Well I struck out last weekend got pretty close on Friday Morning prob with 50 yards of some elk in the timber but couldnt get a visual. We jumped a few Huuuuge friggin bulls too but no bull tag, not to mention while i was driving in Thursday night i had what was either a 7x8 or 7x7 MONSTER BULL step out in front of my little chevy that made me squeal the breaks and also marvel and fumble with my phone frantically to get a pic but he scattered after a few seconds of staring me down. Any how heres a few herd pics from Saturday evening i counted 34 cows and 1 bull that looked liked a 5x6 or bigger.
So heres a few pics and a video i took from about 125 yards away with the phone so sorry for the poor quality. i circled him in the pics and in the video he is in the center at the start.
Links is here: Taneum Elk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY5uuSS4v_k#ws)

Havent posted much to the site in awhile as i've just been super busy but i'm still lurkin and hope to post some deer pics in the next few weeks when i whack one!!
oh and 25 BONUS POINTS TO ANYONE THAT GUESS WHY I TITLED THE PICS THE WAY I DID!!
I'm not gonna say why till somebody guesses it!! :)
-
One last note. they are super quiet right now. But based on how the bulls were acting especially this one which isnt seen in the short video makes me believe they are only days away from being in the RUT! So it should start heating up for those sticking with it!!
This guy was pushing the girlies around quite a bit and had his mouth open for a bit as well!!

Some have begun the trek to Jo Watt it would appear...

Ummmmmmmmm you and your wife/girlfriend/significant other are having a baby???
OH, and I think it is time me and my big camera went hunting for a bit.... would love to get some good bull pics right now.
-
Not having a baby! Got a 2 going on 3 yr old and that's enough for me and the wife! It has something to do with elk. The second word is elk the first word starts with a w.
-
Wifes elk???? :dunno:
-
Nope. it's a tough one. My hunting partner called this herd this name and I had never heard it before so I thought it was pretty hilarious for the few days we made it up there.

Welfare Elk

Hahaha. Welfare elk! Yep, living off the State just like many others. Free food, free housing and police protection, how could they go wrong? Hahaha LOL :chuckle:

:chuckle: Bingo! Friggin cracks me up! I said I'm going back where I saw that huge bull because I know he has cows with him and he said dint waste ur time chasing welfare elk...
-
I use to watch a good size herd in that field every year. But it's been 5 or 6 years sense I even seen an elk there
-
I think that one that is circled is mine....nice group of elk. I'll take any one of them.

Are you kidding , they live there and always have !
-
Unfortunately there's always some guy who plants his buddies on the draw up the hill behind there, sneaks past the safety zone signs, and chases them up the hill off of the Heart K. Everybody around there sees it or hears about it and it gives us all a bad name as greedy slobs. A few years ago a guy shot a big muzzleloader bull that way, his friend chased it to him off the Heart K, then he went around posting pictures and bragging about what a great hunter he was. Too bad. I like the welfare elk tag, especially when they move over to Joe Watt.
-
to clarifiy the situation there , i used to hunt that spot and sit on elk comming and going from there . Then a couple of guys that where connected with the krd went in and set tree stands and bait in there right next to the fields . they would bugger the elk outta there . on said he had stuck a cow and lost it or didn't even pursue it . I dropped my gear and went in to a no shooting zone in the bottom of rattle snake to track the blood trail btw the boundry at the time was the cannell wich is under ground right there so even the boundry was in ????. then the lazy *censored* called the game dept . a warden came up and questioned me we cleared up the matter and the guy from krd never pursued it . i did jump then wounded cow out of there but she went hell bent towards eburg . so be carefull who the fingers get pointed towards . And there's quiet a few guys in that huch area that load up a spot with tons of mineral then sit on it not much diff really . Since I've left that camp for other reasons and as for how they hunt it in the past two years I don't know . :twocents:

Agreed. They were coming going outta there quite a bit. If i had more time i coulda pulled an ambush but time was sparse and i chose to hunt the ridges and timber and not the Watt. I think there are 4 seperate herds running around up there from what we were hearing about guys bumping them simultaneously miles apart. Then again that could just be people blowing smoke in the afternoons at the campground.

I will say that if your talking about an 09 big bull by Nailbender that is not even true get your facts straight before you assume things.

I don't know who shot the bull. I have friends who live on Watt Canyon road that I hear from. I've hunted a lot in that area and I don't care if somebody sits on the hill above the ranch and hunts, more power to them. My complaint is if people do things that are illegal or unethical in the name of hunting and give the rest of us a black eye. I don't know Nailbender and I didn't see him shoot his bull so I have no issue with him. I'm relating information I received from people who live right there and I think it's relevant because I know they don't have any reason to make this stuff up, they're hunters too. Why would you get defensive about this if my point is that some people do the wrong thing and it affects all of us?
The difference there compared to elsewhere is that what you do is visible from a lot of places.

I have heard the term welfare elk alot. My family uses it to describe the elk that come down to the feed station at Oak Creek every year to get free hay whether there is snow on the ground or not. And technically those elk are not in the Taneum they are in the Manastash. And I see those elk there every year. They know where they are safe. Come winter time there will be hundreds of elk in there. Cool place to look at them.

I'm sure you and your "family" (the CCC) are familiar with welfare elk. And technically those elk are not in the Taneum they are in the Manastash. And I see those elk there every year. Yep, my kids still love seeing the elk up close and alive.
-
I hunted the Taneum / Elk Heights side of that spot for several years. I Killed several spikes and cows up there over a number of years but stopped hunting it several years ago because of all the a-holes in there. I shot a spike out of a herd of 25 coming out of the timber up on the ridge heading towards the Heart K right at first light. Right after I had it gutted and was starting to pull it downhill, 3 guys come up to me pointing thier rifles stating that they shot the elk. I ended up keeping the elk but it was a bit tense there for a bit. After that I decided they could have that spot and the welfare elk... was not really a sporting hunt anyway.
-
Those elk are always there.. Or close anyway
-
Dont 90 % of rifle hunters sit and wait for some one to scare elk past them most elk killed durring rifle season arnt shot where they wanna live , they have been pushed . as far as the nailbender bull I had him at 80 yards but he didn't present a shot and I know right where that bull was shot , VERY VERY VERY Close to the saftey zone if not on the boundry . that beening said if a guy wants to sit all day waiting for a elk to cross in or out then so be it . It would be pretty easy for the krd to chase the elk outta there if it was that big off issue , the boundry at the saftey zone is crappy old signs and broken fence lines as far as i know it only says no shooting so if a guy walks in there without any weapon and pushes elk out by law i think he's ok . Alot of people put on deer and elk pushes and I don't really see the differance if thats your style .

I think where they are standing in the pictures is taneum unit but if they climb the draw is manashatash . but I'm probably wrong it's the creek that seperatea the two units right?
-
those elk are at the very point of 334 if there between the creek and the fence but the krd isnt huntible so they would have to cross the road and pass that upper saftey zone boundry 1/4 mile to the north west to get into 336 and be legal , wich they do when said hunters spook them .

Good lord! Really?? Just as RC said…GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! Don’t start sling'n mud saying someone went behind safety zones, did something "illegal" and put it out there as an innuendo. And when you start talking about bad ethic's and try to attach my name to it...you god damn right I’m gonna take offense to that! You have NO F'n idea who the hell I am or what my moral codes are... Don't post something like that just because you want to gossip about what you "think" you know. You just assumed something you did not witness and you don’t have any privileged information to back up what you said, because it simply did not happen.
I really don't have to argue, dispute nor defend my ethics on how I shot my bull. The people who know - were with me. The people who know me.. Know who I am and what I stand for. The people who don't... gossip and try make someone else's success seem insignificant.
Well dude... just as you said, I have no problem with you as I don't know who you are either.
Just get your facts straight before you post something like that! Makes you look like a fool!
-
Seems like you're a little sensitive about this. I'm not sure why you took it personally, I certainly didn't put your name on it, one of your buddies did. My post was a generality and it describes something that happens there fairly regularly. People do lots of unethical stuff out hunting, this is but one example, unfortunately people see what happens on that hill side so it gets lots of discussion time locally and over campfires in the camps around there. I don't know why you think I'm talking about you but I'm not so get over it. If you hunt legally and ethically then I certainly have no argument with you. If you don't then maybe I can understand why you are so defensive. I have nothing else to say, if you are looking for someone to argue with you'll have to look elsewhere.
-
ok boys I know that nailbender and hunterric know that area well . I also know anyone that scouted that area well that year and spent any time sitting on the road or hill knew that that bull was there along with a 7x club bull and a large 6x6 , there was a 352 6x6 hanging around but thye rut hunter shot him and a 340 class 6x7 that I got outta the area so to say you guys had no idea he was there is bs . I saw the pick where he was laying and it was very boarder line although i'm not sure how far he travelled after the shot. also that year two guys that knew the krd manager had tree stands yards outside the boundry with bails of allfalfa on the ground by the stand . those where locals . If you wanna clear nailbender just post the damm video otherwise i'd say your hidng something . I have said my piece on this issue aswell as rg and to nailbender thats a hell of a bull and i dont blame you for hunting very close to the boundry and cant say that i wouldn't have knowing he was there .
-
It sounds like it must have been a nice bull, I congratulate him on that for his first elk. Nobody told me a name, they just described an event that they witnessed. It sounds like it could have been any number of guys. I was certainly never blaming Nailbender or anybody else specifically because I didn't see it. Everybody jumped right onto this and started thumping their chest when my intent was to merely state that we, as sportsmen and women, should hunt by the rules, it's good for our future and our image. I'm not quite sure where we decided we needed to argue about that. Have a good season this year.
-
I saw a huge cougar down in there last winter... It sat there at looked at us looking at it from the road.. I was sure wishing I could have dropped it..

Yes we will try to have a good season in about 12 days, and same to you.

RG - I'll reel back just a taste. From the impression I get from your post, you seem to have a stellar code of ethic and I belive if you felt you were challenged on it, you too, would stand up for what you believe in.
I wish you a great season this year as well!
-
Thanks Nailbender. I probably could have been more careful how I worded my original post on this. I believe your description of the events of your hunt, it sounds like it was a great elk. Have a good season too.

dang- I leave for a day of archery Elk hunting and everyone gets all fired up! hehehe

Welfare Elk
Ding ding ding!!! Nice job!! I've never heard them called that before and it's so true and hilarious!
That was the reason we shot the bull it was costing us all $$$ in hay!!! Not a big fan of welfare system I guess!

When I lived in the Yakima area we called all the elk in the Naches area welfare elk with the feeding station there.

i'm the lazy *censored* i took a welfare elk and it was timothy fed but i shot it outside the safety zone and i did recover it. i left my bow and tracked out into the field, marked last blood and two guys on the hill above pointed me in her last direction. i didnt track her immediately because i didnt want to push her and wouldn't ya know she followed the creek back and died just outside the safety zone near where i shot her, we found her that morning. called the game warden on 2 guys with bows in the safety zone days later. also the canal is underground but being connected with krd i know the boundaries very well, I'm not sure what you were trying to say but it sounds like your confused where the boundary is?
that must be a differnet cow my friend and good for you following up on your shot . the cow i tracked ended up in the private property to the east . and yes I know that boundry very well , the real sticky part is between the barbwire fence and the canal and now that they have changed the boundry to the elk fence the very west tip is difficult to pinpoint a lil better signage and a slight boundry change to the base of that hill would fix the problem down there (but then those two tree stands in the edge of the field would be off limits) .
