we leave at 5:00 am, roll into our spot as its hitting light and we get out and start walking in.
first bear hunt
first 5 minutes of the hunt
Walked 50 yards in, and there my target was, around 250 lbs, up on a clear cut hillside i could see his black fluffy face. I make sure I'm not experiencing bear fever and glass him, then with binoc's, yep his fat little ass is waddling down the hill, and yes hes a bear, GREAT because that's a steep hill, and a 150 yards with a little fog, OK hes behind some tall brush for a minute so while he cant see me I can just hop in the 5' deep drainage ditch and stalk in closer, sounds great, right? I'll get closer & I can wait for him to present and BLAMMO!!
He never came out, after 30 minutes of me and my buddy sitting perched dead silent waiting, we enter the area from each side hoping to flush him out. Nope never saw him again he must have slipped out quiet. The moral, I shoulda took the shot, I just assumed why shoot 150 when I can get in to 50 :bash: after it was all over a birdie whistle alerted us by a recurve bow hunter hiding and watching it all, if your on here, thank you for standing down and allowing us to work before we lost him, good guy  we chatted, shook hands and decided who would go which way as to stay outta each others way 8)
Sure would of been cool to drop him 5 minutes & 50 feet into my very first hunt. Spent the next few hours tripping over scat and hair clumps, its a good area for sure, maybe tonight or tomorrow
-
shoulda coulda woulda thats huntin!!!! :dunno:
-
shoulda coulda woulda thats huntin!!!! :dunno:
:yeah:
-
well damn, those fuzzy *censored*s can be sneaky
-
They sure are cool to see. I never get tired of it, every sighting is as exciting as the first.
-
At least you saw one. :) This year will be my third hunting season and I have yet to see any deer/elk/bear other than out of season, or in areas that it would be illegal to shoot them. One family of deer I swear was mocking me...I was on my way home from hunting last day of my first hunting season and passed half a dozen deer lounging in some guy's front lawn.
-
I am not sure I have Kracker figured out yet but he tells a good story ;)
-
hey with all the posts saying "WHERE THE HELL IS THE STORY" i figure why write it if its boring :chuckle: besides i am beating my head still, i will not be done til later :bash:
-
Where abouts are hunting? I live in Enumclaw. Looking for a good place to hunt bears if your willing to tell your secret spot...
-
Enumclaw? :o well damn son hit 410 and go east for 15 minutes to Greenwater area, you got plenty of bear there, ALOT of bear. Just drive up the FS roads and sit and wait for daylight and spot the clear cuts, that's how i found this spot among 2-3 others in the last week. Just watch for cats there, GW has an insane population of them I hear :yike:
-
O Nooo...the whole site will be there come daylight :bdid: :dunno: Me included :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
nah everyone knows its there, seems nobody goes there though, i think maybe due to the kitty's :dunno:
-
Alot of bear hunters get all excited about bear when it 1st starts in August and by the time September rolls around some have tagged out or just quit going when in all reality September is one of the best months to kill a bear ....Up high and in the blueberry meadows ....Now you have a bear fit to eat :twocents:
-
Bears are sneaky. I dont know how they do it but they sure have the ability to vanish.
-
ya tell me about it, he was 75 yards from us, on a hillside, with a little brush wall, poof gone, never heard a thing or saw him. Im sitting here thinking a 30 minute nap and trip back may be in order,
Yogi needs to come home :cue:
-
O Nooo...the whole site will be there come daylight :bdid: :dunno: Me included :chuckle: :chuckle:
daylight? id be headed there right now, im thinking about going back tonight :chuckle:
-
My brother and I were archery hunting brown bears in Alaska and had a 9 footer across the creek from us (~25 yards) but we couldn't get a shot. He turned and MELTED into the brush without much of a sound. It was amazing that such a large animal could just disappear into nothing, I mean he walked maybe 6-7 steps and just vanished. :yike: :yike: We made it back to the ATV's in record time after that
-
UPDATE:
went back after my last post we hauled butt back, I couldn't take it!
we creep in, me and the boy this time, 5 steps and glass, 5 steps and glass, 5 steps and glass.... to the right 2 NICE black-tail  but I'm packing my 300 wm so its a no go :bash:, We scout some and head back to the trail head as its been an hour and its 10 minutes from PITCH BLACKNESS and even worse, we KNOW any minute they will be coming out to eat.
We glass a second and sure enough, there's yogi... NO, its yogis grand pappy and hes ONE BIG SUMBICH!! :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST THE ONES HUGE BEAR   :yike: :yike:
I sat glassing his waddling butt, my son is having a bad case of the shakes now, and within 5 minutes i can barely see him at 200 yards as its almost pitch dark, *censored* WRONG TIME!! He is in and out of 5' tall blackberries, and any minute we wont be able to see our shoes, *censored* *censored* *censored* !!!! :bash: :bash: &*^$^@#*&%&$&*^%(%(*&^*(^ :bash: :bash: :bash:
"son we gotta go, NOW, or were gonna be part of the food chain"...
Pappy is 400+. My hunting buddy is 6'7 / 390 lbs, and on his hands and knees he is way smaller then this bear. So knowing we would be in pitch black, and have to wait for him to kick the bucket, and THENNNNNNNNN find him, and worse pack him out, we opted to AGAIN not take the shot and wait til 5am and look for Pappy. I'm sick, hes was damn huge, and I'm going to go have a stiff drink, right now, and cry, cry some more then maybe ill be ok.
Man I hope we see him at 5am :mgun: :mgun: :mgun: :mgun:
-
Glad to see that you found a hunting spot  Now finish all the madness
-
Dude are you afraid of the dark ? drop his ass then worry about it . Thats part of the rush .
-
" drop his as and then maybe youll find him or maybe it was a lost irresponsible shot in the dark with a wasted bear"
no it was me and my 14 yr old, its was pitch black, no flash light, no nothing, sorry but i happen to cherish mine and my kids life *censored*, nice ego stroke do you feel better now?
-
You walked in that far, with not much time till sunset, and you didn't bring a headlamp or flashlight? :o :bdid:
-
we got there with an hour of light and we were 300 yards from the trail head, IE THE TRUCK< if you read the story we were headed OUT when we saw him.
-
the dark doesnt bother me even if thers bears and cats but you did the right thing rather than spook him or wound him and a 14 year old son and scare the crap out of your kid he will still want to hunt with you  i beloive you did the right thing i dont care what other think now your son has a good expirience and not a bad one good for you
-
if you read the story we were headed OUT when we saw him.
Yes, I read that, but STILL! I keep a mini mag flashlight and a headlamp in my pack at all times, even when I don't expect to be out till dark.
I hate having to walk out in the dark with no light. Once I had to go a little over a mile, with only the display light on my GPS to light the way. It was even worse because I had my daughter with me, who was 4 years old at the time.
-
cannon thanks, my whole goal with every step is to teach my son to do it right not be careless, or take chances, or wound animals for loss, im doing more teaching then hunting
bobcat- sorry brother but that was very careless with a 4 yr old..tisk tisk... to each his own but it was a bad idea, always plan ahead, otherwise be prepared, this was meant to be a short and fun scout/hunt AND I KEPT IT THAT WAY.. I followed the plan, and we were out and gone at dark. Yes i could of dropped that bear, but I followed my plan, another day no big deal.

Careless? Maybe, I did have a flashlight, but the batteries died. No big deal. Was familiar with the area, been in and out of there many times. Just was harder packing the 4 year old and not being able to see where I was stepping.
If I had been hunting and not just checking a trail camera, I surely would have been more prepared and had extra batteries in the pack.
-
just be careful, you can hunt another day, but that kid aint replaceable
-
at one point this morning we ran up to Denny Creek to take a peek and scout, nothing but trash, empty shotgun shells and more trash... sickening! anyways its a bit smokey there too.
-
Dude chill out I was just razzing you . of course if you had a bad shot dont take it . If you had a solid shot right at dark I don't see any issue with taking it . hike back out seemed pretty close get a buddy and some lights then go recover the animal . more often than not when you pass up a chance on a throphy class animal you don't get another chance to take him.
-
razzing is great, but maybe do it in an obvious way so others (newbs, kids, youth readers) dont take it as "advice"
-
no harm no foul brother .Hope you kill him . plus the comment are you afraid of the dark was kinda light (so i thaught ) It's all good .
-
They sure are cool to see. I never get tired of it, every sighting is as exciting as the first.
:yeah:
-
Sounds like you're getting close, I'm rooting for you.
-
I always figure, discretion is the better part of valor.
I never go into the field with out a head lamp, and I always make sure my head lamp works before I go afield.
As an old Eagle Scout...I always like to 'Be Prepared'.
-
Been 4 hours, no show by anything but does
:dunno:
-
Alright Kc, you know everyone following this post will settle for NOTHING LESS than “yogi’s grand pappy”. :IBCOOL:
We’re all rooting for ya and watching for your update!

Oh ya I hunt all around the Greenwater area. Ive been up there for miles and miles hrs and hrs. Hunting sawmil Ridge and 7012 along the 485 boundry. Just cant seem to get any. Just wondering if you were any other public areas. Understandable no one wants to give there secret spots...Mine use to be behind my house till hancock took it from me. Damn it.
-
Oh man if you shoot a 100 pounder you are in for IT!
Good luck out there and I hope you bag a monster.
-
No sign of anything, except some rain and deer :dunno: i had a shrew playing on my boot for a minute, can u tell im bored posted upwaiting...
-
A few hr nap, and back i go....
-
Did you bring adequate light this time to stay out late?
-
yes i am bringing you because your a big burly woodsy guy with tons of light and you like chasing bear in the dark, now were almost late hurry up and meet me at the trail head  im actually headed to buy a good mag light on the way :yeah:
-
lol. Good luck to you. Go get em.
-
You've already seen two bears way bigger than I've ever seen in the woods. Good luck and pull the trigger this time!
-
Was the schrew Boone and Crocket?

My old man drug me around all over the place in the dark with lots of bears around. Thats what the guns for if need be. Its only irresponsible if you dont know what your doing. Things happen, its all part of hunting. Personally most of the guys I know who kill critters regularly including my self end up messing with them well after dark. Sure is nice to shoot them in the morning though and not have to worry about it. The decision to shoot will always be yours so no judgment passed one way or another from me on that subject, thats a personal call.
-
Nothing showed, sorry guys . Met another bow hunter and directed him to teo deer..
-
when you kill on at night its much cooler and lest bugs !
-
this is one of the funniest threads I ever followed on here :chuckle: :chuckle: and if that rock slide is your bear spot then your lookin sweet ...
-
Nope just a place we scouted ;), my hunting ground is 30 miles away
-
ahhh, welcome to the world of trail-cams, I now know when hes coming out, and heading in.. Its during the night or when Im at work, so how do i disrupt his schedule? I would like to take bruiser w/o taking another day off work
-
Let's see the picture. Is it the 250 or 400lber?
-
sorry i dont have the kinda money for the remote access some guys do, i gotta drag it home off the mountain, plug it in, and look at my crappy pics, then haul it back, off the $50 walmart unit, you know the ones with FLASH for light :bash: o well, it did its job, you'll see pics Saturday, when i "hopefully" bag his fat wallowing butt :dunno:
-

If you have a Nikon Coolpix type camera, take the card out and look at it on your camera. That's what I do. Ya don't need a card reader. :twocents: or a computer to look at your pictures.
-
Oh, by your post it sounded like you have already got pictures of him and got him patterned. Good luck look forward to seeing some pics.
-
i think so, at about 2am and 2pm :bash: explains why i keep missing him :bash:

I wouldn't take the camera home to look at pictures. Just take an extra memory card, and swap cards. Leave the camera where it is.
-
300 yards from the truck and you still didn't take a poke! A 400 lber at that!? Some people do tell a good story :chuckle:
-
Sorry to disenthuse you but I dont try to shoot 400 yards in the dark
-
" I sat glassing his waddling butt, my son is having a bad case of the shakes now, and within 5 minutes i can barely see him at 200 yards "
thought it was 200, either way you do have some incredible stories for a first year hunter. I wish I had the luck or... misfortune in your case my first year hunting.
-
300 yards from the tr ;)uck and you still didn't take a poke! A 400 lber at that!? Some people do tell a good story :chuckle:
I was just repeating u sorry thought u said 400, either way if u wanna hunt illegally go ahead, I dont.
-
I wouldn't suggest that to anyone. EVER. Nor would I do that my self. Poaching makes me sick to my stomach. Sorry too offend you and i probably shouldn't have commented. It's just that I haven't quite figured you out yet as one Steelers loving (but still awesome in my book)member said. Some of your stories are simply amazing. Keep on with it man and you'll be successful. Always better to make a safe bet than a questionable one.
-
sorry i have just gotten annoyed with all the "i shoot mine in the dark go find em and kill em in the dark" comments. 1, its not safe, 2, its not LEGAL, so guess what i will be pushed into its dumb
steelers? who said i like the steelers? :o
-
Never said to shoot em in the dark. Also never said you like the Steelers ;)
-
Pretty Great thread KC, looking forward to seeing one of the two on the ground. Keep up the good work!
-
oh i just got that you meant steelers loving MEMBER, oops :chuckle: ya theres still hope for that guy though. sadly my wife is steelers lover too, :dunno:

Me and my buddie went up past Greenwater in August. Off forest road 70-30. We found the answer to a million dollar question. Bears do not *censored* in the woods. :bash:
-
they do but they use bunnies to wipe so you gotta look for bunnies with a skid mark
