Title: Bear down.
Post by: Mandownitis on August 19, 2012, 03:24:31 PM
Got this boar Friday morning.  My buddy and I then had a pack job.  5 hours later he was in the cooler.  Lot of work but worth it.

Bow45,  Yup the berries a were ripe at about 4000 feet.  This year looks like a great year to pick some berries.  I am going to be up with the family next weekend and hope to get a bunch for a pies, muffins and pancakes.

Sorry I didn't include a story with the pictures.  I was pretty busy and pooped when I got home last night.

My buddy and I went up the Packwood unit Thursday evening.  Set up camp and enjoyed a nice evening at about 3,500 feet.  Went to bed about 10.  Got up at 5 and had sausage and eggs.  A little after 6 we headed up on separate trails.  We decided to turn our radios on at 10 to check in.  I started up the trail and saw some bear tracks in the sand about a mile in.  I continued up the trail for another half mile and decided to make my way up into a berry patch.  Saw lots of deer tracks on the hill but not much else.  Found some ripe berries and enjoyed a few sweet ones as a snack.  I found some shade and sat down so I could glass a hillside for a while.  At 10 I turned the radio on and talked to my buddy.  He was at the trailer doing dishes at the trailer.  I told him it would be better than an hour before I would be heading back.  So I worked my way down to the trail.  Not long after I got back on the trail I spotted the bear across a small ravine.  It was down getting a drink in the creek.  I pulled up my rifle and decided it looked like a shooter.  He was in a clump of brush so I had to wait for him to step away into the open.  He finally moved into a clearing and I took a shot.  I could tell he was hit and he rolled into a brush pile.  I could see branches moving so I kept an eye on him.  I put another round in the chamber and waited.  After about 20 seconds he crawled out and started walking along the top of the ravine.  I shot again and the bear ran another 50 yards and toppled over out of site.  I heard him let out a roar,  so I figured he was done.  I crossed the creek and went looking for the bear.  When I found him I let out a victory roar.  Then I called my buddy and told him to bring the pack boards.  I worked on gutting and skinning while he came up the trail.  He got to me about an hour later and we strapped up the hide and head on one frame and the front shoulders on another.  Got back to the truck and put the bear into the cooler on ice.  Another trip up the hill for the rest of the meat.

We were both pretty tired that evening.  But very pleased.

Dude, start a thread.. you know how many guys would come if you called??  I am on the Eastside, but I know of several guys in the Olympia/Shelton/Elma area, that would drop whatever, and come help pack out a bear....   Some of the most prolific bear hunters on the forum are right there in your area...
