Title: How to handle a young dog pointing, when not hunting

Like the title says...

I would like to know what everyone does if you are out hiking and you run into a covey of quail or some chukkar and your young dog goes into full point????

What do you say to the dog? 

What do you do to let the dog know he did good, without disappointing him by not busting the birds, since you are not hunting....

treat it like a normal hunting/training situation except minus the gun. if the dog does good in accordance to his training, praise him.  go ahead and flush the birds like normal. there will be many times the pup will do his job but the bozo with the gun won't be able to bring a bird down, this will be good practice for those moments.

I agree with Stilly. When the birds flush clap your hands to simulate the shot. Sounds crazy, buta dog that breaks at the shot will break when a blank gun is fired or when you clap, simulating the shot.

I agree with the above post and if your dog is steady to the flush and the "shot" then since there is no retrieve you should heel your dog away.  Do this by coming up to the dog and moving the dogs head with your leg to break the focus of the point and walk away giving praise.

I appreciate it...  can not wait to be able to get this dog off leash out of an enclosed area and let him run....  See what he can really do.
