Title: New to State
Post by: Camohunter20 on August 23, 2012, 03:43:17 PM
Hello Everyone,

I just moved up to Spokane area about 3 months ago from Nebraska. I am an avid bowhunter, duck/goose hunter, pheasant hunter, and by the nature of my surroundings I plan on being an elk hunter. I have talked with a few guys here and there about hunting and it seems to be a lot tighter on the laws/rules in the state of Washington compared to Nebraska. Is there anything anyone would like to pass along that I may need to know about making this transition into this sportsmans paradise up here? Also I have always and only hunted from a treestand, and 95% of everyone I talk to says they stalk animals around here. Is stand hunting good to do in this state or am I going to have to get used to stalking and chasing deer? Thanks for any input I appreciate it and look forward to indulging in what Washington has to offer

Welcome to WA.  Not sure who you are talking too.  But, lots of good whitetail hunting just north of Spokane, and everyone I know uses a tree stand during archery season.  I also hunt the eastside (i.e., east of Cascade Mtns), and hunt elk from a tree stand w/my bow.  Lots of guys still use spot and stalk, but I find it is much more effective to hunt from tree stand here in WA.

Welcome and there are lots of folks that hunt from a tree stand. I live in the desert area so tree stands wouldn't help, just can't get high enough in the sage brush :chuckle: One thing that might be different for you is on broad heads. No mechanicals here on big game and other rules with that as well. Just make sure and read that carefully. Other than that, good luck and happy hunting!

Oh yeah, forgot, you're supposed to take your first Washington deer with a knife, by hand, close quarters combat style. Watch out for their hooves 8)

Go north of Spokane if you want to hunt elk. Or your best bet? Go a few miles east into Idaho. LOTS of Elk just north of Rathdrum. I lived there for awhile and was going up into the mountains nearly every day. Good whitetail hunting too. Good luck! :)

Thank you everyone for your input. I will be reading the regs and learning more than anything the rest of this year.
