I just started reading this book by Boyd Iverson. My wife bought it for me while I was gone as a welcome home gift. I've only finished the first couple chapters. Man alive, this is a really good book. I think there is more information packed into each section than I am capable of remembering in the brush. I'm really impressed with Boyd's willingness to teach and mentor in this manner.
Do y'all know if he is a member of this board? I'd like to send him a message to say thanks.

Excellent read for sure. You'll retain more if you read it again later. I am not sure what he's doing these days. I think he's been doing more out of state hunts like Wyoming do to his old haunts being encroached upon...or maybe he wiped out the gene pool for those B & C blacktails. :IBCOOL:
-
He also has another book, Blacktail Tactics 2. I read them both every year. Each time you pick up something new to carry with you. :)
-
Funny, I used to work with Boyd's brother. He retired last year though.
-
I read at least #1 or #2 every year. I try to rotate them but over the years I've probably read the same one in consecutive years. Last I heard his honey hole where he did most of his research and hunting got logged but that was a while back so it may be pretty productive hunting once again. Wish I knew where that gene pool was.
-
In regards to the location of this gene pool. Just find any private land in kitsap county and you will find the big bucks. 99% of Boyds hunting is or has been on private property in Kitsap county, some of it he even had permission to be there. He does indeed have a lot of blacktail experience though.

Boyd Iverson did all his blacktail deer hunting in Oregon.
-
Great book and yes packed with good info!
-
My bad. I was thinking of another Boyd. Obviously I have not read the books and should. I love hunting blacktails.

:yeah:Around Eugene area. Same as Cameron Haynes.
-
I'm rereading the 2nd one at the moment myself. Hard to juggle that and study for work certification exams though. The Blacktail Tactics II is so much more interesting LOL.

That book helped me bag my biggest blacktail
-
Boyd did not hunt Kitsap, Perhaps he should have, Lol
-
Cool old buck , what year was that killed. I assume its an older kill?? Mid 70's ?? Killer buck!
-
It was shot about 8 or so years ago. Its Genes are still seen around the Long Lake area.
-
The Taxi was a bit on the cheap side. Lol
My friend who shot it wants to have it re-mounted and scored someday.
-
:yike: What a killer blacktail!!!
-
Its a long shot but if you ever go into the Long Lake store check out the pics on there wall. More recent bucks that for sure are his genes.
Problem is you either get permission or catch em in the areas that arnt private. Which isn't much now days.

I live in Kitsap county, but don't bow hunt... I drive all around here seeing some amazing spots and thinking there are deer in them for sure. I guess I need to learn how to bow hunt and then start knocking on doors.
-
That book really made me rethink a few things. The most interesting is how bucks bead, that is (literally) killer info.
-
It's a great book. I haven't read it in a while, but thanks to this thread I'm going to go grab it right now!
-
anyone read Scott Haugens book? Trophy Blacktail: The science of the hunt.
-
Yes. I love that book too.
-
Is there anywhere local to get these books or do I have to order them online?
-
Their are usually in any hunting store that sells any books. Sportco I believe has it. I picked up my copy on jblm. I only say this because the place I bought them at sells a little gear, mostly licenses and trips, and had all of 10 or so books total. This was one they usually have in stock.
-
I may have to take a drive down south then. I have Cabelas and Wholesale Sports near where I live, but I'm not sure if either of those places would have it. I guess I'll do some calling around tomorrow.
-
Blacktail trophy tactics 2!!! Love that book. I lent it to a friend and never saw it again. Gonna havta pic up a new copy. By the way...some of the trophy blacktail pictures in that book are unreal!!!
-
My wife ordered Trophy tactics 1 and 2 as well as "big bucks the benoit way" from amazon.
-
I got my copy of Blacktail Trophy Tactics from Boyd himself when it first came out at the Sportsman's Show in the old King Dome. I had a pass that let me in a couple of hours before they opened to the general public and got to spend quite a while talking to him about his tactics. Really neat and informative guy! His book has helped me immensely with my blacktail and whitetail hunting. Awesome book!

Is there a lot in the first book that isn't covered in the second? I have the second edition, but not the first...

I got both but the first was best only because I read it first. The second has the same info and even a bit more. I don't know if the "extra" is really pertainant though. The first book really covers it WELL! I found myself skipping ahead in the second trying to find that "more".

Tactics 2 arrived today. O0
