Title: Bought The Go-To Gun. Buyer's Remorse
Post by: Three_Oh_Eight on August 23, 2012, 09:32:16 PM: So I bought a stainless/synthetic Remington M700 XCR in 7mm Rem Mag as a "go-to" rifle for WA hunting. I just can't warm up to it. I have never liked ss/plastic even though I know its more appropriate for around here. I've had it a few weeks and still haven't even shot it yet and I'm honestly not that excited about it. Now what?

It would make me happy if I could make my M70 300 H&H weigh as much as this M700 without ditching the wood stock. Remington grossly over-states rifle weight on their website. This rifle, with 26 inch barrel, sling, Leupold DD mounts and rings and a VX-2 3-9x40 weigh EXACTLY 8 pounds. My M70 weighs 10. That's a positive in the M700s direction.

Its without a doubt my go to rifle.I felt bad about taking it out in the woods with it having an A grade walnut stock, and the best blueing job ive ever seen, but the MOA trigger on these rifles is way too nice to not shoot at something. If you dont love it now, sell it before you even shoot it and get something you really like. That way once you kill something with it, you'll love it.

BTW - I don't have a 7mm Rem mag yet, so if you really need to get rid of it, I could take it off your hands. :) 8)

Post by: jackmaster on August 24, 2012, 10:18:40 AM: in all seriousness, if you dont like it and dont feel comfortable with it then i would get rid of it, nothin worse than huntn with a weapon that you dont trust or like, maybe you could get a wood stock for it and have someone paint the barrel and action, or trade it to someone. i have a single shot ruger#1 falling block, it is wood and very heavy but i absolutly love that gun, it shoots perfect and balanced like no other gun i have held, well my m203 was pretty balanced :chuckle: but it isnt legal in the real world.. :chuckle:

Good choice, were using the TTSX 140's now with the R22, and they are going about 3500 fps.

The action is super simple and feels somewhat loose in the receiver and the plastic stocks they sit the action and barrel in are crap. Unless you go to the Sendero line, they just dont feel that good.

BUT..

They shoot pretty great AND.. you can litterally find a TON of aftermarket items to make it your rifle.

I started with a Rem 700 300 Ultra Mag XCRII.. and ended up changing just about everything.

I would keep it and go on Stocky's and order yourself a B&C/HS Precision/McMillan drop in stock and see how you feel after. JUST doing that one thing will make you feel different about your rifle.

Or be like me in would rather buy something used/older and redo everything and bring that thing back to life by putting a little bit of yourself into it like a old car! i just finished a now beautiful 1971 m70 7mmRm with high grade walnut and gloss blueing with iron sights a classic mountain rifle! when i was refinishing the stock the previous owner had his name, address and date on the butt of the stock when i removed the butt pad kinda a cool feeling letting that ol rifle hunt again!

I really do like quirky cartridges and retro cartridges. My 300 H&H is my favorite rifle by far, but its heavy enough that if I sling it on my shoulder, it cuts off the circulation to my arm. Its nice and steady to shoot though and I love the look of the cartridge. I'm also a 7x57 fan.

That brings me to one of my original motivations for buying this rifle. Sometimes having a 270/308/30-06/7mm RM/300 WM is a good thing. Those are the most common big-game cartridges around and I've been getting tired of spending so much time reloading for lots of different niche cartridges. I've become more of a gun nut and less of a hunter.

I have that weapon but mine is over 30 years old. I can tell you if you put Berger 168 grain vld bullets through that gun you will be very happy with the results. The accuracy and stopping power is fantastic with the folks who have used this combo.

Just my personal opinion with this weapon.

Put it in the classifieds for sale, or trade for a nice warm blued/wood rifle and specified caliber... there are enough guys on here that you will find the go to gun you are looking for....

Just keep looking for that gun which gives you that "warm, fuzzy feeling" when you pick it up. Mine ended up being a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger.

The 7mm Rem Mag is high on my list of caliber which I just don't care for. It's a great round which will cover all of your hunting in this state. Same goes for the 308, 30-06, and 270. On the small bore side, I don't like the 223 or 243.

You could try having the barreled action nitrided. Then end result looks like a dark bluing job.

This is a matte stainless barrel which was treated. You could also have a more polished look if you wanted.

It wouldn't help with the caliber, but nitriding and a new stock may make the gun more aesthetically pleasing.

Loaded up some 140gr TTSX kissing the lands until I found pressure, and then dinked with COAL until I got the most consistent groups. Using Remmy hulls, CCI 250s, RL22 and 140gr TTSX. Best groups were the hottest *yet sane* groups and loaded .1 off the lands (I know, kinda far, but seems like these bullets like to jump). Cleaned, sized and reloaded cases with the best combo and took it out the next day. I think if I shot 10 shots, cold bore, all 10 shots would have easily been within 1/2 to 3/4 inch at 100 yards. 1st shot cold bore was extremely consistent.
