Title: Youth hunter looking for first deer
Post by: mr user on August 09, 2012, 10:01:55 PM
Hi all,
I am 15 and looking for my first deer.  I have tried to get out in the past but it hasn't worked out.  I am relatively new to hunting with both my parents being non-hunters.  As far as deer hunting, I have no experience.  I live in the renton area but am constantly over in grays harbor.  I really just need to get out there for the first time and learn how it is done.  I would also be open to other Big Game opportunities. I can pay for gas and a meal or two along the way as well!

Hang in there  I know that it is hard to get into hunting when you are young, especially when your parents don't hunt. Just hang in there, even if opportunities don't show up this year. What season do you plan to hunt (archery, mod. fire. muzzy)  :dunno: Getting a hunting buddy is a great start, and I wish I could help.

Nope.  Not until next year.

Get your learners permit asap

Gray's Harbor County is chock full of deer and elk.  Just have to find them.  I hope someone can take you along.  From reading some of your past posts, it looked like you tried but kind of got screwed being able to hunt last year.  I hope it works out better for you this year.

If you are ever near Arlington I could try to get you a bear, but that is a ways from you. Send me a pm if you ever are and we could possibly hook up

I don't hunt there but, I know there has to be a ton of deer up on Tiger Mountain.  Can any of you guys point this young man in that direction?  Tiger Mnt. and Cougar Mnt. are within spitting distance of Renton.

Yeah.  I actually was planning on hunting doe with Bearpaw up in colville in october, but that got canceled because of some events in the family that made me not be able to get there.  And for the last couple years I was trying to get somewhere over east to hunt deer but none of that worked out either.  Being the only hunter in the family (that lives in washintgon) I've had to try hard to start from scratch and find my own opportunities and learn on my own!  I'm more determined than ever this year though and will be until i actually get out there!

And Kola, I actually may be up near arlington in the next few weeks for soccer.  I don't know If I would be able to go bear hunting with you, but it's definetly a possibility and I'll talk to my parents and try to persuade them!

I know of the areas on the opposite side HWY 18 from Tiger mountain, and have looked at it a lot on maps and been up to the gates.  Its not so much the finding a deer part of hunting that I'm worried about.  its more the part that Im worried if I do shoot something that I'll be overwhelmed and not know what to do, potentially ruining the meat.

If you could get a ride to Dale's in Oct., and Dale was still on board, would you be able to make the trip?
Title: Re: Youth hunter looking for first deer
Post by: mr user on August 09, 2012, 11:12:18 PM
Yeah, I probably could.  I would just have to talk to my parents about it for approval.

You ask your parents and let me see what I can put together.  If Dale still has a youth spot together, we'll get you there and home with your deer.

There is a very slight chance that I could get him there, and back, but that is slight so take it for what it is (to Dale's). Very slight. Oh, and I am sorry that you play soccer, I would rather go watch golf (less acting) :chuckle: Besides that, if you do come up to Arlington, it would have to be after the 16th of this month for bear for me.

If Dale can get him in towards the end of the youth week, around the 19th or 20th, and we can get him there, I can get him home.  I have a full truck going over the first part of the week but the kids are going home before me and I'm staying until the 19th or 20th

Hell, I could even give him butchering lessons

We leave tommorow anyway, and I won't be getting back until the 20th.  And about getting me to Dales, I think I'd feel really guilty about someone doing all that for me.  And Golf!  I can't watch it, but that's probably because I'd be lucky to break 120  :chuckle:  And I can't watch pro soccer either, to much ego and those guys get touched and "break their leg" before getting right back up and acting like nothing happened  :chuckle:

And if you could get me home, I can probably persuade my mom or someone else to get me over there.

I am going over there with a Honda Civic. I may be loaded pretty heavy, so I don't know how that will turn out. If you were to bring him back, that would be a little better. I may be carpooling with another friend though, and if I do that, then it would be tough. He only has a civic also  :chuckle:  :dunno: It all depends, and I would hate to get his hopes up high for nothing.

I PM'd Dale.  We'll see what he says.  I can definitely get him home that weekend with no problem.  And if Dale shows him how to gut, and I show him how to butcher, he should be all set going forward.

I've got the return trip home covered and I'm sure with 11,000+ members, someone else has to be going over the same time frame.  If not, I'll see what I can do.  I have a couple of fall back positions if we can't get him a ride from his mom or another member

Follow the how to bone out a deer tutorial on the deer hunting page. I did and it was fairly simple with no trips to the butcher  :IBCOOL:

We've had a housefull of relatives all week. Was playing poker till late-late.  :chuckle:

Here's my post in the other topic:

The youth hunt is Oct 19-22 here, so if someone could help him get here and back home, we'll take him while he is here. There is a shuttle that runs from Spokane to Colville, he could ride that from Spokane to Colville and back for about $40 or $50.

How much school are they willing to let you take off?

I was hoping to head that way the 16th or 17th.  But I could go as late as early on the 18th.  I've got a place in Elk but I think I can get you Colville.

I would need signed approval from your folks and I'd like to meet you and them before we go.

I can only take the 19th off.  I'm taking some extremely hard classes and really can't afford to miss much school, or I'll get .  My mom said she would be willing to take me up on the 19th and then I can go home with DoubleJ.

User......

If you feel so inclined PM me your mailing address and full name. I have a $25 Cabelas gift card I would like to contribute to your hunt. Use it for some last minute deer slaying gizmo that you may find yourself in need of. No strings attached.

And if you never have time to go to Cabela's yourself, you can order it and have it shipped to the store (free in store pick up), and I will pick it up and deliver it to Dale's for your hunt. It is complex, but atleast we have a back-up plan  :chuckle:

I agree.  If we could get a sub forum linked to the youth forum started, I have some connections I could even get adds into the media and maybe we could get a few kids like Mr User where nobody in the family hunts but they want to try.  No better way to turn anti hunters into pro hunters than to take them hunting or, at least take their kids hunting :chuckle:

I'd be willing to take a youth pheasant and or quail hunting in the basin. I have a good dog and some great spots that hold birds. I can't seem to get my step-daughter interested, so I'm sure willing to teach someone who is. I've even got spare shotguns and ammo if needed.

I think a mentor program is a fantastic Idea!  I know the WDFW does a youth-mentor duck hunt in september, but thats the only Mentor hunt I've seen.  And I would like to thank everybody whose helping me to get out deer hunting!

I think it is great to have offers like that. I think it is also very wise to follow the examples set in this thread. Meet the parents, get some "permission" slips, that kind of thing.

That is too bad, was it the young hunter's decision to not go through with it, maybe school conflict?

Maybe things will work out for it to come together next year.  Seemed like there was quite a bit of interest in getting the youngster into the woods.  It would be great to see the average hunter age start trending down.

I know when I took my daughter through hunter safety last year they were real happy to see all the youth signed up and even happier with all the females in the class.  They like female hunters because apparently statisticly women vote more than men so they want female sportsman to understand the facts about hunting and be informed when voting.

Not my decision not to go through with it.  It ended up that a parent was not able to stay with me for the weekend.

Bummer, maybe it will work out for next year.  Sounds like you have some great offers, I hope it all comes together for you.  Being out there is a great experience and I am sure it is tough when your family isn't into it.  Good luck.
