Title: #$@$^@%Y^&&#$@%#$@#$$^%$^&@^ stupid case separation...
Post by: Huntbear on September 28, 2012, 06:31:04 PM
OK, so am working up a new load in my .257 Ackley Improved.  I want to use 110 gr. Accubonds, and had some reliable load data given me using RL 19.  I backed off 2 whole grains off near max to start, so 47 grains.  I ALWAYS load 5 rounds when working up rounds, just a habit I fell into years ago.

So we find a spot to shoot today, thank you to to the DNR LEO we saw, he was a lot of good help and information.

I shot 3 of the first 5 rounds.. again, this is 2 grains under near max.   They were shooting great, velocity is a little low, but that is ok, group is looking like I am used to.. nickel to dime size.  I shoot the 4th round, and it shoots about 1/4 in higher than the rest.  However, when I extract and eject, I only get the case body... NO NECK.. it is stuck in the chamber..  :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:  I stop by the local gunsmith and he and his tool can not get it out.   :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

I know and have seen that Ackley rounds sometimes do this, but this is my first experience with it....  NOW WHAT!  :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:  without the proper extraction tools, I am wondering how to proceed.

What you can try is a slightly oversize brass brush just push it in fron the chamber end enough to shove it in the case neck.  pull back on the brush and the whole thing should come out.  If it is pretty tight you might have to use a rod from the muzzle to assist pushing the brush while pulling from the other end.  You don't want to pull the thread end off the brush.

AWS's process usually does the trick.  If that doesn't work, you may have to try pouring some chamber casting material in, as if you are casting the chamber, with something like Cerrosafe and hope that when you drive the casting out, the case neck comes with it.
Sounds like your case necks are too thick, and need to be turned down to make a bit of room for expansion when the round is fired.

That was the process I was going to try....

It is just this one case... the others fired fine.  I know these were fire formed as new shells and this is the first loading since.  I will do some measuring though, to double check.

oh it would of been fine my gun shot all her test loads like a little champ...... and the wizzum once the scope was squared away you couldn't make a bad group with...dang I like that little camo gun  :chuckle: :chuckle: but when the shell ejected no neck gotta admit it was a bit odd.... so 2 of the three rifles we took had a great day  :)

Yes,  your little 7-08 and the AR 243 wssm shot great.  Nice tiny little groups right where we aimed them...

I've had it happen and after a bunch of head scratching and a failed attempt with the same brush method mentioned above. I took a fired case to the Hardware store. I then went to their large selection of bolts and found one slightly larger than the inside neck diameter of the case and long enough to fit all the way through the rear of the action with the bolt removed and be able to reach the stuck case neck. I then took a belt sander to the threaded end and put a slight  taper on it. I removed the bolt from my rifle inserted the modified bolt from the hardware store through the action and slightly into the case neck.

I then gave it a slight tap then turned it a little until I felt the threads had caught the inside of the stuck case neck. I then took a crescent wrench and turned it down so that it was the same diameter as the bolt, I then slid it over the bolt and snugged it up against the bolt head and gave the crescent a tap with a large screw driver handle and out popped the case neck.

This was done with a .300 Win Mag and also a .375 H&H.

The only thing I'll add to everyone else's suggestions would be to soak it in Kroil or some other penetrating oil for a night before trying to extract it. I've used this trick a few times for people who don't like to clean their brass or chamber. ;)

Andrew

Will give it a try..

Not sure why this one brass did this, because the gun/chamber was clean, and the brass was clean as well.

I know they make some stuck case remover that is supposed to be good stuff. Might look for it john. Probably just kroil with a different label :chuckle:

Good luck on the stuck case............And happy to hear the WSSM is working out for ya

I still have not made it to the post office to mail the extra mag, I just picked up the bunk house cabinets today from Ziggy's and will be busy this week getting those installed and counter tops done.

Looking pretty damn good for a bunkhouse... lol

I have two mags,, so am ok till you can make it to the post office..

and yea, I put a Weaver cv10 2-10 on it, got it all cinched down, then realized I had no way to bore site it.  So, on a wing and a prayer, shot low and center of paper.. was shooting 6 in. left, but dead on for height... got it adjusted over, and it is hitting right where you aim..

Now am looking for decent one in .223.  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

John,

Next time, bore sight it like any bolt gun.

Later today, I'll post a photo or two of how I support the AR when I'm bore sighting.
