Title: Bear Rug Advice
Post by: snohohunter on August 20, 2008, 08:55:47 AM
I'm having my bear made into a rug....but they had a ton of options for the color of fabric.  I've seen red/black, black/brown, dark brown/light brown...and everything in between.

Then of course, what color is on top/bottom.

Any advice/thoughts?

Thanks. - Snoho

If your bear is black, I would recomend black on the bottom border and then a color you like between the bear and the black felt. I personally like the marroons, or dark green or even charcoal. Actually charcoal or a darker grey looks real nice.Did you make sure they machine sew the felt to the bear and not hot glue it?

I really like the black on the bottom and a nuetral color such as charcoal or a dark tan/brown against the bear.
It all comes down to what you like.  You can see the black/tan color scheme on the recent 06 bear post.

It's a black bear - (below).  I don't know much about rugs, so I'll make sure they sew it, and not hot glue.

Look at this one.  I would have reversed the colors, as I like black on bottom, but I really like the way the felt was cut.

I would recomend using the black on the bottom then, now if it was brown colored bear I would recomend brown on the botton, with a tan color in between . But to each there own on the colors. I dont actually like the tan on the bottom on the 06 bear, I think th e tan shoul break up the border . With the brown on top it blends in with the hair to well and you dont get that nice looking border around, alll I see is the single tan, but thats how I look at it. You can go with pink if you want  :chuckle:. There are very big differances on rug quality also, starting with the Tan used to tan the hide. Enjoy your bear rug when you get it back!! Congrats on the bear again.

That is a better way of saying what I was thinking, Charlie.  I like the outline broken up better.  The thing I like the most is that the felt is cut on a sort of "leafy" patter as opposed to just cut with "triangle" shears.

I use a Pinking machine on all my rugs just like in the pictures you posted. I was going to grab some examples and post but the wife only had the marroon cut.

I agree with the comments on complimentary colors... black, grey, brown, etc.  If you're into the green/red stuff, by all means go for it.  Just my  :twocents:

My bear rug has two layers of just black felt, I really like how that looks.  You start adding a bunch of
bright colors and it ends up looking like a bear wearing a square dancing skirt, to me.

Here is mine from last year. It was a cinnamon colored bear but it has the black and maroon also. The black is a lot more visible than the picture shows.

I never recomend black on black but it does make the rug look bigger than it is. Personally I like the dark charcoal grey on black probably the best. I hear ya on the bright colors too, dont like them.

Maybee you could post a picture of your black on black rug EastWaViking?

Here is the double black, I had the taxidermist keep the felt fairly short too, just my preference.

wow, that is beautiful. If I get a nice one this year, I'm going with the black i think. Anyone have a pic of the charcoal on black? For some reason talking about matching colors of a bear rug is so much more manly then wall colors. i didn't really give a care for what my wife painted the family room walls, but the trim on my bear, now thats will take some thought!Q :IBCOOL:
