Title: Mold on my newer wall tent, What do I do????
Post by: trophyhunt on August 25, 2012, 09:11:11 AM
Yes I screwed up and put my 16x24 wall tent away just slightly wet after last season. It's only 3 years old so I kinda thought in my mind that I wouldn't have to worry about it for a while, well I pulled it out yesterday and found mold on a small area of it. I'm very disappointed in my self but now I'm done dealing with my guilt, I need to know what is the best way to start getting rid of it??? Please any advise would be great, I did call Montana canvas but they are not open till Monday. Yes, I'm a bone head on this one.

The one thing I've heard to do is wash it with warm soap and water, that is where I'm starting.

Try 1 part vinegar to 5 part water solution. If that doesn't work try hydrogen peroxide in small area.

Do I let it soak in or scrub and rinse off? Thanks

I will try it, I assume I scrub it into the canvas then wash it off?

Nylon bristle brush, circular motion and don't use a lot of pressure, you want the ends of the bristles to get into the cracks. This will kill the mold and smell but won't do anything for a stain. You may need to wash with soap for that.

Thanks guys, I got the vinegar and have washed it. Thanks for your help, the stain is still there but hopefully the mold is dead. This won't happen again!!

Oxiclean, the powder is avail at costco so you can vari the mixture.
It is an oxygen bleach as compared to a chlorine bleach so it wont smell like bleach, it does kill mold growth..scrub like described above...

Wow vinegar. I assume bleach would wear out the fabric too much?

I guess, I was told after putting a weak solution of bleach on to not put bleach on it because of the fibers. I'm wondering if I should spray more vinegar on the mold spots and just leave it on without spraying off? nobody has told me if I need to spray it off yet, I'm not complaining, I'm just not sure if it needs to be sprayed off after applying.

Most of the tent manufacturers sell a liguid you can put on to help with mildew resistance. Ask your tent company about it.

Borax!! Works on walls too and it's a mold inhibitor so it shouldn't come back.

Set the tent up in your yard and spray the whole thing down with Thompsons original (use a garden sprayer). A little mold won't even have an effect on it after that. I bought one over 25 years ago and sprayed it with Thompsons and I've had no problems with mold even when I put it away with some dampness on it. You can't stop the moisture in this part of the country but you can protect the fabric.

Are we treating and preserving a deck or a canvas wall tent??(thats the response I got from the guy at Bravo tents) If your looking at preserving and making a wall tent water resistant again, I use and highly recommend Canvak, spray it on with a bug sprayer.  Cabelas and Bob's have it in stock.

i would bleach the spot as long as your not worried about color change. 1 part bleach to 9 parts water, spray it and let it sit for about 3 min tops and rinse it well. then re apply a sealant. its not gonna hurt the fabric unless you leave it on there for a reallly long time. just think how long your white t's last. i have white tees ive washed 200 times with bleach and the fabric is fine.

If it works - it works. It not only works on wood, it works great on canvas too and probably costs less too. It has lasted over 25 years on my tent and I've had no rot even with all the moisture we've dealt with. Thompsons is a multi-use product.
