Title: Remington 721 .270 - Scope choice? - PICS!
Post by: Bantams on September 18, 2012, 06:29:54 PM
Hello All,

I just found out my grandfather is shipping his Remington 721 .270 Win to me!  I'm very happy, as I need an option for hunting besides my 12 ga with rifled slug barrel.

It does not have a scope, so I need to start shopping.
What should I be looking for?  I hunt on the westside and can't imagine I'll ever be shooting beyond 300 yards.  I can spend up to $200 or $300, and will consider a used scope from the HW classifieds.

Any help or opinions would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Kelsey

The brand I have been preferring for wetside has been Leupold.  Lots of different models and powers to choose from.  The rifleman series on through to the Vari-X models I believe would all be in the price range metioned.  I would say for a fixed power scope 4x might be a good look, and for variable 3-9 or even 4-12 won't be excessive.  For wetside, I don't recommend 'fine crosshair' reticles...tend to be difficult to pick up in the low light.

Kelsy, absolutely love this gun. My dad handed one down to me, between us it has killed probably 40+ deer and a dozen elk. Watch the safety as some needed a replacement/recalled safety. Great old rifle.

That Buckmaster offered up for free above would be perfect.  Don't worry about the rubber eyepiece.  Just get a set of Butler Creek flip up scope covers and you'll be good to go.  Very generous offer.  That's the kind of people that makes this a good place to spend time.
I have the same rifle.  Remington 721 in 270.  Very nice shooter.

Another good choice of scope for western WA is a Bushnell Elite series (http://www.opticsplanet.com/bushnell-3-9x40mm-elite-argon-purged-rainguard-hd-riflescope.html)  .  They have a coating that makes water shed right off the glass (I think they call it "Raingaurd".)  Makes it nice when hunting in the rain.  But that scope would only make sense if you didn't have such a great offer for the Nikon that JKEEN33 has offered you.

Are you kidding?!?!?   :yike:
I’m really kind of dumbfounded here – thank you so much!  And yes, of course I’ll take you up on your offer – from what I have read so far it sounds like the perfect scope!
I’ll send you a PM so we can get in touch for mailing the scope or picking it up.  I’m helping organize a competitive trail ride for this Saturday, but next week I might have a day to drive out to Enumclaw.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I like the Nikon Monarch's. A 3-9 x 40 would be plenty for a 270.

I have a Nikon buckmaster sitting here on my desk that I pulled off another rifle 3-9x40. Needs the rubber eyepiece that goes on the end. Works without it. I think you can get these from Nikon for a couple bucks. Yours if you want it. I was considering putting it up on the pay it forward. You pay shipping or pick up. Just let me know if you want it.

Good for you JKeen.

721 is a great rifle.  I have my grandpa's that he bought new in 1949.  If that thing could talk..

Well, it's obvious that she has a good starter scope! From here, I would say, shoot the scope that you have and then figure what you like and don't like about it. Do lots of shopping at big places that have lots of scopes and then set in pretty hard to find a good deal. Lots of places have sales after hunting season is over, when they are depleting their hunting stock. Congrats on the scope and the rifle! Good luck!!

I have a couple Monarchs, but recently needed to pick up a couple scopes for a two new .257 Roberts acquisitions.  Was going to get some more Monarchs until I looked at the Nikon ProStaff.  Currently a $30 rebate on Nikon BDC scopes.  Had a Cabelas' come on coupon I also used and it ended up costing me approximately $140 a scope...both 4x12x40 BDC's, after coupon and rebates.

Basically scoped both rifles for the price of one Monarch.  Pretty darn nice scopes for the money if you ask me.

My first deer rifle was a 721 in 30-06. Bought it on payments from my muskrat trap line in the early 80's. sold it.... but wish I hadn't. Great shooting rifle, PlainJane, but great shooting. Scope brand really doesn't matter in  my opinion.

Just put one of the Prostaff 4x12x40 scopes on a Remington 700 Classic in .257 Roberts.  Nice quality scopes considering price with rebate etc., for rifles that don't get used all that much.

Hi guys,

I should have updated this thread earlier - I met Jeff last week and picked up my new scope!
The rifle is in the mail currently from my grandfather.  It's going directly to the gunsmith so I can get it cut down and fitted with a new recoil pad, and the scope mounted.  I'll be sure to post pics once it's all set up - and with any luck, my success to follow!

Thank you for all your scope recommendations!
And thank you, Jeff, for your wonderful generosity.  What a great community we have here on HW.

Votex!  Vortex!  Vortex!!

Cant beat the warrenty,  Reasonable priced, and excellent glass.

Best deal on the market today hands down.  Go to Sportsmans, Wholesale Sprots, or Cabelas and 3 out of 5 salesman and specialists will agree.

Very nice, that should serve you well.

If you go with the Butler Creek flip-up scope caps, you won't need to worry about the missing rubber eye ring as it will be covered by the rear cap.

Nice gun... brings back many memories of the same gun. It was my grandpa's. Best shooting gun I have ever laid my hands on. I know he has been looking down the scope with me every time I have pulled the trigger. BOOM. Meat in the freezer every time. We call it the hammer of Thor. Drops everything in it's tracks. LOVE that gun :)

No deer yet, unfortunately, but I'm looking forward to late season.

Don't even think about that!!
My grandfather also sent along an old Mossberg .22 target rifle (144 heavy barrel) - never shot!  Can't wait to try that one out.  :IBCOOL:

Vortex diamondback and you'd have never have had to do a thing to it.  Their warranty covers everything except theft, even if you drive over it, it's covered.  Good luck when you've tried the rest give the best a shot.

Me neither, for the money I'll take them anyday.  Schmidt and Bender smokes em along with several others.  I have an S&B on a 257 ultra lt. Roy and love it.  My favorite scope is my Swarovski Z5 in
3.5x18 with turrets on a 300 rum.  But for the money I've had a diamondback on a 280 or 4yrs now and like it a lot, but sure isn't the best.

Looks like Grandpa took great care of that 721 from what we can see. You're going to love that rifle's flat trajectory and light trigger squeeze. Regarding what Iceman said, while carrying the rifle on a long hike, I check the safety every time I change shoulders. A couple of times while carrying it on the left shoulder somehow the safety was switched off on my 721. I tend not to keep a round in the chamber on long marches.
