Just wondering who's hitting the high country this sept? I was heading back into the Alpine Lake's but I drew a Entiat tag and not sure about getting time off or not. I might do a 4 day hunt for bear and glass deer for my pard.
Which is your high haunt? Mine Alpine lake wilderness!!
-
creeping death I think I will also be in the alpine lakes for deer this sept.
-
This will be my second year. I kinda wonder if the bucks are bigger in the Payestean. ALW put the deer closer to their cousin the Blacktail. I just thought of this.
For me it's more about the adventure and seein lots of bear. Wonder which one of these wilderness area's has the best gene pool.

I'll be somewhere in the high country come September, I just haven't decided where yet.
-
I think I am also going into the Henry Jackson for some day trips..
-
I will be Archery Elk hunting for the most part during that time...but I would like to hit the Alpine Lakes area...as I have never done it.
-
I'll be in the Apline lakes wilderness are with my two sons. I just started getting myself in shape as soon as i found out I didn't get drawn for any deer hunts. This hunt is more about being in the high country then anything. I can't wait. I better start getting in shape. 8)

I was headed to the Pasayten or Chelan Rec area, but NM is calling my name this year. I couldn't tell you which has the biggest gene pool. ANy of the Chelan country seems to produce big animals. I've seen some boss hawgs in the Teanaway, and several migrators out of the Pasayten are big. I've yet to see a true hawg in the Pasayten, but they have to be back there somewhere as they migrate out of there.

I think the bad boys are Canadians. :dunno:
-
BC boy definatley has something to say about that. :)

COunt me in for the hgh hunt! It is and absolute blast! Only about a month left. :)
-
I won't make the high hunt this year. We'll be too busy scouting Toutle and Oregon for the elk tags we drew there.
-
Zane, glad to see you on here finally! You'll probably find it better in many ways than 'the other site'... I forgot, is your scouting trip this week or was it last week? How'd it go? ;)

Yeah, scouting trip is this week, I will let ya know what it turned up!

I am planning to try the ALW this year. I hunted the Pasayten last season south of the burn and saw a lot of does, bot no bucks.
Does anyone out there know of a lake with good camping for a family and deer within hiking distance as well?
Can a hunter catch and eat trout up there?
-
Find a lake up on a ridge somewhere, there should be plenty to choose from, sounds like a good cast and blast trip.
-
My partner fell off the wagon. Well our timing didn't match up this season. So I will be hunting solo in ALW most likely after the 15th.
-
Im thinking about trying out a high buck hunt this year as well because I want to get away from all the other hunters. I have never tried a high hunt but for you that have I was wondering if there is a lot of pressure at the high elevetions. I heard you guys talking about the Alpine unit but what about the other high buck hunts...like the Cascade, Diablo, or Stillaguamish units? Are any of these good places to get up high and get away from the crowds?
-
They do it by Wildnerness areas not by GMU.
Modern Rifle
High Buck Seasons Sept. 15-25
Alpine Lakes, Glacier Peak,Pasayten, and Olympic Peninsula Wilderness Areas; Lake Chelan Recreation Area; and Henry Jackson Wilderness Area(See page 74 for USFS maps)

Ok thanks. Im not a rifle hunter though...just a beginning bowhunter interested in backpacking up high to get a chance at a big buck with little competition. Where exactly are the other wilderness areas located...I mean what GMU's specifically? Has anyone hunted up in those high areas with a bow?
-
People are probably hunting them with bows right now and if I recall the muzzleloader high buck is at the same time. The general outline of the wilderness areas is kind of a thing you can do with a state map or atlas of some kind. Take the list above and a map and connect the dots 8) Some of the places you mentioned will be part of the wildnerness designation. I think the Stilly would have good critters but a lot of the terrain on the west side down low is terrain that is heavily vegetated and harder to look across valleys and across distances.

Ok thanks a lot for the help
