I'm going out with my elk buddy again this fall. The way we've agreed to do it is that if one of us gets an elk, that hunter keeps the trophy, but we'll split the meat. One elk is way too much for either of our family. Just wondering if this is the modus operandi, or if people normally keep everything--hunting buddies be darned.
-
The best way to do it is to split the meat and cut the skull plate in half and each gets 1 antler. You could even have a half shoulder mount done! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
My hunting buddy is my husband so you know ALL trophys are mine and of corse I get half :lol4: I am kidding !!!!!!!!! :P I think if ya kill it the trophy is yours if all the hunt up till that has been equal then you should share the meat
-
Generally my only other partner is Idabooner and he can have as much meat as he wants or can eat that his wife won't give away. :) I then keep his antlers and mine. :chuckle:
This year with three elk tags, and providing I am successful on them, I will probably fill the freezer, give him any that he wants. The rest may just go to a big barbecue or to a needy family, or whomever helps me pack the damn thing out.

You know that could be cool :) Split it strait down the middle nose to tail then do a full (half) body mount and hang flat side to wall !!!!!!
-
For elk, whoever shoots it keeps the antlers, shooter gets half then the other half is split up between packers that help.

Pack is empty right now, but man it can hold alot..... Alittle out of the way, but then it is elk... If you need help :chuckle: :chuckle: Course I would have to load my pack, especially after hearing about your pack weight :yike: when you were up north, still insane? :chuckle:

:yeah:
I'll help you pack them out (schedule depending, of course). PM me if you're serious for help.

I like the sound of this. Its simple enough with two hunters, but my buddy and I might be adding on a few this year. In this particular example, I take it that if a deer dressed out at 100lbs, and there were a total of five hunters, the shooter would get half, and the remaining four would split 25%... so the divison would be 50 * 12.5 * 12.5 *12.5 * 12.5.
I assume that agreement would be in effect only when the hunters are present. So if one hunts with us for a week of deer season, but then misses all of next week during elk season, and we get an elk, that hunter ain't gettin' squat.

Ditto!
If I am hunting alone I usually keep half or a quarter and donate the rest to friends who didnt get and animal or are in need of meat.

Pretty darn close.
But we only play that way with elk. Deer and bear go to the shooter but everyone helps Normally everyone in our group will get a deer so that meat is not a problem, but it is nice to have extra packers or draggers.
Now elk is shooter gets half. Two people split equally, three people then the other two help equally and split half, etc.

Exactly Willy!

Thats about how we do it but my brother is a bachelor and he has no kids so I usually get a little more cause he doesn't want it. :IBCOOL:
I have helped guys who don't split anything, bothered me for a while but then I figured if I got an elk with them I'll play by the same rules.

Dad, my three brothers and myself...all split the meat..
Been living off of elk/deer/bear since last year...and it just seems like we havent even dented it at all.
We need to get another chest freezer before archery elk, I am sure.
-
If I get help packing something out I will share...
-
In general, my family as well as the few buddies I can stand to hunt with pretty much hold firmly to fart rules.
Ya know, "He who smelt it, delt it!" ???
Same theory, only "He who "caught" it, keeps it!"
It's just expected that if you see the animal, and choose to take it...it is YOURS.
As far as seeing an animal--he who saw it first has first dibs. If there are multiple others in the part who desire that animal, and the one who saw it passes, it's paper rock scissors or we play the guilt game!
The same is true when we're fishing (where our phrase originally came about).
There is no expectation to share anything, other than memories.
Now, if one of your buddies ends up skunked, or loses a rod, or has to pack half your animal out 5 miles...there is an optional gratuity, which usually comes in the form of a bottle of Crown Royal, or some nice backstraps, or more often than not a big BBQ where we can give them hell all afternoon. ;)

That is the way we do it too.
-
dave usually covers filling up the yukon's gas tank so a lot of meat goes to his freezer
-
There are 4 of us that all hunt together. Whoever, KILLS the animal gets the horns, then all the meat is distributed evenly among everyone. We make the distinction of who kills the animal, due to a dispute with some "family" member, a few years back, that said he shot that bull. He sure did, right in the a$$. He never saw the elk again, until my brother put it down for good, almost a mile away, and 3 hrs. later. The "family" member, no longer hunts with us, even though he asks every year. Just do not want the squabbles. Been smooth sailing ever since.
-
It is more enjoyable and usually successful to work as a team. Most of the time I am hunting I am trying to get someone else the shot.
-
The way we do it is that the shooter keeps the trophy and then the meat is divided up equally between the hunting party. We almost always all get deer, so we keep our own deer, but elk and moose are divided up equally amongest the party.

Haven't done party hunting??? Anyhow, same as most, shooter takes horns, split meat with buddy. Exceptions are as follows: Tenderlions- Shooter, more important than the stinking antlers or horns....
-
Im GREEDY! If I shoot it-it all goes home (or to the butcher should i say) with me!
(Of course i will share once its been proccessed to friends).
-
I went with split the meat, but for the past several seasons, it has been either both kill, or no kill. Most of my friends are stone-cold killers, nobody ever seems to be out of meat; last time I had an empty freezer was 1989. If that happened, sharing wouldn't be an issue for any of us.
-
I usually just hunt with my Brothers and Dad, and the Kids, so the meat is split, If your with me when i get a Bull I give you one of the Ivories.
-
I hunted with my buddy this last archery elk season in the wilderness 3.5 miles deep. without him the meat would have spoiled, shared it with him. how could you not?
-
We've had as many as eleven guys in our elk camp. Mostly though it's about eight. After mid week it might be four or five. Here's what we do. Shooter takes half the elk. The rest is shared between the rest. We all agree. No fuss, no muss. For deer, if you shot it and I help pack... just give me a package or two of steaks.
-
Usually keep the meat for myself, since I hunt alone, but the land owner will get backstrap and tenderloins at least once a month during hunting season.
-
sometimes, but not all the time
-
I usually keep it all then hand the meat out as I see fit. I never eat an entire elk so I usually end up giving out about half.
-
Killer gets the rack and then the meat is split between the guys who helped pack him out.
-
Keep the horns and split the meat. I've on a couple occassions given my buddy all/most the meat.
-
I don't have a problem giving away some meat. Especially if I get some help packing it out, but don't expect half just because you helped me drag it out.
And I won't tolerate someone showing up at deer camp expecting half of someones animal. Just because we're all in camp together doesn't mean we all go home with meat.
If you really look around camp there are a few guys who never get animals and never put as much work into helping pack an animal out.
Just my personal feelings and observations.
-
I hunt with a large group and we all get meat - whether we all tag out or just a few. Trophy goes to the guy on the trigger.
-
You know I have never asked any of my hunting buddies about this, I should next year.
My personall opinion is shooter gets rack and hide. and some should be given to those who help pack it out. Now if I can pack it all out myself I will still probably give some to my buddies cuz I'm such a nice guy. Regardless I'll have to deal with the misses for giving any meat away.
-
I bring it up before the hunt how they want to do it.Usally split it with those that hunt including the cost for cut and wrap.I had a problem once a guy wanted the meat but didnt feel he should split the cost, he didnt get any meat and didnt get to hunt with us again
-
Just so you know Gobble Gobble, what you can carry out is what you get! But if you came up empty at the end of the season I would still give you some of what ever I shot.

I think its fare. It never did occur to me to ask about it when we were out.
-
Who voted that they keep the trophy and I get the meat? We leave on the day before the opener. 8)
-
My hunting pards and I have always split elk meat between us, the shooter keeps the trophy. Deer, the shooter keeps the whole thing.
-
For elk, whoever shoots it keeps the antlers, shooter gets half then the other half is split up between packers that help.
that is how we tend to do it...if there is more than one elk then its more of a "keep the antlers and the meat is divided in half then with N+1 shares...N being the number hunters, packers etc with the shooter getting antlers, half and 2 shares, the others get one share for the animals they help with...
-
I keep it all and then will give some to those who have helped but pretty much never had anyone but my dad help me so thats the only person who has received meat form me LOL.........now I ve helped others and appreciated them giving me meat.......especially the ones that i take hunting!!
-
We normally split meat among the people who help drag the damn thing out. I have had the opportunity to pull one elk out whole all the others have been quartered and packed out. Whomever puts a pack on their back to help will get a piece of the pie.
that is the way we ROLL :brew:
-
Elk, shooter gets antler then split the meat, deer since there's usually ten to twelve guys at camp each keep his own But the following year we'll bring up our jarky and sausage or whatever for everyone to eat. One year I wheeled th BBQ over to the tree he hung from and threw the Backstrap right on the grill......Nothing better than never forzen backstrap and tenderlions :brew:
