Totally agree. Myself, I would pass on that one. Plenty out there bigger but you know what they say.....a bird in the hand.......
Need to give it a few more years and another 150 lbs.
-
Shooter for me. Nice healthy no cub having boo boo.
-
Big enough.
-
Big enough.
:yeah: I'm no expert, by any means. Doesn't look small but doesn't look big either. Still a shooter for me.
Is it a boar or a sow? I can't tell, some of you probably can
-
140-160 ish. pretty, average bear.
-

Id say thats probably being generous. More like 110lbs. Notice the size of the balsam root in front and around it. Juvenile bear.
-
Two bear limit, so....
:mgun:
Then head west for a biggin'
-
Looks to be about 150 ish.
-
I agree, younger bear. If you don't have a rug, shoot it! If you have one, let him grow up some more. I saw a similar sized bear a month ago up by Mount Bonaparte when I was there. He was sniffing around my cabin lot.
-
Yup, nice first tag bear. Then get picky! :twocents:
-
:yeah:
-
Shoot it... One less bear in the woods....
-
Young bear 110 range.
-
Small bear for sure, I would bet 100-120lbs.
-
Well I dont think its going to be my first bear, but my buddy really wants it so I am going to let him have a shot. were going out tonight a couple of rookies on their first bear hunt :chuckle:. Thanks for all the input guys
-
Young, but beautiful coat.
-
Looks pretty small to me. Wait its a grizz!!! Lol.
-
160lbs alive kill em anyway they eat more fawns than people think
-
well did you get it? :dunno:

Gutpile is excellent and an expert when it comes to guessing bear size. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Well my buddy got his first bear!!! he'll be working on it for awhile skinning it he is going to get a rug done
-
the tongue is not very pleasent sorry about that! but it was dark and hard to get the camera to focus much less see how the picture was turning out
-
photo shop
-
Hell ya bud ...thats sweet you guys got him ...nothen wrong that bear and it may push 150 ...kinda hard to tell from the picture but he looks a little fatter than I thought ...if its the same bear ....good job !
-
 congrats to you and your buddy!
-
thanks it was a pretty hot evening and frankly I thought it was going to be a waste of time. But at the request of my buddy we went and started cooking about five thirty about seven or a little after I seen the bear come out 800 yards across the canyon from me and two draws down from where Billy was sitting. I couldnt get ahold of him on the phone he had it off but it didnt matter the bear meandered uphill feeding on service berrys and bushes untill he came level with my buddy who took about a 250-300 yard shot. I dont know how heavy the bear is or how big still cuz dont got nothing to compare to. but the 50-60 yards we had to drag him uphill to get to the dolly was TOUGH! after that it was easy cheesy. I thought his coat looked pretty thick for how hot it has been and the bear seemed fairly heavy. I sweated a ton getting the bear out. Now I am excited about going hunting for my own bear! I think I might wait till its cooler
-
Congrats to your buddy. I don't know if that is the same bear. The one your buddy killed looks like its got more of a square head and a darker muzzle and face. I also think its a better bear then the first one. I would guess 150-160 on that bear. Not the best pic's for guessing.
-
i would shoot him. probably around the 150 160 mark.

I was thinking the same thing, first bear pics the muzzle looks lighter than the successful set of pics.
But either way, congratulations, any first bear is a trophy!!
-
Yep I would say different bear also first bear had tan muzzle.
-
Bang!, :IBCOOL:
-
Yep I would say different bear also first bear had tan muzzle.
:yeah: Either way, congrats to your bud!
-
Congratulations on the great bear. It does look like a different bear from the first one based on muzzle color. Go back and shoot the other one just to be sure.
-
Way to go man. You got'em. ..
-
I guarantee that bear weighs more than 150. I packed out a 165lb bear 2 weeks ago that wasnt that big.
-
I agree with others, looks like a different bear. Congrats to your friend!
-
Congrats.

:chuckle: When most people see a bear it is almost always a 300 pounder ...Hard to tell from that picture but it is not over 170 ...that I do know ...another thing I will point out is the bears on the eastside seem to grow bigger and over on the wetside the average bear is around 200 lbs .. thats just fact ...when you get one pushing 300 then you have a trophy ... :twocents:  Thats a nice bear and I would of whacked it .... Never was a trophy hunter and never will be .... meat in my freezer is all I care about :chuckle: 8)
-
What does that bear measure from nose to his butt ?? Did you guys measure it ? the best way is to measure it while it is not skinned by placing a tape on his nose and measuring to the base of his tail ...thats the true way of getting the exact measurement ....most guys skin them them lay it flat and stretch the sheet out of it then say all I got me a 7 footer :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :bdid: :twocents:

So your typical eastside mountain bear is bigger than your typical west side coastal bear? I'd have to disagree.
-
well we didnt measure him and we didnt weigh him...dumb rookies...and obviously we didnt even know how to hang a bear :chuckle:. But my buddy did get him skinned fairly quick and boned him out this morning. I dont know if its the same bear or not but you can see in this picture he does have the brown nose as in the first pictures and he came out just one draw (maybe 500 yds or less) from where we had seen the first bear. that being said there was alot of bear sign all over and I dont know if normally a boar runs with others. In some of the pictures it looks like the bears tail is almost to the floor of the shop and so just guessing if you turned its head staight up it would be about what 5 feet? maybe just a hair over.

I appreciate everyones heckling and input on this site! Its always nice to see the members of this site and their success and hard work they put into getting their animals and sharing their experiences. and the mostly friendly bantering that goes on  Thanks everyone I look forward to seeing some bears and hopefully getting one of my own to post up here.
-
Nice! My buddy and I endured the heat this weekend in search of a bear but it didn't happen. Did run into tons of berries though. Good job!

Oh I don't think anyone is giving you to much crap :chuckle: Its a very nice bear for sure. Bear's are a funny critter to judge. I will always post a lot lower weight on my bears because I feel I have to tip the scale. 90% of people way way over guess the weight of a bear. They are big a bulky and hard to deal with. Which makes them a pain to pack :chuckle: I have seen more people kill 150lb bears and call it 250-300lbs then I ever care to talk about. If your guess is around 5' or so, I would still stick with 150-170lbs.
The point is it's all just bear talk. We are all happy you whacked it and one less fawn killer running around!!!

I a disagree as well, i know the record came from easten wa as far as skull size. But i think the west side of the pct has more big bears then eastside of it :twocents:
-
Congrats on the bear. :)
-
Seeing the bear hanging he looks pretty big to me!
-
Congrats.

Looks like a good bear to me. Thanks for posting your story and your buddy's success. Don't mind the bear judging experts on this site, as everybody seems to under judge others and over judge theirs. ;)
-
True that last post!! I've done it more than once myself.
-
Great job. That's awesome that you got some live pics of him then went back and found him again.

I agree with what everyone is saying about how easily bears are over-judged on their size. I'm not experienced at sizing bears so when my cousin shot a 6' bear a few years back and I would have SWORN it was 300+ lbs when we were in the woods. We weighed the hide/head/paws at about 47 lbs and it was 145 lbs hanging meat at the butcher.. + guts = ~220 total. Good bear but nowhere near 300 lbs.
