Maybe I will tag out early on elk and get a wolf tag.................................................Oh who am I kidding. I never tag out early. :chuckle: Maybe I buy one and go anyway. I'm looking forward to watchinhg this # climb.
-
Tagged, for pleasure!
-
I was in St. Maries to Avery to Wallace to the Montana border the past couple days. Didn't see any sign whatsoever. Everybody that I talked to said there is a very good population of wolves around St, Maries and to shoot every damn one of them. They said I was a little early and wait a month or so. Weather I guess.
-
Let the Killing begin! :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
-
What is the price of a tag ? I need a wolf :dunno:

Out of state license and tag, it was $181.50 if I remember right. Oh, that's with my disabled vehicle permit too. That was about $1.50, yes a $1.50.
-
nope, they are $31.75 since last year.
-
Sorry, your right campmeat. I forgot the liscence part. I don't think of that cause I always buy it anyways for deer.
$154.00 for a hunting licsense and $31.75 for the tag.

It's OK, don't loose any sleep over it............... :chuckle:

Just hope they don't meet their quota before I can get over there later this year, Hopefully near end of year so I can try to tag out for both years

You can get 5 wolves per year, so hopefully !!!

14 is nothing, if anything this proves that traditional hunting and trapping is ineffective in managing wolves.
-
I sure do like Idaho's Fish and Game website a WHOLE LOT BETTER than the WDFW website...much easier to navigate and more intuitive.
-
They aren't even purty yet. Sure do love the enthusiasm to take them out though. No deer or elk to shoot, might as well smuck a wolf
-
I'll be in the panhandle shortly, I might have to "get me some"
-
Just remember the season extends until next year...Most people aren't even hunting for the Wolves yet. The numbers, imho, will increase significantly when people are modern rifle hunting
-
Looking forward to giving money to Idaho fish and game for the chance (again) to chase the grey wolf. Wont be long now....
-
The animals are spread out right now and so are the wolves. Once we get a little weather the numbers will pop. Everyone in that state will have a tag in their back pocket this year!
-

The season extends, but you have to get a new license and tag on 1/1/2013.

I just called Idaho Fish and Game. I asked where the best bet to kill a wolf is and the answer is,
between St. Maries to Avery to Clarkia.

Thanks for the info. That's the general area where I was aiming to go wolf hunting this January, so it appears I picked a good spot to start.

I'm going in November myself. I've been in those areas 2 times this year, nothing, too warm. The guys I talked to at the sporting goods store in St Maries said that's the best area too......

I sure wish they'd say exactly where in Idaho. The game dept said St. Maries area had the highest rate of wolves killed last year. I didn't see squat there. I still want one bad !!
-
You may have sort of answered your own question.... partially
Seems they are dang near everywhere in Idaho, but I would think that the areas with the highest kills will now have less of them! Right?
Or at least the ones that are left in those areas will be much smarter afa hunters are concerned.
-
Thats crazy ...Idaho sure does have a problem ...I need to go get me one :yeah:

Fishhook Creek had a detour, so I went over Marble Creel to Clarkia. Boy oh boy, is that thick, steep hunting. I couldn't of shot one if I saw it. I could only see what was on the road for a half second...
-
there have been wolves above Superior montana on the border since the early 90's which it the head of the St. Joe.

Find out where the highest concentration of prey is (elk, deer, cattle) and that should be where the wolves are for any given GMU. :twocents:

That's what I was told. The elk haven't come down to the winter range in that area yet. I'm just waiting. I have a friend in Stites who is begging me to come down there and hunt them. I told him I thinks it's been too warm to really try and call them or whatever it will take to put a 6.5 Creedmoor in one... I have till 12/31 before I have to buy a new out-of-state license and tag.
-
Weipee to Elk City to Dixie and up to the Mt border hold a bunch of Wolves. Hopefully the wolves that killed the bear hounds up in there will get theirs.

Wow I didn't realize how many wolves Wisconsin and Minnesota had that many wolves. I figured Idaho would be leading the pack. No pun intended.
-
just got back this afternoon from idaho and our camp of 12 heard them about every day but unfortunately no sightings. it was low 20's most of the week but when i talked with my dad about 1 pm he said it was almost 50 degrees in town and most of the snow had melted so it might be awhile for the animals to head down to winter
-
I'm hoping for the trappers to get a few over this weekend.

Thanks for the info. I have a trapper friend that isn't an Idaho resident ( Washington resident ) and he can trap wolves all day long in Idaho. I'd double, triple check on that if I were him.

I'm a little disappointed in the ID pan handle. :'( I figured they would be leading the count like they did last year for a while... I'm guessing they don't want to "harvest" too many in rifle season so that their "harvest" gets shut down...

There is no quota for the Panhandle. They won't get shut down...
-
yes but they let the count the whole year last year!
-
Well hopefully this means that last year they put a serious dent in the population and there just isn't as many this year.

ID is up to 158 dead wolves now.

Way to go boys, lay um down! By any means necessary in my opinion. A dead wolf is a damn good one!
:IBCOOL:
-
158 isn't a dent. :(
T,
If I recall, ID trappers put down a lot of wolves in the January, February, March timeframe. Also, I'd be surprised if they take 400 wolves again this year after last year's harvest. A lot of cream was skimmed off the top last season!
-
Sorry but 400 is a dent but just that.I have heard estimates of 2000 wolves in ID EVEN if you take HALF of that as an estimate 400 is almost enough. I read a study on here about a study in Alaska that said to keep a wolf population with ZERO growth you have to harvest 50-70% of the animals! That means 500-700 a year IF there is a 1k around... Since I think there is closer to double that 158 is a drop in the bucket. :twocents:
I Can only imagine that the folks in the panhandle are stacking them up and arn't making it into the count...
-
What would be the benefit of not reporting them? If anything it would help substantiate higher population estimates if that is really the case. Not to mention that would certainly provide ammunition for a possible injunction to stop the hunt if it could be shown that numbers were being falsified to any great extent.
According to IDFG, at the end of the 2011 season there were 746 wolves, and numbers have been steadily falling since 2009. If there are roughly 750 wolves, they are coming pretty close to the 50-60% harvest. I don't know exactly how many you have to take from a population of canines to hold it steady or reduce it.
-
189 so far. Closing in on 200 but harvest totals are down compared to last year around this time. I have been speaking with people in Idaho who are hunting them and they believe that the wolves are becoming more cautious and are getting smarter, they are learning to stay away from traps. What do you guys think?
-
Wolves are very smart so ya I think they are learning alot about what not to do and where not to be!
-

Certainly.. they were running through the hunting camp at night (tracks in the snow) 2 years ago and this year not even any fresh scat.

Hunting and trapping might finally be having an affect.
Please hold in mind i know nothing about how often wolves reproduce and I'm basing that statement totally on the fact that unlike coyotes, which people have been trying to eradicate for hundreds of years now, wolves were once successfully exterpated.
I may be completely wrong.
-
Wolves were poisoned to get rid of em. Coyotes just a nuisance, werent poisoned to the extent of wolves. Wolves couldnt be eradicated any other way successfully. :twocents:

shot um up! ;)

213 dead wolves in ID now.
