I'm in the market for a new jacket and pants... I definitley want to layer. I'm pretty set on the underneath stuff just looking for a new shell/outer layer I guess and pants that go with it. I've had some Sitka gear and honestly I don't think its worth the big bucks so that's out no question. Been looking at the new Under Armour Ridge Reaper shell. Kinda spendy but I like the fit and feel. Want something I can use in pretty much all seasons if needed. Keeping in mind layering. I hear Kryptek isn't too bad? My dad has some older Rivers West but I remember he said it gets hot and doesn't really breathe. Any thoughts on other gear?
Thanks

Wool...
may not be water repellent, but it breathes good and it will keep you warm...

Yeah I'm a fan of merino wool for underneath. Looking for something synthetic water/wind proof for outer layer. Oh yeah, my primary hunt this year is in the Rubie mountains so I'll be doing LOTS of hiking/climbing.

Kryptek is getting good words from the guys using it. I think the pants are not stretchy, at least they didn't used to be. I know some were annoyed by that. Seems a lot are buying the Kuiu stuff and the price is not too bad if you can find it.

Rivers West you might as well wear some garbage bags under your jacket...

I bought firstlite merino wool under layers and Russell Athletic APX g2 outer layers for a November hunt in Idaho's backcountry last year and I am pleased with it.

i have kryptek coldo blockage rain jacket and pants and i am very impressed with it. it is strictly rain/wet weather gear tho. not super quiet but very waterproof. and no gore tex to go bad. similar to kuiu but a bit quieter.

Yeah I've been meaning to check out the Russell stuff too.

I have a pair of Kuiu Attack pants, and I really like them. They are not water proof, but very water resistant, and extremely comfortable.

Kuiu Attack Pants are the best fitting pants that I've ever worn. Beats the crap out of Sitka Gear (and I own a bunch of that.) The jackets are really nice, as well.

Take a look at core4element I have a lot of there stuff and I like it.

I have sitka 90% and celsius, russell apxg2, and kuiu. If you will be hiking a lot, I would recommend the kuiu. I think the apxg2 will be too warm.

I use surplus camo BDU's the new ones have velcro for the pockets which i remove (too loud)
$25 a pair...
Smartwool and icebreaker make nice merino wool shirts (not camo), and I have a couple Kuiu quarter zip merino wool camo tops.
Nice thing about wool base layers is they don't hold smell like the other stuff.

Man I really like the Kuiu so far. According to their fit chart I'm about dead nuts in size to the medium stuff which would be sweet since its on sale. I emailed customer service to get a better description on the fit whether layering is considered and am waiting to hear back. If the medium stuff doesn't work out I'm bummed, the Large is out of stock. Waiting to hear a status on that too. Thanks so far for the input!

The same person designed Sitka and Kuiu, but the Kuiu line is a tad larger than the Sitka line. This is based on the stuff I own. I normally wear size 30 but they didn't have that size. So I bought their smallest size (32) and I could put a lot of layers under. Someone with a size 32 that owns the Kuiu stuff can probably give you a better feedback on the fit. Good luck. Their stuff is good.

Lots of Core4 stuff on camofire tomorrow.

My dad ordered some core4 from camofire... Not bad. Ended up pulling the trigger on some kuiu gear. Guide DCS jacket and Guide pants. Would have gone for the attack pants but they were sold out. Great review on em too and could have saved $50. Whatever, I put it off too long anyhow and needed to get some things as the season is coming up quick.
Thanks for the input fellas!

I really like like the ridge reaper stuff.

I'm a 34 waiste and have size 36 in the Kuiu pants, waiste fits perfect a bit long but that will get hemmed. I also have room for layers but its not too much to ware by themselves, I absolutely love my Kuiu gear. Really like their guide gloves with the inserts!
