I'm looking to buy a Savage Hog Hunter in .338 win. Looking for any info from someone who owns either this model or any .338 win. I would be using this gun as a coyote exterminator/ deer gun. I understand .338 may be considered overkill for these but it is what I've got in mind. Also, I'm looking to start reloading since modern ammo is a lot more expensive than the old mil surplus for my mosin. Need a good starting point on a kit or a cheap way to assemble an effective kit for .338. Thanks for any help!
-
Wow, .338 for yote hunting?! You must really hate them to use that type of weapon on them!LOL. On a serious note, I'm not much help on this type of rifle but best of luck and I'm sure you're going to get some good info.
-
Reloader 19 and 225 Accubond or 210 gr. Partitions work very very well together...
As for the other things...like the press, dies and stuff, you can either buy it piece meal as you find them, and it might take a bit, or go buy an RCBS starter kit and the .338 WM dies, a couple of good manuals, and go for it.
-
for a coyote/deer load you dont really need an accubond or partition, sst's or plain old rem cor-lokt would be a lot cheaper bullet, and plenty for smaller critters..
-
I've got a. 338 winmag Mossberg 4x4 that I take for yotes. Been reloading the rounds for it for about 2 years now, I save so much money doing that. I shoot a 200 grain winchester ballistic silvertip, 66.3 grains of powder, its a tack driver.
-
I've got nearly $1000 in reloading equipment just to start. Dies, powders, primers etc.
-
Try the Nosler 180 Grain BT or AB. They can from time to time be found on their seconds web site for a great price. The 180's will be flat shooting, less recoil and hard hitting enough for what you want to do.
-
.338 win for coyotes , not sure but I think you might be slightly under gunned.
I'm really going to have to rethink using the 204 ruger this year on them
-
:chuckle: yeah that 204 won't blow them in half like the 338 will.
-
Dude, you better reload. Every time I pull the trigger I am sending 3 bucks down range. The cost sucks, but that round puts 'em down.
-
Would the LEE 50th anniv. Kit be a good start? $119 at local Cabelas. I'm looking at picking it up and practicing before I even get my rifle. Good brands of powder to start with?
-
I just have to ask............why not go with the .308 if you are set on the Savage Hog Hunter? Not that there's anything wrong with the .338, I'm just curious about your thinking on the cartridge selection (since you don't mention elk, but mention coyote and deer). :dunno:
-
Well if to need help reloading I can show you!

I think that the 338 is a great choice. It's one of the most versatile rounds out there. And it will be much less destructive on a deer or coyote than any of the 300 mags. :twocents:
If you want to just run one bullet for both deer and yotes I'd look at the 200 gr CT ballistic silver tip. They don't make the Nosler BT any more, but this is the same bullet. It's a great bullet and it's reasonably priced. The 200gr Speer HotCor is a great bullet as well and would work perfectly for deer and coyotes.
If you want to run the premium bullets, I like the 225 TTSX, partitions, and accubonds. I hit a deer a few years ago with the 225 partition out of a 338-06. Worked perfectly. Small entrance with little meat damage, massive internal damage, and a small exit. The deer just rolled over and never even twitched.
Reloading is absolutely the way to go. It will only cost a couple cents more to reload the 338 than it would a 30-06 with comparable components. Your setup doesn't need to be expensive or fancy. I'm still running the same Lee Anniversary kit which I bought 13 years and more than 14,000 rounds ago. The only parts of the kit which I've replaced are the scale (went to a Lyman after the Lee scale broke during a move) and I bought an RCBS case trimmer. You can be ready to load your first 100 rounds for less than $300.

I want .338 because I plan to visit my dad in GA and actually hunt feral hog. Gotta have a bigger gun than his 30-06 lol
-
For 99% of my hunting two .338 bullets work for me. The old 200 gr balletic tip and the 210 gr. Barnes boat tail. I worked on the loads so they shoot to the same point of impact out to 300 yrds. I use H-4831 SC.

Definitely bigger, but I wouldn't call it cheap. .338 Win reloads are going to be kicking at the heels of .308 or 30-06 factory core-lokts as far as price is concerned.
I was tossing cases after 3 or so reloads of my .300 Win Mag. Case life was pretty short in my experience.

I was running the 225 AB'S in mine and they really shot well.

I don't think that a 338 is that much more expensive when you look at similar quality components. The brass will be the most significant investment and that's about $35 per 50. I averaged 5 loads per case on my last 338 Win. I doubt that this rifle is going to be shot a whole lot anyways. Probably less than 100 times per year. So figure 50 pieces of brass will last two, maybe three years. Add bullets at 30-50 cents each, primers at about 4 cents each, and then about 25 cents for powder. I would say you can load up ammo for less than $.90 a shot. More or less depending on components. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

You will end up saving money reloading for the 338WM as opposed to buying factory ammo for it. Besides, you get to tailor the load for that particular weapon. Lee makes some good entry level gear for reloaders at a really good price. Just buy a few reloading manuals, Barnes, Nosler, Lyman 49th, whatever brand you plan on shooting... I would also suggest the book: The ABCs of Reloading... Good book, very informative and an easy read.
Good luck to you in this new adventure...be warned that many people find it becomes a new "hobby" ;)

I bought the Hornady Lock-N-Laod, look those up online. $300ish

Bought the Lee single stage press kit today. Looked up some info and made ten target rounds. Used 63gr of Hunter powder, CCI primers, Winchester brass, Hornaday 200gr SP. Won't even be able to test them till I buy a gun but it isn't too expensive to practice making a few at a time. I was in a hurry earlier so I couldnt look up what powder was suggested so I just grabbed that Hunter on advice of it being cheaper target powder. Is this batch going to be absolute dogs*t?
-
Kind of putting the cart before the horse there aint ya????
And what load data did you use? What COL did you load to? I have never used Ramshot Hunter for a .338, seems like it would be a bit fast burning.
CCI primers? Magnum Primers?
Seems you want to toss money down the toilet so to speak, go for it, but I wonder why post you were wanting help with reloading if you are not going to even bother looking up and writing down the powders, and bullets recommended by the guys who reload for this caliber religously??
Be very careful with new loads... especially since this is the first time you have done this... I have seen a couple of guys go to the hospital for shooting over or under pressured loads.
-
I use the ramshot hunter ball powder, with sci magnum primers and winchester nickel plated casings. I also use the lee aniversery reloading kit. Where did you get the 63 grains of powder recomondation from? Did you measure your neck size, overall length, bullet seat depth? I've got a. 338 and I triple check measurements, that's a big round to blow in my face.
-
Huntbear,
Yes cart before horse.
I used the load data that came in my Lee kit book. Said max was load was 70gr powder so I went 63, COL is supposed to be 3.280. The slight blunt tipped rounds I used measured at 3.255 consistently. I don't plan on using the Hunter except for the first loads, just wanted to practice with all the supplies. And yes I should have waited till this afternoon when I wasn't rushed so I could pull up this thread and get those recommendations for powder and all. The CCI primers are for magnum rifle cartridges. I understand the dangers of randomly experimenting with explosive components and that is why even though I have already made 10 rounds I came back to ask if they would be considered terrible and need to be discarded. I did flush some money today by not being patient but I wanted to get some hands on practice before I got the rifle. I know myself and would be even more impatient if I had a way to test rounds therefore I would like to understand how the reloading process works and then take the suggestions I have received and tailor my cartridges to the rifle I purchase. Hope none of this comes off as being an ass. Thanks for the help.
-
Data book said 70 was max so take 10% off to start with. Again these rounds made today will probably be disposed of but I had fun just getting a small amount of hands on. I'm going to wait until I can get doublenasty out here to help me before I try and make anymore.
-
I use the hunter ramshot 4350 ball powder and love it
Id recommend getting a good book if you haven't already.
Any questions just PM me, if you want help with the whole process shoot me a pm later this week.
-
I think you did alright. Ramshot has load data available on their website and they list the min charge as 65.9gr of Hunter for a 210 Partition and a max of 73.2gr. Seems to me like you just loaded some 338 Federal level loads. Those should be great for breaking in the gun and getting it sighted in.
Now go buy the gun so you can start shooting! :chuckle:

Expensive is relative in the end :P.
I don't know anyone that uses Ramshot powders, but I've seen them mentioned favorably in the gun rags. If it works stick with it. I believe they are fairly temp stable, if it's true that's a good thing though.
I prefer the Hodgdon's stick powders myself, and H-4895 is one of my favorites. Even with big cases it has always done me well. Once I've gotten near top end loads it's given me consistent velocities, just not top end velocities. Plus it is endorsed by Hodgdon for reduced loads as well if you want to go that route for practice.
I'm using it with 120 barnes bullets in the wifes 7mm-08, 175 interloks in my 7mm Mauser, 69 SMK's in 223 and 168 AMAX's in 308 Win as well. I used it with 165's in the 300 WM also.

Take delivery of the rifle on Monday. Have done a lot more research as far as reloading and made sure I know what measurements to go for. Thanks everyone for their input. Now if only I had a place to break it in....
-
I hope that was a joke. Range 15 every saturday and sunday. I'd come in through 507 though as it would be the shorter route and keep things legal.
Yorke, you're about to have a pm.
-
Range available on Mon/Tues?
-
Unfortunately just weekends. However if you don't mind the drive head out to the hills by eatonville on scott turner rd. Once you get onto the DP required land there's a couple spots people shoot into the hills that provide an excellent backdrop if it's legal to shoot there still. Idk about the fire bans and areas affected right now. :sry: :sry:
-
Alright I'll check into it. You wouldn't happen to be available one of those days would you, considering you are near JBLM.
-
Which days? This monday and tues I will be in yakima and the weekend after I will only be available if I limit out really early. Weekend after that I could be available. What do ya need?
-
Was just going to see if you;d be here this m/t to go shoot but you'll be on the east side
-
Yeah. I'll be miserable just about every second of it too. Sorry. I wouldn't mind seeing how that gun shoots.
-
I reload for my 338wm. I shoot barnes TTSX 225gr, with IMR 4350. If I can do mine, it shoots about 5/8" groups at 100yds. Great caliber/catridge!
-
200 GR Hornaday Interlock, 68GR Ramshot Hunter worked amazing on Wednesday. Zeroed to 200 yds and could do less than 1inch 5 round groups at 100 yes. BOOM! Ready to hunt!
