Its been a busy week, but I'm finally able to sit down at the computer and type up the story.
When I first drew this tag I was elated, having wanting to draw a margaret bull tag since the first time I heard about it, but I had quit applying for it because the quality of bulls and the hunt itself seemed to have dropped. Well last year they changed it from quality to bull, perfect! It was my only choice in the bull catagory and I was lucky enough to draw with 9 points. Scouting started right away on google earth, topo maps and searching online forums, as well as talking to a few guys who I know have a lot of knowledge of the area.
A buddy of mine drew a rifle cow tag in there last year, so luckily I had some pretty good knowledge already of the weyco side of the unit, and just a general idea of the lay of the land.
One area I didn't know at all was the east end of the unit, I knew I needed to scout it and was planning on using it as a backup plan in case weyco shut down to fire danger, which I knew was a likely possibilty. A good family friend, a few members on this site, and google earth was a huge help on ideas of where to start in the highcountry stuff on the east end of the unit. After several trips, lots of gas burned and a ton of animals spotted, I thought I had a pretty good idea on what to do if in fact I did end up having to hunt up there. There was one bull in particular that we had spotted and watched, he had a dozen cows and was already love drunk the first weekend of september, a good 5 point bull I would gladly take with my bow if given the opportunity.
The first weekend much to my surprise Weyco still had the st hellens tree farm open, so a good friend of mine tagged along with me to hunt an area I had scouted which had some really good looking meadows and 5 good size wallows, several miles behind the gate. Perfect.
Opening morning started out great, getting within 30 yards of a herd which had one screaming bull, he just never would show himself. This valley had as many as half a dozen bulls screaming at one time, by the end of the day we figured we heard at least a dozen different bulls, but never was able to close the distance, actually never even saw one of the bulls. I would bugle and locate a bull, or they would just bugle on their own, and everytime I would try to close the distance (this was really steep on either side of the valley so it was tough going) they would just shut up and sneak out of there. I think they just werent ready yet, all the rubs I was finding were a week or two old, guessing velvet rubs, and the wallows had barely been touched. We werent able to get one bull riled up, they would just bugle like saying hello, and that was it, no calling strategy seemed to work. I am not an expert caller by any means, but I've had bulls get fired up and come in plenty of times, these guys just didn't seem ready.
After a long week back at working, thinking of what to do and how to up my odds and call in one of the many bulls we heard, I got the news weyco had shut down all entry due to extreme fire danger. Great. Onto plan B.
I recruited my good buddy Beavis to tag along with me into the margaret back country. We left town friday, and began the grueling but short climb up the mountain in the afternoon heat, with full packs ready to stay the weekend and give it our best attempt at tagging a high country bull in the rugged country around 5,000ft.
As we near the top, I let out one locate bugle, which was quickly answered, hard to tell from which direction, but it gave us hope. Once we got close to the ridge, I let out a couple cow calls, which were answered instantly by a bull. He sounded lonely and not far away, game on! We found a good vantage point and started glassing, I saw a good bull the direction the bugles had been coming from, he was looking our direction in search of the cows. We watched him for a while, there was a small 4x5 below him that apparently didn't want to mess with the bigger bull because as the 5 point worked down the ridge, screaming and raking trees as he came, that smaller bull got the heck out of there.
At one point the bull was about 180 yards away, just tearing up a small cedar tree and I told Beavis I'm gonna go try to get closer. He was digging through his pack trying to find his calls and I was sure he would be right behind me. I walked down to a lower trail that I figured would take me within 100 yards or so of the bull, as I rounded the corner, slowly and quietly, I knocked an arrow just in case. I worked towards the edge of the small ridge and saw antlers! Well the bull must have heard me, and I guess he was still thinking about those cow calls (it had been 30 mins since I last called) and he headed right towards me. He walked behind a bush, well within range and I drew back and fully stood up, as he walked out from behind the huckleberry bush at 15 yards slightly quartering towards me, I put my 20 right behind his shoulder and shot. It was a solid hit and the bull didn't know was just happened, he ran about 20 yards downhill and just stood there. I was able to range him at 34 yards at a steep angle downhill, put my 30 behind his shoulder and let it fly (this time from the opposite side of the first shot) the arrow blew through him, just a touch back but still well within the lungs and this time he knew he was in trouble, he ran staight down the hill, across the narrow part of the lake and started to get wobbly about half way across, luckily he made it just to the other side before he layed down and I was able to hear him take his last few breaths. What a rush.
I met up with Beavis on the trail, who couldn't figure out where I had went and was being careful to not screw me up incase I had something going on. I told him I killed him "what?" I killed him! We went back up top to where our packs were and I showed him the dead bull just on the other side of the lake, I was completely elated. This was my first bull I have killed with my bow and I was stoked, Beavis on the other hand probably felt a little jipped... we were only about 45 minutes into the hunt and he was already recruited to being a meat packer!
We were able to quarter him up and hang the meat in game bags, take our packs (they were still plum full with food and gear for the weekend) and the head back down to the truck by 3 AM.
All in all it was an awesome hunt, there are a ton of elk in the margaret, and no shortage of bulls thats for sure. Those elk are very vocal, which makes for an awesome hunt successful or not. I'm about 90% positive this is the 5 point bull we had seen 3 weeks prior that had a dozen cows, I'd sure like to see the bull that stole all his cows... I know hes around there somewhere. I know hes not the biggest on the mountain but I couldn't be happier with him. Thanks for all your help Beavis, it didn't turn into much of a hunt, just a meat packing trip! I owe ya a big one. I'd also like to thank my dad, Tyson and Jerome for coming and helping us pack as well, it sure meant a lot and saved Beav and I one trip that would have been a killer.

I believe I had 9 points this year. Very fun hunt, lots of bulls and they are really vocal, not an easy hunt though, we worked hard for this bull I had nicknamed "billy" as he was living up there with the goats.
I was sad to see he had some hoof rot in the one hind leg, I heard its not affecting the elk up high because it's drier ground but I guess that's not the case. He showed no signs of favoring that leg, but it looked painful and smelled pretty sour.
-
Beautiful bull! Congrats!!!
-
Congratulations!! Glad you took him. won't have that decision come November :chuckle: I think I've been watching him. Out of the brush below Panhandle/Shovel? Way to get it done.

Hey there sirmisalot! We were up off the 2612 trail Saturday 9/15 and saw the gutpile along the Panhandle outlet in the morning, and then saw your bull in the back of the white pickup on our way out Saturday night, I think you guys were packing out the meat right behind us. I had the Khaki Jeep Wrangler Rubicon parked at the end of the road.
Congrats! The bulls are really starting to get vocal up there!

Great Write up and hunt! I figured you must have been close to the Lakes Trail when you let one fly at the bull and he crossed the Panhandle Creek and piled up. We were coming out Saturday from Venus Lake and Pleasant Pass and saw you and your 3 "packers" quartering up the bull, so we figured you had enough help.
We will be back soon in the Whittier unit!
-
Great Story!!! 45 min. after that climb? Awesome job!

Dandy Bull!

Nice. You should have stopped by. Believe the firefighters got a 5 pt the third or fourth day of the season. I took mine the evening of opening day and the guy I was hunting with took a small 4 pt. the second or the third day of the season. It was a awsome hunt. Wonder how many more Margaret bulls where taken.
-
I would have stopped by and BSed but it was already pretty late by the time we were headed home. Glad to hear you guys did well.
I'm also curious to see other bulls taken. The early rifle tag guys get to start tomorrow, one of them is a member here he's a cool guy and scouted pretty hard, I think he will get a nice one but he's hunting alone... Ouch.
-
Congratz! Stud bull  and glad you got into that ground..... neat country back in there

I have a friend of my brothers up there today also starting his rifle bull hunt. Could be the same guy?
-
Yeah maybe, this guys name is brad he is a firefighter. There was a group of guys up there last weekend in a white ford that were scouting for one of the guys who had the tag as well.

The White Ford is our group. I hope they both get nice bulls! weather should be perfect this week.
-
Saturday we talked to several guys. There was 2 fords at the end of the road. A white 4 door older ford and a newer standard cab blue(?) ford. Suspect they came up the trail behind us and passed us in the fog. Hard to say.
I drive the periwinkle 4-runner (hand me down from my wife :)). If any of you see me, say hello.
We talked to a few bowhunters on the 26 and sat and glassed with a guy who has the rifle rut tag for a bit. He talked of Hunt Wa but I never did ask his screen name. Said he was from Rochester I believe. Talked to a few guys camped down by Green river also. One said he was predator hunting and had a wimeraner (sp?) with him. The place was pretty buisy saturday.
I'm hoping for rain so they open the west side for the muzzy hunt just so guys will have somehwere else to go and we wont all be packed in the same area.
If I ran into any of you I apologize for not introducing myself and asking names. I'm awfull with names.

My brother got the word, they got a 6x6 Bull on Monday, photos to follow once they get out of the high country.

That's awesome! Cant wait to see it.

Care to say which area. Bet it was the one we were hunting if it is in high country. We were archery. No name lakes ring a bell.

I am sure we have you guys on camera. If it is same place.

Nicely done. Here's the reporting link for hoof rot.

Congrats and great story!!

Awesome.

These are all of the photos my brother and I have at this time. They do not do this bull justice!
From What I heard, our friend and his buddies had set up camp Saturday before the hunt was to begin Monday and did quite a bit of last minute scouting, since the archery hunt had just ended and we knew the area had received some pressure from at least one or two camps nearby. At first light Monday they hiked to the ridge overlooking a basin we have been watching all summer that held some good bulls. Opening morning the 6x6 bull and his cows were down in the bottom as expected. The group spent a couple hours glassing the bull, who wasn't moving. They were getting ready to plan a stalk on him, and at about the same time there was another hunter below (could have also been someone scouting), they did not know about that let off some bugles. The Bull didn't seem to care for that, so he rounded up his cows and moved up and out of the basin, and up to the saddle where our friend was able to put a clean shot at about 100 yards on the bull. They spent the next 2 days packing him out to the truck and breaking camp, etc.
Between his group and my brother and I, we figure we had 10+ scouting trips and many overnighters since May in the backcountry. We had most of the big bulls all located in different basins. The weather was clear and cold, and actually got fairly warm up there Monday. Hopefully things will be mild but cold when we are back to fill our Whittier tag!

Thats really cool. Pretty sure I've seen that guy with the twisted right side. If its the one I saw he looked a lot weaker in the bottoms through the spotter than he looks in your pics.
Where have I seen that pic with the other big 6 in the back before? Dejavu.... Those 2 Fords look familiar, LOL!!
-
Nice bulls guys.... CONGRATS!!! He is well earned and you did the tag justice!
Hell, according to a lot of "experts" on this forum, and it seems the WDFW, there just are not any big bulls in the Margaret...
Hmmmmmmmmmmm sure you guys were in the right area????
Of course maybe they all want to shoot from the road, or be able to load em in whole off a Weyco clearcut... who knows..
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Beautiful bull. That's awesome. Any after the shot pictures?
-
I even heard some "experts" that shot a smaller 4 point saying; "we scouted for months and there just really aren't any 6 points up there. 5 points is as big as they get, something about the genetics." Way to go on an awesome bull!

I've been scouting for months and hunting very neer there for a few years now spending time glassing Loowit/Margaret elk. I fully agree that place favors 5 points like you wouldnt believe. But even I've seen a 6x6 or two. They are just rare. Since that ones now dead they are a bit rarer yet.
In my opinion them boys worked hard and did that tag real justice. That is a representative jumbo for that unit as far as I've seen.
-
Congratulations!! I am hoping another big one picks up the harem. Me and my son will be spending time in November.

I would agree with that based on what I saw as well. We did see some 6 points, and one even larger, but the majority was certainly 5's. I just thought it was funny to make the claim of there only being 5 points after scouting as much as these guys claimed too.
-
There was definitely a lot of negativity about the Margaret tag. It's not an easy tag that's for sure but there are plenty of animals around to keep things interesting. I had an awesome hunt and a great time. Pretty cool to be able to hunt from the low land thick stuff up to the high country open stuff.
-
My friend took a bull out of the Margaret two days ago......it also had hoof rot.

Toss up a photo. We like to see them, and hate to see what now isnt left for our later tags. :'(

Nice bulls Bluesdude. Top end for sure. Glad to see someone put some of the better bulls on the ground. Still a piss poor unit for big bulls. Very far and few betweem. Cant wait for it to go to a general hunt.
-
Your crazy. There are some great bulls in that unit. Just have to spend some time scouting. Hey for a Westside hunt you can't ask for much more. Remember it just a bull hunt.
-

Back country camping permits would turn into a 2 + year wait during hunting season. Hope it never goes general :bdid:, even if I don't stand a chance of pulling another tag. :twocents: Unless WA goes to a quota system......... :peep:
-
Almost every bull we saw (and we saw a lot) were 5x5. But a lot of the big ones live on WEYCO land and it was all closed down.
-
Exactly. I definitely think there are a lot bigger bulls down low on weyco. I should have some good trail cam pictures of some once it opens back up. It makes no sense to me why it would go back to general.
-
What was the reason for it to go to permit only, Thats easy, there was no cover and the elk needed time to repopulate and disperse. Now that is done it needs to go back to a general season. No point for it to be a permit anymore.
-
Very nice bull and some beautiful pictures. Nice shot by the way!

So why not the toutle? Why not the nooksack? White river? Let's open them all up for general season. I don't really care I'm not going to draw this tag again for a long time and would like to hunt it general season along with everyone else but we only had what 5 choices in the bull category? The other four weren't even worth puttin in for to me. Sure this unit isn't gonna give you good odds at a 300+ bull like your nooksack tag or a white river tag but the lack of pressure and amount of elk make it appealing to me. If it were to become a general area it would be over run and probably ruined. Although I would be right there with everyone else.
-

I completely agree, I would even expand that to most west side area's to be general hunting. I always hunted the white river and for many, many years it has been a general hunt. Making the white a permit hunt only gave the mucks and the other multiple tribes a private hunting ground. They kill more bulls in that unit than non natives, so what is the point. If they were disciplined enough and they all combined took the same as us, then it would be worth it having stay permit only. But that will never happen! The white is too big and has plenty of cover for the elk to be affected by the general season like it has been for most of it's life. It's complete bull crap that the white is permit only, but that's just my opinion. I think the wdfw would like to see every unit a draw unit, they might give out a lot of tags but they would receive a ton of money from each application. I think that is what is in our future, but again just my opinion.
-
You have to understand something...
THIS UNIT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY AND WILDERNESS...
not land that the natives can go crazy on.. hell most of it is hike in only..... IT NEEDS TO STAY WILDERNESS. IT NEEDS TO STAY PERMIT ONLY.
The main reason for it going General Bull is AGNEW's MONEY buying his way through the WDFW... He is the one that bought the biggest chunk of the high lakes area... Rumor has it he wants to build a Hunting Lodge, and sell hunts on his land. HE CAN NOT DO THAT IF IT IS PERMIT ONLY!!!!!! Hell he can not hunt his own land there if it is permit only....
-

Toutle needs to be general also. I have said that before. Nooksack I dont think could withstand a general season , just not that many elk there . Whiteriver , sure Id go for that for general. More general areas that are open for hunting the less pressue is put on all units. Look at the winston with the number of elk there and also the pressure it gets. Those elk have no issues getting wiped out. If hunters diepersed over those 3 units it would be much better hunting all around.
-
So what units are going to replace these units for quality bull?????
SO if a quality bull draw permit is 13.00 and there IS NOTHING left for the wetside hunters on the southern part of the state to put in for.. HOW MUCH MONEY IS WDFW GOING TO LOSE???????
Then cry about lack of funds and need to raise prices again...
Region 5 is getting screwed in the ass over all this...
Because I know if and when the Margaret goes to a general tag, I will NEVER put in for a Quality bull tag in this state again... hell, I like hiking the backcountry.. I will just hunt the Margaret from now on as long as I am physically able....
-
I see your point but I still disagree, I'd like to see a few special permit areas still around and to me the margaret is an awesome hunt as far as opportunities go. I'd much rather them double the permits given than open it as a general season. I wish we had more limited quota hunts, like most other western states.

If he has any influance on the wdfw then it's probaly already a done deal, but I sure hope one guy can't have that much influence on making that kind of change. That would really suck in this case, I mostly care about the white but that's probably for a different post.

Actually I agree more with this than making it all general. That is actually how I like to see things done. Id love to see how somw of my general areas would do with quality with limited tags.
