So after many years of waiting for his tag my brother finally drew a Blues archery tag. We had a game plan from the start as I had guided a hunt for mtcook in there 2 years ago and saw many big bulls. The plan was confirmed when Jeff went in on a bonzai scout trip in late August and saw a herd of 17 bulls where we planned to hunt. We decided to wait until the 10th to start and hunt until the end of season if necessary so mtcook packed us in to a sweet camp. The three of us including my brother in law/ cameraman Emmett even rode horses into camp! The first pic is Emmett explaining to Dave that "no seriously I have only rode a horse once in my life!" Daves horses are awesome so even a rookie couldnt screw up the ride in.Jeff was ready to get to hunting and after flinging a few arrows at one of Daves rolled up foam pads it was game on. The journey continues tomorrow its bedtime! ;) nwhunter

Tagged.... Come on give us a little more to taste!
-
Awwww, come on!!!! Just a little more!!!
-
This will be a fun trip to follow, but Scott please be careful for there are some on here that might recognize a tree or rock. The boys did the tag justice as you will see in the end. They passed on the small ones so a tag could be taped to the mature. A pleasure helping these guys achieve a long wait (16) for Jeff

So back to the story, sorry for the delay. We get packed in and all set up to hunt. Funny story on the sleeping pad target that Dave mentioned. I happen to have a pretty good sized bedroll with a nice foam pad in it that every year Dave/ mtcook bellyaches about how huge it is for packing in but boy I sure do sleep good on it. So the fellas, Dave included take the foam pad out of my bedroll while I am in the crapper and leave it in the truck so when I get to camp I find out the joke. So I decide that shooting one of mtcook pads is fair trade for the joke and it actually is a great target, pull the arrows out and you will never know it was shot.
So on to the hunt. Day 1-4 are filled with good encounters and some callins. The elk had been pressured a bit before we got there so we were having to drop way down in the steep nasty stuff. Found some beautiful new spots though and saw some nice bulls. Heres a few more pics then more story after dinner.
-
Growing up next door to him, I still can't believe that Emmett is now a hunter! :chuckle:
Stud bull! Tell your brother "congrats", Scott!
-
Here is a fuzzy still I got on my little video camera of one that tempted Jeff early on the hunt. Dumb little satelite bull that messed us up on a big herd bull with a dandy bark he enjoyed to throw at us until the entire herd ran off.
-
More!
-
Every day we left camp in the dark, stayed out all day and hiked back to camp in the dark. Every day but the day we killed the bull we went from ridge top to creek bottom and back up which is 1500' elevation each way usually. My brother and I live at about 150' above sea level so even though we trained for the hunt we huffed and pufffed for a few days with the added elevation. Burning legs and lungs and feet were just everyday life and our costco size bottle of Advil got us through.
-
Bluebulls that wasnt very nice!! And jjhunter ya Emmett has come a long long ways from Colfax! He is a goat in the mountains and is getting good with the camera, now if only he would bowhunt. nwhunter
-
you sir are a sadist!!!
-
So on day four we were supposedly going to take it easy to heal up our hot feet from the day before. We ended up chasing bugles for several miles and found a beautiful herd bull that was a straight 6x6 well over 350. We sat on that bull all day hoping to make something happen when they got up that evening but it didnt work out. I called the satelite bull in and Jeff could have shot it at ten yards but passed. I then called him down to me for a little more video on my camera and got a couple still shots of him. The first pic is from 600 yards of that herd bull which could have been an awesome pic but I had wussed out and left my spotting scope at camp, trying to lighten my load. The second pic is the satelite bull. He was a 7x7 probly 320ish. I actually thought Jeff had shot this bull the way he whirled and took off and he kind of fell down on his way out. I was glassing for blood but luckily Jeff had the stones to hold off the release as it would pay off the next day.
-
Dam. He has way more self control then I do. I would have smoked that 7pt bull.
-
That 7 point looks like the one on Dave's cameras he's going to be extremely nice in a few more years!

-
Maybe he is searching the web for the best Idaho high fence bull pic he can find before he posts a story :o ?
-
Nice..Every inch counts in my book!

I apologize for dragging this out even though you asked for the long version this was some what cruel. I was out looking for elk tonight so that takes presidence over satisficating ya'll. Since I am sharing my brothers story I am not going to include every detail as I know he wants to do a magazine story so this is the condensed version of the kill day. And yes he is one of those shady lurkers who won't post but likes to snoop so let him have it after you congratulate him.
So day five rolls around and our camera man Emmett has to go home this day so plan was made to hunt out a ridge so he could drop down to the trail and head out to his pickup. He loaded all his jive in his pack and off we go. We actually run into the other two tagholders who were hunting up there on the trail in the dark and when they told us there plans for the day we changed ours and let them have the ridge we were going to hunt ahhhhhh KARMA! Shortly after passing our ridge we hear a bugle and when we finally get to where we can see we spot several satelite bulls and the bull he kills. We see its big but no time to really size it up just that its a shooter. Long story short we sneak through multiple satelite bulls and then I stay behind and call. I get the bull fired up with cow calls but he wont come so then start bugling and raking a tree with a stick. The bull starts to thrash a tree and seemed to want to kill it. With all the racket Jeff and Emmett are able to sneak in and after about 35 minutes the bull walks towards them presenting a shot and Jeff hammers him at 20 yards. This is all caught on video so maybe someday you can watch it! The bull goes 40 yards and lays down where he dies after a while. We were able to see him and it was quite a sight to see those big ol horns sticking up over an old log swaying back and forth before they went down for good. He is an 8x8 with split fourths that is heavy and long tined all the way up even good thirds. The points that make him an eight arent much but they are a couple inches so he is a legit 8x. Havent had him scored yet(I know I am irritated about it too talk to my brother) but rough score in camp done with a dollar bill has him pushing 380 on the conservative side so ya his bull and my bull from 07 will be real close in size.
At that point it was high fives and handshakes and best of all the elation of having a dead bull in the BLues a stones through from a trail. Unbelievable after all the holes we have been in over the years in that country.
So was it karma or luck or skill or fortune? I think a little of each combined with a ton of effort and patience to wait for the tag and wait for the bull of a lifetime. It takes a good tag and good hunting partners and in this case a good packer(thanks mtcook) and everything to go just right that one time to have a hunt like this come togethor and it did and we wont ever forget it. Hope you enjoyed the ride me fellow HuntWa buddies cause this is where I get off. Scott/nwhunter

That truly is the bull of a lifetime - mass, size, symmetry AND character. Congrats to all involved.
These teasing threads should be banned though. :) :) Patience is not my strong point.
-
Nicely done!
-
I heard a saying once that in the heat of the moment we seldom rise to the occasion, rather we fall to the level of our preparation....I know these guys and they put in the time and effort to deserve a bull like this (not to mention the scouting trips all the way from Forks to the Blues -can't get any futher away as a resident than that). Anyway, congrats again Jeff and Scott! Something like that is a team effort. When I'm in town this fall I will be calling you guys to watch the video. :) -Drew

Sounds like Jeff got the score finalled on his bull. Gross is 401 and net is 394 . Pretty cool to have a bull score that high and hardly any deducts. For a nontyp thats pretty rare. I believe that will put it at #3 in the state book for nontyp. archery. Bull of a lifetime for sure. nwhunter
