Title: Training birds
Post by: GrousePointer on September 01, 2012, 08:53:27 AM
Hi all,

I'm in the process of moving back to WA after more than four years.

I've accumulated a few Pointers over the last four years and as a result, I have need of training birds. Can anyone recommend a game bird breeder reasonably close to Clark county? Homers would be fine too.

welcome back! :hello:

I gave up on overpriced/poor flying/ sickly /pen raised/ west side birds along time ago and started using bird launchers and pigeons.  I think I have saved a fortune and a lot of headaches going this route.

there are some pro bird raisers on this site that could probably give you a more positive answer than me, hopefully they will chime in. you might be better off heading south into oregon for pen raised birds.

I've had the same issues with pen raiseds. Homing pigeons are indeed a nice cheap alternative. Pen raised chukar aren't bad either with a launcher.

In this  case I have a dog that I'm not quite done gun proofing. Normally I'd call the local shooting preserve, but I'm literally rolling into town and just getting oriented.

Here's a follow up question.

 Due to the speed of my move back here I'm living the nightmare with three Pointers in a house on a postage stamp lot (hopefully this will change in the coming months). Anyhow, this means I have no place to train and even shoot training birds over my dogs.

Are there any areas to do this in Clark county or the surrounding areas?

You have two areas close by;
Vancouver Lake,  check regs with early goose.  but it is a state training area
Sauvie Island just west of Portland.  You can pick up training permit on the island,  you do not have to be a Oregon res. to train there.  I think permit is $35.00 for the year. (12 months after purchase date)

I do not know if it is a release site.  (I only hunt wild birds) But I know quite a few trialers and trainers that train out there through out the summer.

Sauvie Island is the site of a lot of walking field trials and hunt test through the year.  Off the top of my head I now the Oregon Weimaraner Club is one and they probably have a links page of other local clubs in that area.
