Coon season is starting soon, and it will be my first time out. I was wondering if there is any experienced coon hunters out there that wouldnt mind taking a noob out. I have my own hound, I trained her a little bit with a road kill coon tail but I did all the (little bit) training on my own with no help, so I dont know how she would do. But she can be left behind for the first go around if anyone could help me out. Im in the Spanaway/Graham area.

Rooster, if you make it over to the east side your more then welcome to tag along on a coon hunt with me.
-
Id love to go on a hound hun5t if anyone ever has an opening. Ive done some coon hunting without the benefit of dogs but never behind a hound. JB

there is a ton of coons out by my folks place between orting and south praire but I'm sure if you hound start bawln treed in somones back yard they would get pissed it would be hilarious though
-
I used to live in easern wa, where were you then? haha....
Yeah, most people dont find the tune of a baying hound a sweet sound.
-
I keep my hounds away from houses. ALot of good dogs have been shot in peoples back yards. Not worth it to me ;)
-
Yeah, I heard some people do that.

some people just don't know what they are missing.
I treed three the other night in my Dodge ram. Scared teh hell out of the wife, but up the tree they went. Not sure which is louder, a baying hound or a screeching wife. LOL

I called in quite a few coons in Missouri growing up, haven't ever called one in up here though.

Machias down along hood canal. the ocean bay's. chahalis slough's. lot's of coon. there not worth much tho. light colored from the salt water i think. use to call at night. Rick

Fred,
I'm with you, in all my years of calling, here, I never had a raccoon show up, day or night calling.
If I could call them, it would make my nuisance wildlife control job a million times easier.
I think about you hound guys, every time I trap another 'coon... I've put down 47 of 'em this year. :dunno:

-
Wow, thats alot Krusty. Can you send me a pelt? :D
-
Nice Krusty! I have about 35 skunks so far and but only about 20 coons so far this year in nusiance calls. I have two beaver jobs lined up for this winter. I asked them if they wouldn't mind waiting till it gets colder, sure hate wasting a nice beaver pelt!!
-
Rooster,
I would rather cook and eat my favorite pair of boots, than skin a raccoon.
I dunno what it is about it, but the smell of raccoon fat makes me wanna puke! :dunno:
If you really want one, you can have it "in the round" (*whole). :P
Fred,
We don't have skunks (in my area), so every place one would be, a raccoon fills that void.
Almost all my calls are referrals from the WDFW, and within ten miles of home, for the most part.
I'm doing the same thing, trying to put off beaver jobs... I found an awesome new outlet for tanned beaver pelts, and did pretty well with the wall hangers last time around.
I plan on staying in Newport after deer season, until X-mas, fur trapping, and I'm hoping to spend January, over here, trapping beaver.
*While I was writing this, I got a call to trap some beaver here in West Seattle, and they can't wait, they've dropped four trees this week, almost killing the neighbor last night. :chuckle:

Krusty, I have a friend who has property up that way that would like some beaver removed. Would you like the job? I think it is a half hour away from Newport.
-
Fred,
Oh, heck yeah, I would! :IBCOOL:
Thanks for the offer. ;)

I'll get all the details and let you know. He wanted them done this summer, but I asked if he could wait till the pelts were prime. I will try and get some photos of the property, the dameage they are doing and I'll even try and stake out some channels so they are easier to find this winter.
