Title: My current set up
Post by: boneaddict on September 12, 2012, 02:14:41 PM
Idabooner designed this 30 years ago to hunt elk.   He cut up an old parachute.   I have had it stuffed in my closet for sometime.  Hurting for weight reduction this last trip I decided to give it a go.

There usually aren't mice where I go, just wolves and grizzly bears, and the occasional marten.

Yes, it can go more taught.   I would probably anchor it to the ground too on the backside.   I don't think it would withstand much weather.

Yes I have been at them.   Both of my normal haunts are wolfed out.   The first I discovered scouting, hoping to avoid having to go to my second location.   Its just hard on the body.  Went to it and It was filled with wolves.  Saw three.    I could have dropped a 145 buck but thats it.  Too deep for that.   Went to a new location at the end of this week, and no bucks.    I'll post my set up for that place shortly.

Those are running out 400.   Alot of it has to do with the style of hunting I do hunting the high open mountains.   The wolves target those deer as they are sight hunters.  Ask anyone from Montana that hunt the high country.   Hell, everyone that goes to Yellowstone.....see many muledeer there.   They are particularly vulnerable to wolves.

I would also lower this one in bad conditions.

Yes, the deer are adapting.   When I state increase in sign, let that be measured against everywhere else versus historical amounts of sign.    The deer in the transition zone are fairing better than those up high.

......so, I was sitting in the bark colored dirt in the photo yesterday after hunting all morning.  I was chewing a piece of jerky and all of a sudden a coyote materializes in front of me.  Gave me a startle kind of as I didn't have any clue, and having been sitting there daydreaming about wolves. I hadn't seen any sign at all of them by the way.     I stretched out and grabbed the bow.  You can see it hanging there.  The movement caught his attention, but then he turned away.  I came to a knee and stuck one into him.    He let out a couple yipes and whirled around then stopped.  Stood there for about 2 minutes then fell over dead. I wouldn't have done it normally but I was about to pack and go.   You'll note I only carried 3 arrows.   Usually only need one.
