.
3 years ago a youth hunter took a 140 or 150 class buck and the same year the muck's took a 150 class deer, I wonder if it's getting better in there since the mucks are somewhat in control of what they harvest in the shed now. I put in for it every year, nothing like a big blackie.
-
first buck ever, first bow kill ever, addicted for life , very grateful, not as big as some of the studs posted on here but hey jack! i was more then satisfied 8)
-
Nice buck man!

Nice basket. I'd like to see him mix with a muley doe and see what comes up.

when his horns were green you could stick 4 fingers inbetween his rack now you can not get 2 in there. I scored him after he had his drying period and if I did it right he scores 115 5/8 pope and young. That is if I did it right I don't normaly even try to score horns.
