Hey Guys,
Wanted to let know that a fellow Hunting Washington member won the Tenzing Hunt of a Lifetime to hunt Caribou in Alaska with Cameron Hanes!! I entered a drawing on Facebook a few months ago and won the grand prize! :o Amazing never thought anyone actually won these things. Its been a great year to begin with, got married to a wonderful woman on July 28th 2012, went on our honeymoon to Alaska on a cruise, while on the cruise we found out that I won the Trip and gear then to top it all off we just found out that my wife is pregnant! What a year and hunting season just started. :)

Sweet tent, I love the copper spur series for a free standing tent, quick up and down no staking needed and light weight, that will be real rummy with it being the 3

When are you going? I lived/hunted the island for six years.
-
Depending on where and what animal you are chasing will determine your terrain. I would go with gear that will withstand rain, snow and wind. If you are not prepared properly your trip can become a survival situation quickly. I love that place!!!!!
-
I dont have all the details yet but we are hunting caribou and deer. We will be there from October 27- November 5th.

The caribou are hit and miss on the island because there are not that many . I would definitely be prepared for wet and possibly cold weather. I have seen some good snow storms around the end of October. Good luck
-
I spent a summer on kodiak. One thing I will tell you is there are LOTS of bears. We actually were bluff charged by one. :yike: the terrain seemed pretty steep but I spent all of my time in larsen bay so my experience is limited.
-
Congrats man!! You should have a great hunt that's for sure! It was a blast when I went on the hunt with him in Quebec, and I am sure you'll anchor some animals in AK. I hope you're in shape, he'll literally run you in to the ground. Keep us all posted!
Here's a couple pics from my hunts success to get you amp'd up a lil more!

Thats awesome man. Congrats!
-
Awesome man!!! I need to call you soon and talk about your hunt and pick your brain a bit about cam. I have been working out and on a diet since i found out and have lost 25lbs. I will be trying my hardest to not embarrass myself on tv.

You don't live to far away from me. We could always meet at the ram in South hill or something and have a couple beers and talk about it too! Feel free to give me a call anytime.

Cool man sounds good!

Getting anxious yet???? Have fun! Make sure to take several flash drives to get copies of the raw video (if they'll let you) so you can have all the footage forever and not just the edited stuff for tv.

Yes sir! That is a good idea thanks!

Word is that Nick is still on Kodiak with Cams buddy Roy Roth trying to fill their deer tags. Weather kind of socked them in on Sunday and Cameron and his camera man made it out with Camerons tags filled and the plane packed with all sorts of meat! I'm sure Nick will post something sometime in the next day or so.

A few pictures from the day we headed out on the float plane. First time on a float plane for me, or a plane that small, it was a great experience and very loud when you took your headset off. We were up for about an hour and half or so till we reached our destination on the other end of the island.

Great time for it if you ask me. Would be a welcome change from all the bickering and whining that usually goes on this time of year :chuckle:

That's a lot of Hoyt gear for Bear Archery being a sponsor. You'd think someone is trying to suck up to Cameron :chuckle: Always thought it was strange you got a new Bear bow for a hunt with Cameron. Hoyts were probably too expensive! ;)
-
Congrats!
-
We landed in a small creek called Bear creek. We wanted to land further up creek but water levels were too low so we ended up a lot lower than Roy wanted. It took two plane trips to get all four of us and our gear in. The first was Cameron,Ty(camera man) and me with some gear and one of the two zodiac boats. The second trip Roy got picked up back in town and then made a stop on the way back to us to where one of his buddies was on a solo bow hunt for brown bear for the last month. They stopped near the lake he was camped by to grab a boat motor and and the other boat. They were not able to make contact with his buddy, he must have been out hunting. Hopefully he didn't need that boat anymore.

Crazy man. I remember you telling me about how you were going on this hunt. Time flies by too fast. But that's a memory for a lifetime

Sorry, just having a little fun ;)
you just can't help your self can you. Haters gonna hate. :chuckle:
-
Yes time does fly. As far the memories I will never forget and now all I want is to go back to Alaska. I wish our camera guy(Ty) didn't lose all the video and a lot of the pictures from this trip. He had some good videos of the hunting trip.
-
I brought the Bear and hunted with it for a couple days but was holding my Hoyt most of the trip!
-

Yeah, I saw you put the Bear up for sale right afterward. Looked like someone got one heck of a deal! Even if it was the 6" brace model.
That was probably too much speed for a Hoyt shooter to handle anyway :chuckle:
What's this about the videos and a lot of pictures getting lost? Were they damaged or lost in transit? That's horrible!
-
Cameron told me the his camera guy some how deleted all the video on accident and most of his pictures. I got a few but not many.
-
I've only met Cameron briefly a couple times. But I got the impression he is a perfectionist. I bet that didn't go over very well at all :yike: Still sucks, but I guess even cameramen are human.

Can't blame a guy for holding on and hunting with what he is comfortable with.
-
Looks like you had a great time, Kodiak Island is a beautiful place and has some great hunting and fishing. Thanks for the write up and the pics!
That looks like Bare Creek that flows into the Ayakulik River? The only Bear Creek I know of flows into the Buskin just 4.5 miles out of town or is there a different Bear Creek on Kodiak Island? Or maybe that's a name the pilots gave it?
-

What if a guy is more comfortable with a Blacks Creek, Badlands or Kifaru pack instead of a Tensing? Would it then be ok to use Badlands packs, camo and logo gear while filming "Tensing Hunt of a Lifetime"?
In that situation, hunting with Cameron, Bear Archery (who I only assume was a partial sponsor) must have known most of the guys would be shooting Hoyt. But this seems to have been an unusual situation. Unless they did not know Cameron was going to be the focus of the hunt, they had to know. Odd business decision for sure!
I'm glad the OP had a good time and I've been enjoying the pictures and story. Looking forward to reading more of the story and seeing more pictures

While we were waiting for Roy to get there we went for a short hike to check things out. Not 400YDS in to the hike and 400yds away we spot a big brown bear just laying on the the hillside watching us walk through the thick brush, that was an erie feeling. I think we saw a total of five different bears on that hike, most of them a long way off. We did see a few does and a couple young bucks. We headed back so we could get ready for Roys arrival and set up the one boat that we did have. It was quite a chore due to the fact our pump was broke and I was the only one that had set up a inflatable boat but we did get it done. Roy arrives and it's getting late. He wanted to get up the creek where he wants to set up camp and in a hurry. So we get both boats put together and loaded up with most of the gear for the 10 day trip, but there is not enough room for everyone. So they make the decision for Roy and Cam to head up in the two boats and leave Ty and I behind on the first trip. we did not know how far up the creek we wanted to camp so they went and left us behind thinking that they would be able to make it back down before dark to pick us up but that was not the case.

Not 100% on the name of the creek. That's what I remember them calling it. We were about 12.5 miles from Frazer lake.

Yep that sounds like Bare Creek that flows into the Ayakulik River. The first time I landed there was in the early 80's and the pilot was 18 years old and I was like 20. His dad flew out of Kodiak a month earlier and never returned so he and his mother were trying to run the flight service. He punctured the float while landing so we had to hurry and unload the plane as the float was taking on water. It was a 7 day trip that ended up being 12 days. lol
Beautiful part of the island, keep sending pictures and THANKS for your story.

Here is a video off Cameron's website. Its some footage of our hunt. Not much but pretty neat. sns=em
