I think that one that is circled is mine....nice group of elk.  I'll take any one of them.
If you love something you will set it free, if it don't come home, hunt it down and kill it.

Unfortunately there's always some guy who plants his buddies on the draw up the hill behind there, sneaks past the safety zone signs, and chases them up the hill off of the Heart K.  Everybody around there sees it or hears about it and it gives us all a bad name as greedy slobs.  A few years ago a guy shot a big muzzleloader bull that way, his friend chased it to him off the Heart K, then he went around posting pictures and bragging about what a great hunter he was.  Too bad.  I like the welfare elk tag, especially when they move over to Joe Watt.

to clarifiy the situation there , i used to hunt that spot and sit on elk comming and going from there . Then a couple of guys that where connected with the krd went in and set tree stands and bait in there right next to the fields . they would bugger the elk outta there . on said he had stuck a cow and lost it or didn't even pursue it . I dropped my gear and went in to a no shooting zone in the bottom of rattle snake to track the blood trail btw the boundry at the time was the cannell wich is under ground right there so even the boundry was in ????. then the lazy *censored* called the game dept . a warden came up and questioned me we cleared up the matter and the guy from krd never pursued it . i did jump then wounded cow out of there but she went hell bent towards eburg . so be carefull who the fingers get pointed towards . And there's quiet a few guys in that huch area that load up a spot with tons of mineral then sit on it not much diff really . Since I've left that camp for other reasons and as for how they hunt it in the past two years I don't know .  :twocents:

Agreed. They were coming going outta there quite a bit. If i had more time i coulda pulled an ambush but time was sparse and i chose to hunt the ridges and timber and not the Watt. I think there are 4 seperate herds running around up there from what we were hearing about guys bumping them simultaneously miles apart. Then again that could just be people blowing smoke in the afternoons at the campground.

I will say that if your talking about an 09 big bull by Nailbender that is not even true get your facts straight before you assume things.

I don't know who shot the bull.  I have friends who live on Watt Canyon road that I hear from.  I've hunted a lot in that area and I don't care if somebody sits on the hill above the ranch and hunts, more power to them.  My complaint is if people do things that are illegal or unethical in the name of hunting and give the rest of us a black eye.  I don't know Nailbender and I didn't see him shoot his bull so I have no issue with him.  I'm relating information I received from people who live right there and I think it's relevant because I know they don't have any reason to make this stuff up, they're hunters too.  Why would you get defensive about this if my point is that some people do the wrong thing and it affects all of us?
The difference there compared to elsewhere is that what you do is visible from a lot of places.

I have heard the term welfare elk alot.  My family uses it to describe the elk that come down to the feed station at Oak Creek every year to get free hay whether there is snow on the ground or not.  And technically those elk are not in the Taneum they are in the Manastash.  And I see those elk there every year.  They know where they are safe.  Come winter time there will be hundreds of elk in there.  Cool place to look at them.

Yep, my kids still love seeing the elk up close and alive.

I hunted the Taneum / Elk Heights side of that spot for several years. I Killed several spikes and cows up there over a number of years but stopped hunting it several years ago because of all the a-holes in there.  I shot a spike out of a herd of 25 coming out of the timber up on the ridge heading towards the Heart K right at first light.  Right after I had it gutted and was starting to pull it downhill, 3 guys come up to me pointing thier rifles stating that they shot the elk.  I ended up keeping the elk but it was a bit tense there for a bit.  After that I decided they could have that spot and the welfare elk... was not really a sporting hunt anyway.

Dont 90 % of rifle hunters sit and wait for some one to scare elk past them most elk killed durring rifle season arnt shot where they wanna live , they have been pushed . as far as the nailbender bull I had him at 80 yards but he didn't present a shot and I know right where that bull was shot , VERY VERY VERY Close to the saftey zone if not on the boundry . that beening said if a guy wants to sit all day waiting for a elk to cross in or out then so be it . It would be pretty easy for the krd to chase the elk outta there if it was that big off issue , the boundry at the saftey zone is crappy old signs and broken fence lines as far as i know it only says no shooting so if a guy walks in there without any weapon and pushes elk out by law i think he's ok . Alot of people put on deer and elk pushes and I don't really see the differance if thats your style .

I think where they are standing in the pictures is taneum unit but if they climb the draw is manashatash . but I'm probably wrong it's the creek that seperatea the two units right?

those elk are at the very point of 334 if there between the creek and the fence but the krd isnt huntible so they would have to cross the road and pass that upper saftey zone boundry 1/4 mile to the north west to get into 336 and be legal , wich they do when said hunters spook them .
